I so agree Malikah they are stealing ! The deposit does not belong to the landlord. The more I learn about Merida it would only be a travel/ vacation destination not a place to consider as a permanent residence. So so appreciate your candidate videos !

Thanks for watching! I really don’t understand that mindset here. It pisses me off actually.

Good warning video, I have been told by many yucatecos that once you've handed over money you aren't getting it back - as you mentioned, likely they don't have it any longer. Often a threatening legal letter alleging fraud and demanding the deposit be returned or proof of deficiencies with costs and receipts be submitted or legal action will be forthcoming… this will loosen the purse strings once they realize that it will incur additional costs to withhold the deposit fraudulently - it's called "walking them to the courthouse steps"

Good tip! I personally have photos of each and every flaw in this home and will take video of the professional cleaning in every area as my proof .

They are definitely taking advantage because they have gotten away with it so far. Good you are bringing attention to it.

Yea, these jokers will find a way to keep them deposits. If I have to break a lease early, I have no sympathy due to this type of practice. It's krazy. My previous landlord charged me for EVERYTHING. But I left that electric bill for her to pay (calling me and asking me to pay it ... I was like hell nawww. You kept both my deposits. You pay it). Krazy

I just spoke with my landlord the other day and we talked about it. She made sure she has no intention of keeping it and she is not a thief! 😒

My last comment. One of the reasons "gringos" get gouged is definitely a by product of folks on youtube shouting over and over how CHEAP MEXICO IS!!! We keep announcing how we pay our maids double and double tipping etc because it's so cheap. We needed to keep our mouths. Prices all over the world are doubling and tripling for us because we keep announcing how much more we can pay than what is being charged.
@malikahonthemove3 ай бұрын
That may be part of the reason but I think it is more the fact that America is a capitalist country and the perception is that we have money , even when some don’t .

Great video. I think it would be beneficial to have a fb Group that applauds good landlords as well as bad landlords with address attached to warn others. How else would anyone know who and what to avoid? IMO good idea Malikah!

You guys in Merida are hit harder b/ they require 2 deposits from you. In most other places in Mexico, only one is required. So we lose just one!😅 I’m glad you called it by its name: theft - as it should be called!
@malikahonthemove4 ай бұрын
Wow! I wonder what makes Merida so special that 2 are required?

Hi Malikha! Thanks for this topic, We are newcomers to Merida, and we are actually finalizing our paperwork Today for our one year lease! Yikes! You brought some great points to light; I’m crossing my fingers our landlord will do the right thing with our deposit. It’s quite an investment being in Merida as rents have gone up. Thanks, I look forward to your next video🥰

Thanks for watching and I hope you have better luck than most. Many will even reassure you in the beginning that there won’t be that problem then flip the script at the end.

Oh, yes. I know all the rental disappoints well. Yes....bright smile when you pay and move in..........scowls and uncomfortable change in personality on the way out. One thing that shocked me was after I moved into a place and painted and fixed up the garden with plants and planters furniture etc. The landlord came in and rasied the rent because it was now "worth more"!!!! What the hell!! Yes, Malika....we who live there for awhile call it the "gringo tax".

Thanks 🩷 I wish we could report them and hold them accountable! However, this is the same issue in Thailand as well. My Thai friend told me it happened to her and she was born and raised there. Shitty people all over the world !

Unfortunately it isn’t just Mexico! It also isn’t just done to foreigners. People do shady to their own people too. Heck here in the US my son was charged $75 out of his deposit because he left an unused and un assembled brand new packing box behind in his apartment. Money makes people ugly sometimes.

It is known the deposit is never coming back, only on very rare circumstances. It is the renter ( or cleaning lady)that should be using ácido muriático to keep hard water stains down and pouring it in the drains occasionally. The landlords know they can get away with anything, it will never see the light of day in a court. It should not be called a returned deposit, but a gift to the landlord 😂 it is frustrating though, the fee to the real estate agent, the "deposit"
@malikahonthemove4 ай бұрын
Do they do their fellow Mexicans the same way or is it just foreigners? If they do; do Mexicans just accept this horrible practice?
@ridethroughmexico34944 ай бұрын
@malikahonthemove9878 yes, most have an aval, so there is no large deposit. I think in Merida it is worse. Amd how can you fight when the ones that can change the laws are the owners of the rentals 🤷🏻♀️
@sherryblack28834 ай бұрын
Wow that's crazy Malikha did you have this issue when you left Thailand getting your deposit back? Lol you probably will be getting out of Mexico eventually one day huh

I had to break my lease in Thailand and leave early due to a serious family emergency . I honestly don’t know how long I will be here. My initial goal , and still is not to be stationary for long in any one place but to move to many places while my body and mind still allow me 😂
