Acting was good. The opening act depicting her relationship with her mother was the most effective part of the movie. De Armis’ accent coming through the entire time was grating. I totally agree with your review of this movie. After reading almost every book written about Marilyn, I was looking forward to watching it. Marilyn's brilliance, sense of humour, passions were ignored and replaced with abuse and unnecessary use of graphic depictions. Marilyn was more than a one-dimensional view of abuse. The director appeared to focus on a sexualized take on victimhood as opposed to Marilyn's determination, fire and grit. Ana de Armas was brilliant and is a gifted actress. It's unfortunate the director didn't capitalize on Marilyn's or Ana's amazing qualities.

To play devils advocate I think that was the point. I like to think of it as a documentary of sorts. Showing how all of the bad things that happens to Monroe all kept stacking on her consciousness. Then how those around her didn’t help her situation and continued t objectify her. But I’m a worse way, a mental objectification of her personality and demeanor as well. So in short this movies intention wasn’t a biography of her entire life, but about what happens to her. I think some of the more sexual scenes were too much, but it’s a movie so they are going to do “edgy” shit. Just my opinion; but I can see where your coming from with your criticism.

No balance in this film. It was Exactly bullying her in her grave. Even if her life was so so horrible or even worse than this treacherous movie. They didn't show any of her power, which she had to have to navigate Hollywood...for the short time she was in this world. They didn't show how she overcame her childhood. How she had the guts to leave a man that abused her in that time. They made it seem like he left her. And this calling everybody Daddy.. just huh.. No balance whatsoever, they took away all of her power and literally stripped her naked through the whole movie, this is disgusting. Like she just was naked all the time. And the the president scene... was just Rapist-porn. This director even disrepects her mother with the nudity at the end of their mother daughter scene. I believe she was abused, but it was unnecessary for her mother to be trying to drown her while only having panties on and then after Norma escaped and ran away, it was completely unnecessary for her mother to for no reason be without her underwear, when just a few seconds ago her mother had on panties....wtf. It was just disgusting for no reason. This guy, this director just human trafficked them all over the screen. You just raped her life on screen, he should be locked up. She could have had a horrible life. okay. But she just wasn't walking around naked constantly. This director was just creepy with her unborn children on the screen...to do that fetus scene twice was just overkill. This was disgusting and unnecessary oh my goodness it just ruined my day yesterday watching it. But I wanted to watch it to the end to see if it would get better, and it didn't it just got worse and worse and worse. We see her push through the hard times to shoot her movies and so on, but we never see why. I watched the movie yesterday. I was never really interested in Marilyn Monroe so I didn’t know anything about her life or her as a person going into this movie. I only decided to watch it because I read how bad and disturbing it is, and I am always intrigued by that. So I stated this movie and didn’t really know what to expect, because I thought this was based on her life, not on a fictional book loosely based on her. And from the beginning I was just like “omg this poor girl” and was completely confused not only by the weird way of telling the story in blocks that were hard to connect for someone without any knowledge of her career, but also because nobody was having normal conversations. Were people talking like that back then? Did nobody ever treat her as an adult? And like I said I thought it was biographical, so I was initially shocked that this is how Marilyn Monroe was. And then the whole thing with JFK made me…even more confused. I mean he raped her in the movie, and I thought for a moment this was a fact. Of course I researched after the movie and found out that this was fiction. Like the movie did touch me for a second becaI thought it was telling a true story. But knowing that it is not a true story but using the name of a real person who did suffer enough in her life and who was so much more than just the used little girl like she’s portrayed here makes me sick to the stomach. Why do this? Why take a real person, whose life in it of itself would have given enough material to fill 5+ hours probably, and then put these fictional parts in there? What purpose does that serve? If this was all the truth, if this was a 1-1 biography I’d understand, then all the disturbing parts would’ve been necessary to tell the story. If this was pure fiction I’d kinda understand, a tale about a poor soul, that was used and abused by almost anyone in her life only for her to end up dead too early to show the cruelty of idk life or Hollywood or whatever. But this combination of fact and fiction is just…bad. Furthermore, what the hell is with the black and white and color? I didn’t understand the purpose of that at all.

Where was the resolve in Marilyn's life though? The glamour and being revered as a sex symbol around the world for decades to come..the truth is her life was tragic and she was used, abused and discarded. To the masses, she is precious & important..to the Elites, she was a product to be used. It's the sad painful truth. Think about this, we're in the 21st Century, many decades since she passed away, and yet in the 2010s, the Elites decided to make the Harvey Weinstein's vile deeds public. In a time when most couldn't even fathom that going on in Hollywood. Do you think he is the only one or that it's over? That's what this film and honoring what she went through should lead to: Exposing the vile truth about the industry.

It's all in how you view it. To me, the movie explores not only the factual "truth" of Marilyn's/Norma Jeane's life, but the emotional truth through "fictionalized" scenes. Picasso said: "Art is the lie that tells a truth". By the way, even the most "truthful", fact-based bios are not 100% accurate. People may know the facts, but not the emotional/psychological aspects behind them, which is what the book/movie attempts to do. Some people are offended by the brutality of the abuse. But rape should repulse. Abuse should repulse. Sanitizing it to make it watchable is exploitative. Many times we hear "so and so was abused," but we gloss over it. We don't know the horror of it. This film tells you that abuse is brutal. Is it hard to watch? Of course. I also don't agree that it exploits MM/NJ. Her life was very hard and sad. It doesn't show her in a bad light. Let us not blame the victim again. It shows her abusers in a bad light. It shows the misogyny of the times she lived in and the industry in which she worked. This woman was deeply wounded emotionally and psychologically (more than 10 foster homes!). In some instances, she was as mentally vulnerable as a child. And no one could see beyond the glamorous sex symbol to help her. This is a horror film. By the way... how should all the horrible things she went through be portrayed? Do you realize that if you leave the film horrified, repulsed, and disgusted with the sexualization of MM, the film totally succeeded?

Agreed with your comment here. The “baby” talking was certainly…..a reach! However, the overall psychological effect they were going for, pushed through. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would have with those few fetus scenes I was like wtf? I don’t get that perspective really. The abuse scene, termination scene, and kidnap/termination scene was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Other than Ana being pointlessly topless in majority of scenes, I saw no problems with the film. It was artistically orchestrated. No bad light on anyone, even the abusers; she and the film allowed them to disappear from her life. It was a neat take. Ana was phenomenal as Marilyn. Her screams made me cry. It’s hard to remind yourself “it’s just a movie” when the screams you hear are still real. Talk about electrifying.

I just finished the film. It was yet another failed attempt. Once every ten or so years Hollywood attempts to make a movie about Marilyn Monroe. Understandably so. Marilyn Monroe is an iconic figure, with so many people who love her and are fiercely protective of her. Love her because she is the embodiment of innocence, with a tragic life and a tragic end. Fiercely protective because fans want to guard her from any further mistreatment. This film... was mistreatment. That's all I'm going to say about this film. My advice for the future filmmaker who wants to try their hand at making a Marilyn Monroe movie: just don't. No matter what, you'll never find the perfect lookalike, who can perfectly portray Norma Jean, and Norma as Marilyn. She's far too iconic, and at this point fans just want her left alone to RIP. So just don't even bother.

It's ashame that they had to choose the Oats book as a basis for anything to do with Marilyn. Marilyn did say when asked about being happy, "if I'm generally anything, I'm generally miserable". This movie didn't upset me. I knew it wasn't accurate. For me it was more of a horror film about ghosts of a woman's past haunting her adult life, which was true for her. When she transforms in the makeup chair it was like she was possessed, haunting. It was a well done movie about how Hollywood treated women and men in general back in the day. The actress portraying Marylin was spot on. She loved acting and wanted to be a great actress, she improved with every film. Her demise came with her involvement with the Kennedy Brothers. One is said to have had her killed. The nudity I think is to make you feel how she was exposed against her will. I actually would recomend people to see it, men and women, if I was a mother I would Watch this with my teenage daughter so she could see how she must never allowed any man or woman to treat her and with my teenage son, so he could see how he must not treat a woman. What are you talking about There are a few (short) sex scenes in the film, It’s comments like these that make it clear why a Marilyn Monroe film will never receive unanimous praise: she’s a ubiquitous icon and everyone feels like they know her and have some weird relationship with her when they don’t know her. I’m not an expert but even the layperson knows that Sex, trauma and abuse (of all kinds) were all a big part of her life at one time or another. Did they, in this film, show some things that were not capital t true ? Yea but Not attempting to cover these things in some form would have been just as disingenuous in telling her story (or in this case a story that runs parallel to hers as my understanding was that this was based on fiction). Speaking of, take it up with the author of the novelist, who was the real person to use Marilyn’s story (and who says so in the prologue of the novel) as a metaphor for, among other things, the tragedies that can come of that kind of celebrity

This film was about the experiences that Norma Jean had as Marilyn Monroe, which is why the film is disjointed and dissociative. The same people who are crying EXPLOITATION are doing the same thing the public did when she was alive, which is focus solely on her sexuality. It was a brilliant decision on the filmmakers to include the sex scenes for this reason. Think of how shocking it must have been for the people watching Marilyn at the time and then ask yourself if your reaction is any different. Norma Jean was a woman with complex issues and a deep longing to be seen and loved for who she really was, which was NOT Marilyn Monroe. You're completely missing the point of the film. A part of exploitation is people finding entertainment in the rumors surrounding famous people. A hateful person is not unlike a ravenous fan, after all. It’s a terrible film. Real Marilyn, although tortured, was also resilient, strong and smart. She got herself a fair deal with 20th century fox by opening up MM productions, she wanted to learn acting and went to actors studio. She was also a beautiful human being and not just a sobbing, abused mess. I hate it. Sorry

I'm here just after seeing the movie. I thought it was good but quite disturbing no less, and a very dark portrayal of the actress' life. We all know Marilyn had a troubling life, especially at the end, but this movie made me wonder how many elements are exposed I didn't know about, and how many were made up. For example, her mother attempting to drown her and her being raped. Also, I expected to see things like her singing to President Kennedy but instead we get to see her fellate him in his bed with Secret Service just outside with the door open. Pretty sick, you have to admit and it does shed a very dark light on an amazing icon. However, Ana de Armas does an incredible job in the role and definitely deserved the Oscar nomination.

Me halfway through this movie: Why are they making her out to be a crazy dumb baby?? She's not a crazy dumb baby! It's so well acted and beautifully shot, but they did a horrific job at writing Norma/Marilyn. And they filled in the blanks in her life with some CRAZY stuff. Totally disrespectful. They really didn't do right by her memory. She was clearly an intelligent woman, and you don't get any of that here. They make her out to be a stereotypical dumb blonde and that's so disrespectful and sad. And wow, this director and slow motion shots need to get a room, it's insane. He LOVES slow motion, way too much. I feel like without slow motion this would be an hour and half tops. And please don't get me started on the talking fetus 😭 let's just pretend that never happened.
@7788jazzy2 жыл бұрын
I disagree. This is supposed to be an artistic lens into Marilyn’s internal life. Part of their movie, especially the parts with Arthur miller, showed she was intelligent. But the movie studios didn’t take her seriously and only wanted her to play dumb blonde parts. You could see how upsetting that was for her. The point of the movie was for the audience to live inside Marylyn. Marilyn was emotionally and mentally tormented and a very sad person. She was very abused since childhood and then later by men and the Hollywood system. She was a very lonely soul who sought respect and love. The director wants you to experience Marilyn’s life through her point of view. I’ve read tons of books on Marilyn. I’ve watched documentaries. I’ve listened to interviews of Marilyn and other people who knew her. I watched her movies. I think the movie captured the essence of her emotional life and suffering. She was a tortured soul. She did call Joe Dimmagio daddy in real life. She walked around nude at home and slept nude. In an interview, Marilyn tells a reporter she’s usually very sad. This movie is a brave attempt to make the audience understand and empathize with Marilyn’s traumatic life. Marilyn loved children and was tormented by the procedures she undertook and miscarriages. They haunted her. People think Marilyn was so lucky In so many ways. I would not want to live a life imprisoned my a tormented mind like Marilyn. The movie is a journey into her torment.

I didn't know much about Marilyn Monroe before seeing 'Blonde'. I knew the basics about her marriages and the drugs and some of the movies. But this was my first foray into an in-depth film about her. It definitely reveals the dark side of fame and celebrity. It reminded me of a David Lynch film at times with psychological horror. The acting was amazing though. It is amazing how he recreates the appearance of various periods in her life. It's like old photos coming to life in a movie, or he recreates scenes from her movies in an incredible way. I can see why people would dislike this film though. I think the movie degrades Marilyn Monroe pretty badly. In real life I suppose. she was degraded, but the film degrades her even more. I found the movie odd in how it critiques her exploitation while exploiting her. I figured you have to compare the movie with reality and not take it all at face value.

I'm late 50's - I know images and a couple of movies and Elton John's Candle in the Wind. Her performance is oscar-worthy - I felt like I was seeing MM in many of the scenes. It's a dark movie. Theater is often dark and some really push boundaries and/or cross the line (Quentin anyone?). This movie isn't for everyone. It won't sit well in our uber-sensitive culture that demands "save spaces". Watching again and recommending to most friends - with a heads up.

I'm still watching it and gosh her calling her marital partners daddy all the time instead of exploring the difficulties within those marriages with her career and marriage gosh it's quite Idk disappointing for me as a person who looks up too her as an actor. I feel as those this movie had something which was the actress yet the writing lifting Marilyn's life sadlt not so much. I read that the writer of the book based off this film described it as a feminist interpretation from a male director which I disagree for there are so many misogynistic scenes and there is hardly any scenes about how she left the studio due to the fact she had enough of being paid less as a woman!! THAT IS REAL FEMINISM that should of been shown in this film not mainly basing the film on her tragic past, her daddy issue and her sex life which the media had loved to paint where there is so much more about her like leaving the studio she was contracted towards her own production company. Honestly the film was a disappointment but Ana de Armas really worked hard for this role which shows as well as the cinematography and set design honestly is beautiful yet the writing and directing so disappointing.

What this film tries to do is show the life of a star in a different way, it is not perfect, it may be hard at times or many people do not like it, but it shows that the American dream does not always have to be perfect and uncovers what the industry abused and exploited her, it is incredible to think that the Kennedy brothers continue to be treated as heroes when they abused her so much, sometimes people just want to see happy endings and not see reality, but Ana de Armas' performance was spectacular and I think that after whatever it cost her to get here, she deserves all the respect and recognition.
