The silver lining of the past two years is that our quilting communities are now international. Through Zoom, KZbin and Instagram we can find and interact with quilters from the other side of the globe. Today’s guest Amira Ameruddin, lives in Malaysia. She discovered quilting while studying abroad and is now a pattern designer and an accomplished free motion quilter on her domestic sewing machine.

I just love meeting quilters from around the world. Amira is just as passionate about quilting as I am all the way on the other side of the world. Quilting in a hot humid climate has it's challenges. But the more we talked it was our similarities that connected us. So grab your sewing and a cup of tea and enjoy.

Hello, Amira and Karen, wonderful to connect and to make known to others that quilting is a world connecting craft. I'm a quilter in Melaka, Malaysia, and I buy all my tools and fabrics in Malaysia itself. There are good quilt shops in Kuala Lumpur whose national mail costs are cheaper than international deliveries. Also no custom problems involved. Delivery time is very short. The Australian craft and quilter shop 'spotlight' has several branches in KL and online orders are easy, fast and sometimes even free within Malaysia. Happy quilting and stitching greetings from Melaka, Angela And I found quilt shops in Singapore too which is close to Johore...

I love this quilter's enthusiasm. I can so relate to her family since my father used to make all sorts of wood projects which my son has inherited the talent for; and my mother used to make all sorts of things on her sewing machine which was back in the days of straight stitch only so if we wanted embroidery it was needle in hand (and we did that too). It's really so lovely to be in a family of makers; it seems like creativity just flows amongst us whether we are together visiting or simply emailing back and forth.

Such a fun and inventive lady! So inspired by her tenacity! I wanted to "high-five" her when she made the statement about labels. A few years ago, I handled an estate sale for the brother of a quilter/collector/hoarder. Of over 200 quilts, only about 5 were labeled! He and his 4 siblings were out of luck being able to save his mother's and sister's quilts. I am going to look up Amira's blog and keep up with her. Thank you for this introduction! What a treasure!

I recommend to buy Bali Batik, sister Amira. You can buy in Indonesia. I bet it's cheaper than if you buy it in US. And also the shipping won't cost so much. Bali Batik quality is really fine and the patterns are so various. I see many quilters around the world use Bali Batik. I love it as well :)

Great interview Karen. Nice to meet Amira and her happy outlook on crafting. Wondering where abouts she lived while here in Australia studying. Maybe it would be cheaper to order fabrics from Australia than the U.S. I must look closer at Amiras 100 day quilt. I have Angies book ready for next year. Yesterday I received my fat quarter bundle of Tula Pink Daydreamer fabrics.(first time buying a designer bundle .)So pretty that I will have trouble cutting them up. From Sydney Australia 💛🇦🇺

I use to live in Canberra and used to visit quilt store there often when I was living there. There’s just something about walking into quilt stores that just won’t ever be matched shopping online.. I tried buying from Australia but ended up with it being more expensive and the shipping takes the same amount of time too..

Does she use batting inside her quilts? If so, what type? I'm assuming that she does (because she quilts her quilts). However, Summer quilts are not batted. Mother used old thin white sheets inside her summer quilts. Thank you. I would have never known that quilts are made and used on the equator. You don't want to wash your fabrics before storing them. There are chimicals in the fabrics to protect them until they are washed.

Yes, I make quilts with batting. Light batting like cotton and bamboo are great for our night sleep here (sometimes in air-condition) We don’t cuddle with the quilts during the day though😆..

Wow, I feel really behind, she has done so much in a short time. Plus she has a career and small children. When does she sleep?
