The MLS feels as if it’s afraid of being what it is. It’s America’s soccer league. Not a soccer league in America. They need to understand that and go back to having fun with their teams and images again.

(Houston 1836) Dynamo has rebranded once already and had 3 logos. Playing in black in Houston is beyond stupid! Quit rebranding and getting a worth while team on the field. I dont care if all the players are white, black, hispanic, blue or purple.

@@Hero-and-Hooligan Agreed. The dumb gimmicky branding almost killed the league. I don't like the PseudoEuro branding of the new teams and they definitely need to refresh the branding strategy a bit, but some of those names (Mutiny, Burn, Clash) need to stay dead. The logos and colors screamed 1990s gaming edgelords, no one took the league seriously back then.

Americans trying to Americanize the world sport is a pretty shit take considering how the sports that are big in this country don’t have a huge footing in other countries. not to mention the reason teams are named Los Angeles galaxy or Chicago fire or Columbus crew is so like in most American sports if the owner decides to move the team they don’t have to completely rebrand and just change the city name like Brooklyn Dodgers la Dodgers and so forth. using words like football club or city or United is showing a commitment not to a brand but a community it seeks to create. I think that’s why some of these teams are rebranding. they need to become ingrained in the culture of their respective communities and you can’t do that with half your brand out the door. That being said not all these brands and teams are bad timbers might be one of the best examples of old mls branding working it would be hard to move that franchise to Texas and call it the San Antonio timbers right?

As a European I prefer American teams with ‘American’ names such as Galaxy, Fire, Impact etc. - it’s what separates USA from the rest of the world. The logic that adopting ‘European’ names such as FC, United, and City will give MLS sides more appeal internationally is absolute nonsense. People in Europe are not going to watch MLS when they can watch the Champions League, Premier League, La Liga etc. - also because of the time difference, MLS games are never going to be on at times when Europe is going to watch, you’re 7+ hours behind us, it’s just not feasible.The trend has worked for some teams like Atlanta United and LAFC but now it’s just getting silly.

Looks to me that you don't actually watch football, most European team have a weird name because they were made by sailors hundreds of years ago, just because the Premier League is full of united City towns fc, that says nothing about the sport. The MLS should also get more artistic with the names and come up with something that truly represent the people from the area in which those teams play

@RedStarSanJose
@RedStarSanJose 3 жыл бұрын
In 2000, San Jose was correctly re-named the Earthquakes. We were the first MLS club to embrace our NASL roots. The managing group at the time did what everyone in Silicon Valley wanted to happen in 1996, bring back the Quakes. They FAILED with that logo and they straight insulted us with the color change to blue. I applied for a job on their web team in 2000, and at the interview I asked why they didn't go with our traditional red, white, and black, and I was told that they surveyed 'people' who explained that when given a choice they would rather wear articles of clothing that was blue instead of red. (!!!) Our latest crest looks like clip art because of the ball, IMHO. I was told by someone inside the Quakes front office that when the Quakes submitted logo ideas for that rebrand, there was a shaking globe instead of a ball, which would have been MILES better than what we ended up with. Apparently the league told the Quakes to put the football in the logo because "all of your other logos always had a ball in it." If that's true I think those east coast league officials should let the clubs design their own crests. Maybe if they did we wouldn't have so many cookie-cutter logos here?

MLS is trying too hard to be a major league. Imagine if Spurs changed their logo and name to Tottenham FC. American names set this league apart from other leagues. @@zizoushifty1483 You're not wrong that they're not comparable and that their circumstances are different. But if you step back and take another look, that's exactly why the MLS clubs shouldn't be trying so hard to recreate the same styles of identities that European teams have. There's no point trying to appear like a club that was made in 1882, it'll always look either generic or inauthentic and it's going with the worst thing available in the circumstance. If you're a young club in an entirely different culture, then use that freedom to design with modern and local tastes in mind to start with.

As a Dynamo fan, I am not a fan of the new logo. The old logo was boring, but it at least had some history, even if it wasn't much. I would have been fine with a new logo, as long as they tried to keep some element of the old badge. Instead of the lightning bolt, they could have kept the old star with the lines shooting out. They could have kept the font instead of this new boring one. They could have kept some blue trim, like they did on the Dash. I also really hate adding FC to the name. I think MLS needs to abandon trying to name our clubs like their in Europe. North America has a unique naming system. Let's use that. The use of the [City] [Nickname] format could be something unique to the US that makes sure anyone who hears about our clubs knows it's from the US. I just think soccer should be like other American sports in that sense. You don't see basketball teams in Europe being named the Rhein Panthers or something. They use their naming convention. We should use ours.

It does seems like MLS has an identity crisis in terms of trying to chase the trend of going with the Euro-Style club names for the sake of appealing to the futbol supporters (european fans and for better or worse, Eurosnobs. the same ones who look down MLS for the wrong reasons.) and it feel like they're afraid taking risks on the branding. As far as the Charlotte FC one, It looks nice and I can understand the meanings within it in terms that the city has a mint coin making history and the Queen City connection with the crown; and the St. Louis SC one looks fresh in terms of the shape of the badge, the colors, how it structures with the word mark and also the context of using the SC as a acronym for Soccer Capital considering that St. Louis has a very deep and rich history of soccer for over a Century! Also, as far as the Dynamo rebranding, it was a mixed bag in my book in terms of the badge looks okay, but how they explained and handled the rebranding was ridiculous. The Montreal one, That's the one that pisses me off as much how it's supporters are; The logo doesn't look bad but don't look great either, but the way how the Front Office's way on how they approached the rebranding for the sake of "Just Because" is absolutely inexcusable. The Chicago Fire are learning from their latest crest fiasco and it shows that the front office cannot be apathetic towards it's die-hard supporter base, otherwise they'll pay a steep price. Fan input should be implemented when it comes to the club identity and I hope they use the colors of the Chicago city flag. That being said, MLS Club owners need to take the supporters groups' input to consideration whenever these situations occur rather than being so apathetic and expect them to accept it for the sake of it.

Thanks for covering Charlotte FC. We’re super excited for the team, and the organization seems super ambitious so far. I was initially underwhelmed by the name too but, contrary to your guess, it actually WAS the clear fan preference. They conducted fan surveys and polls at the launch party, through the SGs, and through broader emails, and Charlotte FC was the most popular choice quite easily. Maybe the Twitter crowd reflected differently, but in Instagram comments for example, it was overwhelming for Charlotte FC. Hard to go against what the casuals and masses want. The hardcore MLS fans are gonna be there regardless so you gotta go with mass appeal to build a fanbase from scratch. I’ve accepted it. And the crest I liked from the beginning. Everybody here wanted a crown/Royal theme and to play up the Queen City connection. Maybe it’s been done before but it’s what we Charlotteans wanted. @@jthomashair I honestly don't think that would be lame, but I get everyone has different tastes. The main advantage is it taps into an existing fanbase, and not only that but some franchises have a long history. Say for example a new team is formed in Milwaukee, and they call the team the Green Bay Packers. That means they are part of a very long history in the area. bad example, cuz fuck the Packers, but do you see what I'm saying? It doesn't have to be an NFL team either, it could be a baseball or basketball franchise, but NFL works best because it's also a field sport. Also if the team is playing in a stadium which has 'Atlanta falcons' written everywhere, with the Falcons logo etc, it just feels a bit strange that they're Atlanta United. I'm a European football fan. And I think the MLS trying to copy things in Europe is just a big no no. The MLS is it's own thing and they should do their own thing. Sticking FC on your team names is just stupid and it's look like the MLS is trying to pander to a European fans or gain some kind of credibility with them. I've been watching the MLS for the last two years and I like the differences between it and say the EPL.

I'm a fan of the Revolution, and I think the name is fine. But the club crest has been a goddam disaster right from the get-go. It sucked then and it sucks now. For unknown reasons, other than the Kraft's well documented tone deafness when it comes to marketing and public relations, they refuse to entertain any attempts to adopt something unique and attractive. Oh, those who like it maintain that it's unique. Well, each turd is also unique. But in the end it remains a turd. There's a good reason why no other club has anything like it. And it's not a flattering reason. JMO!

Just as an outsider I kinda like CF Montreal, I think their new badge looks cool, and Club de Foot is I suppose an homage to Québec as the French area. I have no issues with stuff like Fire or Earthquake but I do find Dynamo and Real hilarious. Dynamo is a sports society in the former Eastern bloc and a lot of Dynamo teams like Moscow and Berlin are related to the secret police, KGB and STASI respectively, while Real is given by the Spanish throne. Seems weird for NA teams.

I...dont mind most of the more generic names. The thing is early MLS veered so hard into the American sports scene of the 90s and it led to the league being memed to death, now I feel they're overcorrecting in the other direction. Even if you want to use Eurostyle names...theres more than just FC, SC, City, and United.

The Charlotte thing really disappointed me. I'm 100% with you, not every MLS team should be city, united or just FC, it's boring as hell. With Charlotte they have the same ownership as the Panthers, they have the same stadium, with 'Panthers' written all over it. Why not just go with Carolina Panthers MLS? It would be cool as fuck, and not only that there is a huge fanbase you could tap into that might support them because they already love the Panthers image. All that said, I have to say that Charlotte FC is better than Charlotte Town. I mean maybe things are different in the US, but here a town is a couple of thousand people max. Charlotte is a pretty huge city, not a town. Town just feels wrong for a big club. Any football club with 'Town' in the name is probably shit. Oh and St Louis had the perfect opportunity to say screw you to Kroenke and use the St Louis Rams name. Just change the logo a little, and take back what's yours. Rams would be a great name for a soccer team, it's the nickname of Derby County already (btw counties are usually shit teams as well) and they have a rams head badge. Ah well. Wonder if the next Franchise will be United, City or FC? Or maybe they'll mix it up a bit with a Rovers.

I really wish these expansion teams would do more with their name than just slapping FC at the end and calling it a day. That's why for now my favorite is Inter Miami. Even if I plan on leaving the state of Florida I still like that they did something no other MLS team has done plus they have David Beckham as the owner. Like Charlotte FC could've capitalized on the city's history as the main hub for NASCAR and called themselves Racing Club Charlotte, the Charlotte Pacers, or the Charlotte Thunder. As for a few others (If I could come up with names), I'd prefer names like the Austin Express, the St. Louis Archers, the Cincinatti Lions, and the Nashville Stars.

As a fellow Fire fan, I would much rather keep the Florian cross, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s gone or significantly less prominent. That shade of blue/purple is actually kinda cool., but I recognize this is unpopular.

As a CF97 supporter as well, I feel exactly the same way. I used to be a Section 8 season ticket holder before I moved away (I payed dues to the ISA and went to meetings, etc). I haven't watched a match since they unveiled the rebrand - simply because whatever this thing: it isn't my football club anymore. They jettisoned every reference to what we were and shoved an entirely new identity down onto us instead. I honestly thought CF97 was dead. The news of them scrapping the rebrand and making an effort to return to what we were has me feeling cautiously(!!!) optimistic... but this club has wronged many of us repeatedly and ignored/marginalized us consistently. Honestly, what can we expect? The sports landscape in NA is oligarchic; I was shocked they even considered fixing their mess at all. As always seems to be the case with anything related to CF97, my anxiety persists. To quote Andrew Wiebe(?), "the Free Space is disappointment".

I think why I've contributed so many of the almost 34,000 views at this point is so I can leave a comment other than expressing amusement at the opening. My favorite of these new logos is StL City's. Danny said in his logo ranking video that the red doesn't stand out enough on the dark blue background on RSL or the Fire's logos; St. Louis found a way to fix it. I think the fact that the blue is nearly as dark as that worn by the Texans in the NFL and also the red being so bright both help with that. I agree that CF Montreal's snowflake is nice ("pleasing to the eye," as Danny put it). The new team name is weird though. I'd be surprised if that was actual French for "football club." For the Dynamo, my only thoughts were, they added FC to the end of the name like the Fire and, the hexagon shape is unique in MLS (and probably not all that common in all of soccer). The absence of the silver makes me wonder if they're ditching it. But then, St. Louis' logo doesn't include the yellow. For Charlotte, all I really thought of was another crown and circle and I expected the color scheme, what with being run by the owner of the Panthers. I expect some new logo for Sacramento. I just hope they stick with the Republic name. Last but not least, Danny's and my shared favorite team: the Fire. To use Danny's baseball metaphor when he was talking about the Dynamo, not only is the oval badge "not ... a home run"; it's a flat out foul ball! Emphasis on "foul." I left a comment yesterday on an Instagram post of theirs thanking them for listening to the fans and expressing excitement at what they come up with. I'm right with Danny on saying that getting input from fans "is so appreciated." I'd like one of the stars from the city flag as the shape of the badge.

From St. Louis. Color is fantastic and the badge certainly is getting better with time, but the name certainly missed the point. Without getting too much into it, the city is independent from St. Louis county and there it a huge divide between the city, county and the region as a whole. If you’re gonna have a classic soccer name, United would have actually made sense because soccer and sports in general is what unites the region. Oh well, it’s not the worst. I do like the choice of naming the team SC though. We aren’t in Europe and, alternatively, we were the original Soccer City in America.

I am biased as a Sounders fan but I think the league should have stayed with the North American style of naming for all of its teams. I'm tired of trying to fit in with Europe, its OK for us to be our own thing and have the city+nicknames formula. Half of the 'FC' or 'United' style teams have a nickname anyways ex. Minnesota Loons and Orlando City Lions
@BKIslandersfan
@BKIslandersfan 3 жыл бұрын
This is ultimately my beef with teams like Minnesota and Orlando. The reason why teams in Europe have the nickname is because thats what fans referred to them as. There;s history behind it. Minnesota United naming themselves united and then putting Loons on their badge and then pushing for people to use Loons nickname is absolutely superficial and disingenuous. Call yourself the Loon then.

what really bothers is me that AP and broadcast styling guides require writers and broadcasters to call them "Sounders FC" when really FC isn't part of the nickname. No one refers to Liverpool as Liverpool FC, for example.

I see your point, but in my opinion nobody is more Euro-centric than the Sounders, the Timbers, the Earthquakes and Montreal Impact (before they rebranded themselves). All those names were of teams that played in NASL. Nothing is more European than reincarnating old names of teams that folded in the past (all those were created in mid-1970s and later folded when NASL folded itself). The names are great though. By the way all teams in Europe have indication that it's football club, but nobody says "FC", because everybody knows. In my country FC is always in front of the team's name.

As a Brit who watches the premier league, circular badges and names like City, FC, United seem normal to me, but the names in the MLS where the club nickname is part of the official name was refreshing and unique. The fact they are trying to reflect all the other leagues with their standard titles feels like it is taking away their identity. Very few clubs in the UK have a title in their names, the only ones I can really think of are Tottenham Hotspurs, Nottingham Forrest and Sheffield Wednesday, and I'm not even sure if Wednesday is a nickname or just another suffix. The other clubs all still have nicknames, like the Red Devils, Toffees, Cherries and the Saints, but usually it's only the fans that know them. The fact that MLS teams are/were usually known as these things, like impact, fire, galaxy and earthquakes, it's cool and fun and I hope they don't all dissapear.

Sacramento is going to have to change their badge if I am not mistaken. I may be remembering this wrong but I am pretty sure the MLS will not allow teams to use badges or colors that they used in the USL. At least thats what was released by Nashville SC when they announced their logo and color change from the USL. Most people in town here wanted to keep the old colors and badge but the ownership group said at the announcement event MLS made them change it.

Charlotte should have went with Charlotte Town FC in my opinion! It would have kept it with the traditional feel like they were wanting but also makes it unique in MLS and makes sense for Charlotte since they call it uptown all the time. Would fit for the locals, kept it tradional, and unique in America
Remember in MLS when the WIZARDS became SPORTING KANSAS CITY
