When someone close to me has died, I continue to feel heir presence. It is like they have moved to another country, or they are AWOL or missing in action. So even though they're gone, it feels like they are still alive. I usually dream about them, experience their articular fragrance now and then, I might hear their voice in dreams or when I'm thinking about them. My deceased mother called me on the phone once when I was half asleep, lol. Her voice was so vivid it scared me out of my witts . I experience her when I read her handwritten recipes and taste the results. The spirit of the dead continues to live all around us, imo. Likewise, we can have bad experiences with the dead nightmares or anxious thoughts. In life they shared their consciousness with us and they became part of ours.

At nearly 87 I have, for the very first time heard what I have thought is likely to be the truth about death. It is only after a long and satisfying working life and an equally lengthy and happy retirement that a person feels fulfilled and and full of gratitude for the great privilege of having been born and quite ready to take leave of this beautiful planet. Why would any person wish to live forever?!

I fully understand how you must feel and until quite recently, as a Catholic, I too believed in life after death. I am the very last member of a large family and felt sure that I would meet up with them all after my death. Stephen Cave's views are not necessarily the truth! No one knows for sure. I truly believe that love is a bond which never dies and our dear ones are in some way always with us, especially in our hearts, and remain with each of us until we too die. The idea however that we should wish to live for ever is quite another matter!

My mother passed away and she seemed to be free of suffering at that point. Experiencing terror because you fear death isn't justification for fearing it itself. If death is a void, what's there to fear? If it's not, we aren't actually dead.

Death is just apart of every day thoughts; we go to funeral homes when we are little, we are told we live at the 11th hour; always be ready for death, that is to say, living in the next echelon is hours away. Makes one enjoy life more knowing they are at the 11th hour of life, as well, the fear of death is not horrific, it's accepted.

Great quote, thanks for sharing. Many of Shakespeare's works were renditions. I think his went something like: "There’s a special providence in the fall of a sparrow. If it be now, ’tis not to come. If it be not to come, it will be now. If it be not now, yet it will come-the readiness is all." Seems originality was a tough gig even back in the 16th century.

It may be true that we are biased towards believing something that comforts us when it comes to death. However, this does not prove that the theory we believe in is false in itself. For a person who believes in the infinite power of the One Supreme Creator, is it so strange to believe that He can resurrect from the earth what He Himself created in the first place? The point of this life is to realize life's purpose and the reason for your creation. How is it that life is just about living and dying? How has our universe been created in such perfect balance if we are not meant to realize the purpose of its creation and what its Creator and our Creator asks of us? We are obligated to use our power of reasoning and our intellect to search for the truth and meaning of this life. The universe hasn't come out of nothing..Nothing comes out of nothing. We can't just live and die without thinking about our purpose here, while assuming there isn't anything more to life than that..

I wish I could be euthanized cause my body sure isn't taking the fkn hint! I am suffering so very badly that I beg for death. I never used to feel this way until getting physically ill so quickly. I tend to think there must be a supreme or master intellect, I have a hard time believing “time” could simply generate all the complexity and diversity of life we see. That said, there isn’t any evidence of an afterlife, there has never been any kind of human contact with anything genuinely spiritual. All the worlds religious constructs attempt to achieve this, but they are the machinations of men. For all we know we are the germs in the cells of a superior being, or some sort of science experiment. I don’t see how the acknowledgement of some sort of creator or sustainer of the universe defacto leads to an afterlife.

The question he should be asking is... what is the purpose of life? why live at all if at the end we just die? why do we have to die in the first place? Once these questions remain unanswered, people will continue to have faith in things such as God. With all the evil in this world and the killings evil men do, i think it would be very foolish to think such acts can go unpunished. There's more to life than what meets the eye. Not everything is written in stone and perhaps if people stopped looking for fact and focus on the spiritual side of things, you may discover something new.

Katherine Gordon I did read about Steve Jobs and admired him in many ways, but my heart cries for him, because it seems that he lived without God and died without Him. For those who know the Lord personally death is just a step and like going home. Jesus Christ gives meaning to any life, peace and love that drives away all fear and assurance of salvation. Get yourself a Bible, start reading the gospel of John and ask God to speak to you. I hope and pray that it will become like a love letter to you and that you will come to know God personally and live for Him. My desire is to live for Him, because He changed everything. People like Richard Wurmbrand spend many years in jail, and so many others, many died, but they are certainly alive. Why did they face persecution and why did they not deny their Lord? Because He was with them and they knew their bodies may die, but they will live forever and ever in glory with Him.Seek the web of Ian McCormack and may God open your eyes. Katherine Gordon Co 15:20 But the fact is that Christ has been raised from the dead. He has become the first of a great harvest of those who will be raised to life again. 1Co 15:21 So you see, just as death came into the world through a man, Adam, now the resurrection from the dead has begun through another man, Christ. 1Co 15:22 Everyone dies because all of us are related to Adam, the first man. But all who are related to Christ, the other man, will be given new life. 1Co 15:23 But there is an order to this resurrection: Christ was raised first; then when Christ comes back, all his people will be raised. 1Co 15:24 After that the end will come, when he will turn the Kingdom over to God the Father, having put down all enemies of every kind. 1Co 15:25 For Christ must reign until he humbles all his enemies beneath his feet. 1Co 15:26 And the last enemy to be destroyed is death. 1Co 15:27 For the Scriptures say, "God has given him authority over all things." (Of course, when it says "authority over all things," it does not include God himself, who gave Christ his authority.) 1Co 15:28 Then, when he has conquered all things, the Son will present himself to God, so that God, who gave his Son authority over all things, will be utterly supreme over everything everywhere.

As like you would be sick without a possibility of cure for it and you would die alone and pass out eternally from all the things that you have wanted from life. It's like this would be your world view so that it's impossible to get rid of it. It's made like other people would wish things like this for you and nothing ever fixes these conceptions that this world and time constantly brings to you. Even long times don't seem to fix any of these, they are so stuck in everywhere. What happens when we die, and you will, is you die. As a Christian, that's the Bible's message. You die, not metaphorically, not symbolically, you end... What the Bible says, however, is that there will be life again. There is a resurrection. Some raised to life and the rest raised (those not in Christ) to be judged and cast into the lake of fire (metaphor) known as "the second death" (actual, dying again, finally). There is one resurrection (for all) and two deaths... You get to choose how many deaths you will experience, just one, or both. Choose Jesus.

It is a wishful thinking that one could get rid of fear of death by exercising one's rationality. We think that rationality can have a huge impact on our behavior but the fact of the matter is - much of latter is locked in a heavy evolutionary lag. The reason we fear death is not because of our linguistically-reinforced illusions such as "the self" viewed as separate from the brain or body (when we say "my brain", or "my body") and thus of our erroneous assumption that death is an experience and it is terrible and to be feared. Quite the opposite, - those cognitive developments, just like our advanced human consciousness are secondary to fear of death because it is a serious evolutionary advantage to fear death for any species, (except in cases where dying assures abundant reproductive success). Rationalizing about dying will not get rid of fear of death anymore than thinking about one's diaphragm can stop hiccups. It's like superstitious behavior (found in birds and mammals), both atheists and the religious are often guilty of it, most of the time - not realizing it. the most common strategy we utilize in our fight with fear of the inevitable is distraction. Another problem I see is "making it a good story". Good for whom? Who really evaluates how good of a story your life was and which criteria are used for such evaluation? Would it not serve to reinforce the same neurotic tendencies which religion reinforces, - like fear of not living "a good novel"? Feeling guilty, perhaps, that your novel is boring? And finally what is intrinsically wrong with living forever, discovering a real way to do so? It doesn't at all appear to be an absolute impossibility, at least from technological perspective.... I think that it is prudent to examine a philosophy not only for its logical coherence but from the perspectives of psychology as well.

It is believed that the universe is finite. That particles will disintegrate at some point. So if the system we're based on has a finite lifetime, how should we ever achieve an infinite one? The issues will remain the same, no matter if you'll live 80 or 800 years.

"The fear of death is natural but not rational"- beautifully put by the aforementioned philosopher. From my viewpoint, the idea of death plays an important role in ones life although it'll be biased towards the way we perceive things because I believe that we have a life to enjoy but not to experience the fear of death like we can say that if there's life, there is no death and otherwise. The four keywords. Elixir. Resurrection. Soul. Legacy. The vocabulary of science being the misnomer quite a few times brings so much win. Elixir is such a thing that people believe will heal their wounds. A mistake's a mistake. It'll purify their soul is what the superstition people usually have. Resurrection is one important aspect that could be experienced by everyone if they take it in a way they should. Legacy is just a chickenshit.

I think logically, if we die then we experience emptiness / unconsciousness, when a random infinite universe accidentally creates us physical body form that coincides with our current state now, then we will rise again and regain consciousness, and we unconsciousness will feel consciousness again in an instant moment, because the unconsciousness never knows or never realizes how much time has passed, even though our unconsciousness lasts for a very long time, for example millions of years or billions of years, maybe even trillions ... years of unconsciousness will only be felt as a lifetime again.

Stéphane Ehouman Exactly, this is where it gets confusing - we're approaching a point reminiscent of catch-22 where we argue about rational irrationality and irrational rationality. It's still beside the point, though. The distinction I would make, which conforms to what I've said already (and the point of this video), is between the fear of being killed or endangering your life AND the fear of not existing any more. My point is that you are focusing on the wrong distinction - the fear of being killed or endangering your life - when the point of the video is the fear of not existing any more. Actively fearing tropical waters as there are sharks present is different to worrying and stressing about your mortality because you fear not existing any more.

Why would anyone fear the one thing you can bank on happening. Surely life should be lived in a way that makes dieing ok.

He does not get all of it. It is not just about fear of death. All traditional societies have a way of teaching a pragmatic way of accepting death. There is a quest in human heart about the meaning of existence which drives us to explore an extended existence, which does not have anything to do with the fear of ones own death

@@kategordon1960 what evidence? He isn't basing this.. because he didn't make it up. Lots of people believe this you can find lots of information yourself EASILY. Don't try pull that and make yourself sound smart by saying nothing. You are a spirit not a human... that is pre much it but believe what u will idgaf. Before religions even started mediums were focusing and meditating chakras. Religions copied that in a simple prayer. I'm not explaining anymore
Eh, not quite. People believe the immortality stories because of fear of death. People believe Stephen Cave's story because it provides a way not to fear death to begin with. It provides a way to be content with the fact that we are mortal.

But I do have hope in that resurrection and I dont see why it should be wrong to have hope in it, if I have reasoning behind it. Your fear of death doesnt make it real but if you have good critical reasoning to believe in it, then we shouldnt sweep the believer into a box marked 'just scared of death'

Heb 9:27 And just as it is destined that each person dies only once and after that comes judgment, Heb 9:28 so also Christ died only once as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again but not to deal with our sins again. This time he will bring salvation to all those who are eagerly waiting for him. Joh 14:6 Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

When we die no god will come to wipe the tears of our parents and loved ones even though we believe god and pray every day . People will either burn or bury us no one will keep us and pray . Any living being is valued only until it has life and human is the only exceptional . Only our love , goodness , memories nd values lives forever .

it will take time, perhaps generations. i do not expect this miraculous drug effect to be a pill at first but in time the cumulative scientific progress of human health will most certainly produce some of the desired goals. There are to many educated people working towards this goal to see at-least some form of it not realized. This is not prophecy, it is an educated guess but all sings point to this possibility, despite what the author/speaker would have you believe.
