His ball striking was superb, it’s the clutch putt that failed

Doug Saunders at St Andrews 72nd hole, missing a short putt, was very much like Rory on 72nd hole Sunday...it was like a replay.

As a 3 time Ryder Cupper, 3 time winner and 3 time runner upper (loss 3 playoffs won one) on the European Tour and top 20 golfer in the World, McGinley's critique has a lot more weight than Chambalee's brain fart. McGinley lost and won in similar situations on tour for decades. Rory wins multiple times per year and all but wins Majors. The stats and results show he is putting much better over the last 5 years since working with Faxon. But obviously, to seal the deal from less than 5 feet, not as good as Xander Keopka, Bryson, Scheffler or Woods and Faldo in their days. Obviously his swing mechanics are good enough to win majors (also 1st in total driving at US Open). What about hitting driver off 18 when he hit the fairway 3 days out of with 3 wood? No swing mechanics involved in sticking to your game plan. None. Putting: he missed the 4ft putt that he stood over motionless for an age after his eyes got to back to the ball, and then the weak prod on the fast l to r 2.5ft putt on 18 where the blade did not close naturally. The pressure (which is extreme) got to him on both. Needs to stick to his routine, staying moving and commit to a free flowing stroke (as he does on longer putts which where excellent).
