Just go look at the "Police were originally slave patrol" comment to justify it was rooted in racism. With one google search you can prove with 100% certainty that's total garbage and just a left wing talking point. @@ErrorMoose I completely understand both arguments. Lilly has no experience in the department, but there are other valid points. Many people are dying suddenly due to policing. And with that, there is a pattern. Maybe we don't have to defund, but we definitely have to bring awareness.

Thank you Lilly for using your voice and platforms to talk about important societal issues.♥️ People that advocate for defunding the police departments aren't demanding the total abolishment of police departments to allow people to engage in nefarious acts all willy-nilly. It's about demanding reform and funding for mental health professionals to handle the situations where one is enduring a mental health crisis...to de-escalate the situation without the end-result being fatal.

Calls where a person specifically states an individual is having a mental health crisis can be handled by a person who is trained in mental health. A mental health professional is trained in how to de-escalate a situation relative to a mental health crisis, inclusive of any additional measures that may be warranted. Well, as a foreigner and the Russian I can say that from the outside what's happening with the USA police seems like using the specially trained forces on petty crimes. Like, not even thoroughly trained special forces. That Floyd guy was killed not because the policeman hated him personally, I mean that's a possibility, but why was that possible? Instead of cuffing him and simply sitting on the back while other policemen are scouting surroundings, like they do here in Russia when they deal with petty crimes, he used a knee chokehold. That does happen here when they know that the person might have a gun, they search for weapon while doing it and then let go, as well as I know. And that policeman wasn't alone there, so they could've apprehended him together and appeal to consciousness, again, like they do here in "police brutality on the reign" Russia. It actually is on the reign and they are corrupt as fuck, but it doesn't usually concern petty criminals like that Floud guy was, if what the police was called for was even true. With that type of accusation they don't even apprehend here in Russia, it's not that he killed someone to receive this treatment. Here the only way to get actually intentionnaly killed by the police is that if you're being in the criminal/terrorist group they are scouting out, and they send omon guys or/and special operatives on you. The forces dealing with the drug-dealers have their own special ops and different ammunition. The common policeman doesn't even go on calls where there's a sign of anybody with a gun. They go into drunken brawls but their priority, as I've been told, are the people around, not to get into the brawl itself to hurt somebody. Here your local policeman is actually a social worker in a way, sometimes they even fill in the role of firemen if they are the first responders, or help deal with ER emergencies on site. Again, the higher ups are corrupt as fuck and we all know it, but it's chill if you know the rules and act sane. They are actually tought the signs of mental disorders (most of the cases here come with alcohol abuse) and call for psyco-squad guys, big dudes that are capable of packing an equally big dude into their van and calming them down. I mean, I thought that's the thing that happens everywhere, no? Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but I hope the things would get better.

It wont change anything. Because police shootings are happening at police related calls, so police will still attend police related calls and will still shoot people when appropriate. And, with human error and the quantity of calls that police are responding, there will still be fuckups. We will never have 0 police shootings.

Cop here. Ironically when the Defund the Police calls came out a lot of my co-workers were for it. We figure the homeless calls and the mental health calls would be better suited for law enforcement units. And we hated the Karen calls too. However problems arose when Defund the Police got mixed up with Abolished the Police and Minneapolis voted to shut down their department. The big thing about governments is it's always a fight for every penny. Also a lot of non-law enforcement problems end up turning into law enforcement problems. Car accidents? Traffic code violations or drunk driver. Sometimes the drivers end up fighting. Mental health calls? An unarmed clinician would be preferred but what if the patient is harming someone/had harmed someone? Drug overdose call? Protect the EMTs and do the death investigation if the person ends up dying. This not an argument against reform. But if reform is going to happen it's going to require a lot of thinking of every scenario how we as a society are going to reallocate responsibly and power. Would a civilian traffic investigator have the legal authority to issue traffic tickets? Would a civilian clinician have the training and ability to use force to defend themselves or others if a mental health patient tries to harm them or others? Maybe a better slogan would have been Rethink the Police.

Not exactly "Defund", but re allocate some of the funds towards specialists who could handle some of the tasks which the police is handling, but requires a different set of skills to handle, other than the skills which the police staff is given.

This is one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard in my life. There are a few tasks police officers shouldn't be involved with, but most of those are related to medical assistance. If you put social workers in situations that often turn violent, you're going to end up with a lot of dead social workers and the police being called anyway.

You realize that no one disagrees on this right? But this is no longer an argument of Defunding, or even re-allocating... To adequately fund additional social services, you need to increase taxation. In a perfect world, would a subject matter expert respond to every call for help? Of course. In a real world, we cant afford that, so we send services like the police to respond to a variety of complaints. I'm all for adding additional services, but we need to get rid of the "defund movement" and start the "Increase my taxes by 300%" movement. Because thats what you will need to spend to get what people are requesting.

Can we talk about raising younger kids with more respect for officers? Yes obviously we need police reform, but we need better officers, let's be real, joe cashier is supposed to make a snap judgment about what specialists to call when random person walks into the store screaming nonsense and threats? The idea that there is a perfect blanket solution is nieve at best. Reform yes, retrain yes rebuild absolutely, but de-funding would make all of these necessary changes impossible.

Even if we make police stop doing non-police work, does that really help? They would still be using excessive force and they would still not be held accountable. The problem seems to be a rotten police culture and politically entrenched police unions that will defend the very worst behavior from officers. So dismantle the police unions, then fire and replace all the police. We'd also have to enact Australia-style gun control so that both civilians and police are disarmed symmetrically.

Young lady, if you happen to read this... what you're talking about isn't as splendid as you're presenting it to be. In my country they already did this and there are numerous problems that you maybe don't realize yet. Practical everyday problems apart from that it basically didn't have any real influence on crime rate but there are plenty of funding, logistic, jurisdiction issues. People that are not cops don't get as much training "because what for" and this in turn lead to issues. Also noone is certain who is responsible for what and to what degree. People are often in the situation when they can't get help because "this is not our department". People don't know who can legally do what and other major problems. There are issues between department considering funding, equipment, payroll, retirement plans that sometimes cause even more trouble that actually influence the job that is supposed to be done. You don't mention these as you don't have any experience and everything you say would be purely theoretical at this point. Here, after about two decades of this experiment we have a process of slowly reverting back. So maybe as fun and logical (just at first glance) as those stipulates are, in a scope of the whole country it's not going to end as great as you imagine. Save yourself a couple of decades.

A high percentage of times, drugs and guns go together and even a regular civilian or even a kid in America has gun access. Under the circumstances, you cannot play hunky dory and send a mental health counsellor. Be real. Police should have a negotiator department for hostage, addiction and mental health situations. Also, until you actually reach the spot, you dont know what level of crime is waiting for you. If civilians were unarmed, then all this talk would make sense.
