I did a similar thing to your Sea Harrier with the Airfix 1/48th Tornado GR4 from the Dambusters 60th set, it was horrible, raised panel lines, poor fit, the lot. I looked at it as a challenge and am proud of how it came out in the end. (I did fit a revell canopy and resin cockpit and 617 Sqn 70th decals) Lots of swearing involved but worth it in the end. Great work, keep it coming.

I had to watch this video several times, had no time to participate in the chat. I have no ''building season"' but yes often I don't feel the urge to build something of my stash (None of them are easy one or two day builds, like I did in the 1970s). And then suddenly I'm in a building frenzy, working on 3 kits at the same time. What I do try to do more - see your (in)famous stash size video - is to prioritize on finally finishing kits I started working on a long time ago. Sometimes I have no time, sometimes I prefer another of my hobbies. I don't have much fancy equipment. I tried airbrushing twice but spraying is not my thing although for some of the surfaces of the bigger kits, spray cans are useful. I acquired some paintbrushing techniques over the years I'm happy with. Most of the disasters - well yes, only I know what parts are missing or might have ended up on the wrong place or not. I will never win a model competition. If I had no other hobby, or if I had double the time and the money, then yes I might try. But i'm building for myself. Those contests do inspire me though. What do I hope to finish by the end of this year? My Revell 1/32 Me 262; two US Navy Ww2 fighters in different scales; a Heller 1/16 StuG III. For next year, i'm thinking about my 1/350 Dreadnought, 1/32 ground attack Ilyushin, and several civilian cars. Try not to expand my stash and leave the kits i haven't started on their shelves.

Intriguing topic: sometimes my need to build flawless masterpiece can get in the way of getting started. After all, that is not the spirit of how most got into model building. Who remembers the time when we were twelve years old and the impatient excitement of finishing a kit within two days? Occasionally, it is refreshing to re-live childhood by pursuing a kit with that same approach of not over-thinking it. Thus, the momentum isn't lost. And yet, with our advanced skills, the model still looks reasonaby good, once finished - even if it won't be the next candidate for the world championship.

Hi Peter. Loved this one mate. Very pertinent to all of us at one time or another. Given up on the notification from You tube but its not a biggy, I just keep checking your channel. Lots of changes in life recently one thing and 20 others have kept my building momentum to a dribble...but I keep going whenever I get the time. Got back into the hobby...again ( the kit collecting has never ceased though and the stash is `healthy`) I felt like a challenge and something grand so decided the 1/48 rev/mon b29 would be an interesting place to start getting back into kits again. As a result of the sheer amount of clean up of parts it is going VERY tediously...BUT. the battle with ejector pin marks and flash etc WILL come to an end...one day and I will pick up the airbrush ( and scratch my head )...been a while. You touched on MANY areas I have shared similar experience and it was great to listen to you share and ask for your viewers also . I think most of us are all in the same boat. I bought the Fengda airbrush and it goes well. Not as nice as my runway 13 but does the job. appreciate the recommendation and would also recommend it as a budget but capable tool. Personally I build my kits up as my own `air force` with my own schemes and markings etc so I never suffer from feeling I haven't done an example justice. I just enjoy the imagination and flexibility this gives for example the Superfort build will sport an unusual `copper` bare metal finish as part of an alt universe/ Alt materials and alloys. Thanks again. Best chat Ive listened to in a while on any modelling channel. Keep it fun. Cheers.

Different strokes for different folk Peter. We all do things our own way. Fast or slow, it doesn’t matter. I like build videos because I can learn from others, and it’s interesting to see how they sort out problematic areas on some kits, especially those on my build list. Sometimes they unearth an issue I didn’t see, even after I go through the instruction sheet and look at the parts on the sprues. I believe that forewarned is forearmed. And as for competitions, not for me as well. I prefer the camaraderie of group builds to the rivalry of competitions. 😊

Wow that's an impressive selection of kits Peter, those will definitely keep your mojo on the highest level! As for the next modeling season: many kits are waiting in my stash to build, but what I really looking forward to work on: finishing my 1/24 Airfix Hellcat wich I started in early 2021, Tamiya 1/32 Corsair, P-38 Lightning, and the Border Models Fw190. Other than these, some quick projects could also find themselves on the bench as well. I'm so agree with you about competing with each other. For the same reason I think I'll stop bringing my kits to modeling contests. Focusing to win prices on various model shows just kind of takes away the essence of modeling, wich is just have fun and enjoy our bench time! I also only ever entered (and won) one model competition... around the age of 14.... Run by a local toy/model shop. It was restricted to Airfix series 1, but you could add detailing if you wanted - I built a Bf.109, posed in flight on it's stand, pointed downwards - Cotton-wool smoke and flames coming from the engine - bullet-holes, smashed canopy... and my bloodthirsty 14-yo self thought it would be fun to splash spots of red paint inside the cockpit/canopy... 2nd prize winner was a Sherman tank, obviously inspired by Matchbox dioramas because it was on a stand with grass, tree, and a bit of wall - I personally thought it was brilliantly done, and IMHO, better than mine. First prize was £5 to spend in that shop - But bear in mind in those days (1976/77) you could get a 1/72nd Lancaster for not much more than £1

I spent a year on the GWH Su-30 SM in 1/48 while the kit turned out to be my best work ever, I did find great enjoyment in building it. There were no issues with fit or instuctions. The issue was that is was very modular with loads of sub assemblies. The weapons and engine area took a month each! I wanted to dive straight back in to the 1/32 Tamiya Corsair but I just was not ready to start such a big project. Beware of building the F-14 in flight with acrylic rods. I built mine like that but the kit is quite heavy and after about a year, the rod snapped and the F-14 went on it's final flight.

Some great talking points once again Peter. You mentioned early in the video that your dad worked in HMS Invincible pre-commissioning - I too worked on the Invincible command and control systems (including the Seadart) at this time and it would be interesting to know what he worked on? I can find time throughout the year for my hobbies as I'm retired and my partner still works. Competition modelling is of no interest to me, nor indeed is joining a modelling club. I do however love watching build videos on KZbin to marvel at the skill and pick up the odd tip (especially for WW1 aircraft modelling). My current project is the CSM 1/32 Nieuport XXIII, and next will be one of my WNW kits, probably an Albatros D.V. The stash is quite small (10 kits), so I need to think about adding to that!

Recently started an Airfix Mary Rose starter kit. Have always built planes so a ship was very new and a challenge despite being a starter. Really enjoyed it. So much so bought a HMS Victory to do next. My wife then points to my stash of 20 plus models asking when I'll be building them? 😂

Hi Peter! I know what you mean. I got discouraged with the cockpit sub-assembly for the Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire Mk I -- especially after I misplaced the crucial piece that connects the control panel and pedal mechanism. I set it aside and built a really simple old Testors kit from 1965, and had a lot of fun with it. I've got a number of 1/72 and 1/76 kits in stash and more coming -- including a few Revell re-boxings of Matchbox diorama kits -- and I'm going to focus on them 'till I get my skills up to speed again. I did find that piece, and I'm back on the Spit again after the break. When it's done, I've got a Tamiya 1/48 'Tilly' kit and an ICM RAF ground crew kit to build, and I plan a diorama for them with the Spit. Other kits upcoming are the Tamiya 1/700 Prince of Wales Battle of Malaya kit, and a Trumpeter 1/72 Chinook my wife gave me for my birthday. Oooo, and I've also got the Revell 1/144 Apollo 11 Saturn V 50th anniversary kit coming, and I'll get that done by Christmas, I hope. In between, I need to build a display shelf... As always, thanks for all the fun, support and encouragement to puny mortals like me... 😀

Thanks Steve 👍🏻 ☺️ But...Ohhhh! Revell Apollo Saturn V (1/144) is sitting next to my model cabinet (see my Xmas dusting pain vids) it's ok but just styrene plasticard forming the cylindrical main sections! What a rip off! 😡

@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab LoL! I should have guessed with Ravell... The only reason I got it was because it was 42% off -- now I guess I know why! Live and learn. I'll make sure I leave an appropriate review on Amazon... Thanks for the info! 😀

@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab Hi Peter! The Saturn V arrived today, and the main body section is regular plastic like the rest of the kit, so I guess they changed it with my version. I'll let you know how the build goes. 😀

Terrible model slump this year after taking far too long on a 1/16 Stug. Without sounding like a plug, I’ve found in the past that a Tamiya armour kit is a great and genuine weekend build, something like the Chieftain.

I've built a couple ZM 1/32s the last two years and a 1/32 Kittyhawk Mirage 2000N 🙄 and a couple less involved kits, which got me ready to just bite the bullet and build a long planned project.(so many warts and all, some unexpected). Trumpeter 1/32 F-105D. It needed all the aftermarket I could get and then some....but we're putting on paint and should be done in about a month or so. As long as the MOJO hangs on.😂 Once done, something smaller less involved should do the trick to keep me from going static.

I do some judging occasionally in a non related area and I have to tick a box that says I have no vested interest in the project being judged. Sometime I do when maybe it’s a friend or a sister company and I always tick the box saying I cannot judge this due to vested interest. Maybe the judges should move to an online voting form where the know there vote is recorded against a particular project.

Currently have two on the bench with one just about done. Airfix 1/48 Hawker Hunter in Suez strips is just about done with a 1/72 Masterbox Mk.1 Female underway and will be putting into a 1919 diorama. As far as what's next? Will probably be one of Airfix's simple 1/72 aircraft (probably the early Hurricane), and then a Special Hobby 1/32 P-400 in Soviet lend-lease colors.

12:59 Wait, some people don't clean their airbrush between paints? How can you get consistent colours if you're effectively mixing every time you spray? I've only been modelling 12 months or so and after getting a cheapo airbrush I've automatically been pretty religious with cleaning. Seems weird to me anyone would be that lax given the potential consequences
