Agreed! I am so sick of all these people bashing Dior. Whether they knew or not, other luxury brands and companies as a whole are doing the same thing. Also, Dior is owned by LVMH. I don't see anyone wanting to boycott LVMH.

Well, now the companies have justification for even FURTHER price increases! I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a huge price hike at Dior (potentially others) and the companies justify it by announcing that they are ‘investing in their supply chain and manufacturing practices’ 🙄

Yes, how can they agree to such a thing, the production cost of the product may be less than one twentieth of their selling price, I will not pay such a high price for these luxuries, thank God I have good copy suppliers, let me get the same product at a better price.

Thank you for highlighting the workers' conditions, and this is so the main issue! I've heard that LVMH is known for increasing profits, and decreasing production costs is one way of doing this! Removing safety measures is really so wrong, and while I have no issue generally with the factories operating 24 hours a day, this is on the strict condition that workers' rights are respected and upheld (maximum working hours, minimum wages, minimum rest periods between shifts, safety measures etc)! As for the price, we all knew they didn't cost anywhere near as much as they are selling them for, in terms of materials and wages. What we don't know is how much marketing, Dior wages, boutiques, overheads, etc. are? In my opinion, there will be many brands who are trying to keep costs down and profits up! The difference between these manufacturing practices and those of fakes/ dupes is the intellectual property. The big brands will feel the crunch if we, the customer, vote with our feet. The people producing fakes will just move on to something else!

Outrageous, it makes no sense whatsoever. 💔 9:10 I completely agree with you! Especially after 2019, it has gotten out of control. We as the consumer still have a voice - it’s with our dollars. Thank you for this video! I think the problem is that brands are allowed to place "Made in [insert Euro country]" as long as one part of it is made in that country (and usually they just add finishing or some small final touch)...it also adjacently brings into light the perception of quality based on which country "makes" goods I love luxury handbags, but I'm more discerning now :/

This has been going on for years, I think one youtube content creator has discussed this few years ago. Some or majority of the luxury brands are probably doing this for years now. If you notice that the quality has gone down, that is your answer. It's not just Dior or Armani, I am sure there are others. Bags are manufactured in other countries, then it arrives in say, France or Italy, one they stitched the label in Italy or France, this can be considered as made in Italy or France.

Surprise, surprise. But trust me, it's not just Dior. The reality is that 99% of luxury brands are produced in basement factories by Chinese and other Asian workers. These brands sell thousands of bags every day across the globe. There simply aren’t enough highly skilled Italian craftsmen to meet this demand. Moreover, we wouldn’t be seeing 1:1 copies of these bags on the market before they even hit retail shelves if they were all made in traditional workshops. The replicas are now so precise that they even duplicate the microchips, which can be scanned in stores and identified as authentic! How is this possible? It’s only feasible if someone within the original factories is selling the blueprints to manufacturers in China. And no, these replicas aren’t made by “kids.” Don’t be fooled by that myth. The rumor that children are behind these counterfeit products was likely started by luxury brands themselves to discourage you from buying identical bags at a fraction of the price.

For me now, I don't see the prestige of having a luxury bag that I pay a lot of money for but that is actually worth the same price as a copy and that is probably made in the same Chinese industries by the same abused employees. 🤦‍♀️I'm really thinking about selling mine! 🤔

To answer your main question why Dior doesn’t have its own factories / workshop I think: They don’t have to deal with the fixed overheads (rent, electricity, salaries etc) associated with running a factory / workshop. They are someone else’s problem and all they do is pay a fixed amount per bag for a steady supply of bags with no headache. When I say headache imagine a situation where they own the factory and one month they only sell 100 bags and then another month 200 bags regardless of how many bags they sell their overheads are fixed and if they have less money coming in but fixed, possibly high costs it’s puts them in a tricky situation. No factory = someone else’s headache Thank you for continuing the conversation.

Glad I sold my LadyDior prior to the news, but I suspect this problem is not only under Dior but the entire LVMH house, and maybe elsewhere. Its hard to trust luxury designers from now on because we dont know for sure the conditions related to each piece.

I think the biggest difference is that you can get the same product with better money, there is almost no difference between the quality of the replica and the quality of the original, so I will not pay a high price for these luxuries, I prefer to buy the same product with less money, the same quality.

Exactly, if they payed £$53 they know they are cutting corners with bad working conditions and not properly paying the workers. For shame Dior! I am very aware of the cost markup to cover the staff at all levels, business/employee/facility real estate, insurance and utilities, plus publicity etc; but the markup isn’t really the issue, the issue is the sweatshop conditions, while pretending to be luxury and ethical. I had slowly (now abruptly) been dropping all the LVMH brand. Mr Bernard the money (and power) hoarding fat cat is ruining the brands. 😢

Led me to believed the workers were appreciated and treated as artisans and master crafters. They know what was going on, DIOR had too if they paid so little for a bag )-: I am so very sad......

Thank you, Lou, for such a candid video about this scandal. I agree with you 100% that in NO WAY this scandal should encourage people to buy replicas instead of original luxury bags. The counterfeit industry is totally unethical and criminal. I only have 8 designer bags, and all of them are considered "entry bags." I would love to purchase a Chanel or a Hermès, but I cannot afford it and will NEVER contribute to the replica market (money laundry, human traffic for slave labor purposes, children labor exploitation and so on).

According to Italian law, there are no limits to how much of a product must be made in Italy to be labeled "Made in Italy". This means that brands can source and produce their products overseas, then have them sent to Italy for final assembly and still use the label. The percentage of Italian work that goes into a product is calculated based on cost, rather than time. For example, if most of the work is done in China, but an Italian is paid to put on the finishing touches, the product can still be labeled "Made in Italy.” I learned of this years ago by Italians who sold goods for Gucci 🤷🏽‍♀️

I guess you don't become the richest man in France by having ethics and high standards for your company. I really hope more comes out of this investigation and we get some transparency on what brands are engaging is such despicable practises. I can honestly say, for me personally, if this were to happen it would very much dictate what brands I would and wouldn't be comfortable buying from. As of right now I'm hesitant to buy from any of them until more information comes out. Unethical working conditions are not luxury!

I’m going to be honest here. I have less desire than ever to buy luxury handbags. The same is not true for jewelry, watches and shoes. I own a Patek but will pair it with a LongChamp bag or a $10 Amazon fanny pack and my lululemon clothes. I genuinely don’t like the look of fashion handbags. I think they look pretencious, they are very annoying to use because you have to baby them, you get more attention than you need, you get more attention wearing a 10k handbag than a 80k watch, then it rains and you have to be careful about it - with my fanny pack I am in and out of places and no one looks at me, it rains and I couldn’t care less, I also find it more elegant to be honest. A lot of designer handbags are also uncomfortable to use, too small, doesn’t expand, annoying to travel with them. I have Hermes, Chanel, I regret buying all of them because they sit in my closet and I never wear them nor bring them to vacations.

They are not gonna built their own facotories and start making bags by hand. Their key thing is to make money to owners and stock owners. They don’t care about artistry and craftmanship. Outside Florence there is a town that is all Chinese people. That’s where all luxury brands manufacture their products. They have been doing this for decades. There are plenty of artisans in Florence that make their own bags in their workshop in the back of the store. Of course never buy bags in the outside markets. It’s funny that Dior has been sending out bags to influencers with a retail price of $5k. People wonder if those bags are a lower quality? Well they are not lower quality, they all come from the Chinese factories in Florence region.

@@christinagreen1681all of the stolen items end up in the resale market. “Preloved” is a fancy word for second hand. Many preloved items does not come with papers and no one questions them because of the “preloved” label, the owner threw it out and so on. First these items are stolen during house robberies, hotel rooms, or even snatched on the street. We have been seeing many house robberies lately from influencers and increase in luxury items stolen particularly luxury watches in the UK. Then, these items are passed on to middle man who specializes in moving illicit items most of the time through borders. Just look at influencers getting robbed in one country then seeing their items being sold online from a retailer in another country. Then the retailer claims they “never knew” about the robbery because they got the item from someone else. These items end up in retail stores either online or consignment stores that you walk in and see a cute label with “preloved” written on it. They passed on from hand to hand to hand, anyone can walk into a “preloved” store and claim that bag or watch was theirs and they would like to sell it.

This isn't surprising at all. It's just surprising because the quality and details of a Dior bag are amazing so to think that someone is working in terrible conditions sewing those beautiful patterns on a book tote is sad. I don't like this however when I was in Florence last summer literally everyone knew that there were Chinese workers that make luxury bags in and outside of the city. Those same workers also make the $50 ones you get at the local stands that are everywhere. There is no difference between the knockoff and the so-called "authentic". One shop owner even told me that some factories would sell them the "auth" ones that didn't pass inspection due to some minor flaws. If you know the history of some fashion houses you would know that knockoffs are a part of their business. The only difference is that you feel good knowing you can pay so much more over cost in a fancy store with champagne, thus giving you confidence. Hey, whatever floats your boat. People who comment on the knockoffs and "know" the conditions for sure is a joke. Literally, every major retailer has known issues with labor laws, not just in clothing.

LVMH’s other brands likely take part in these same practices, & LVMH owns like half of the brands we discuss- Fendi, Givenchy, Loewe, Louis Vuitton, Bulgari- all LVMH. This is the main reason I generally do not buy most luxury brands anymore. It’s all so gross and disappointing. It’s really crazy when we remind ourselves of the terrible working conditions that many things are produced in. I don’t think I was under the impression that luxury bags were all hand crafted by artisans, but hearing that they’re just made in China like everything else, for $50 makes you realize how corrupt these companies are. It’s not surprising though, I never thought luxury items were actually superior to lower cost bags just because of the price, like I knew you can produce the same thing for much much less. It’s just terrible to imagine these companies “scamming” their customers out of $5000, $8000 or more, and then producing the items for $50. I don’t own luxury items and I’m not sure I will ever buy one. But we also need to be aware consuming all these cheap items from Amazon, TEMU, SHEIN which is also the trend on social media. The world has gotten very excessive with cheap and fast online shopping. I’m saying in general, not you Lou~

I have seen brands mark up their new collections' prices once these items go viral online! I consider this also unethical! The only thing that changed since they launched it on their website is that the product went viral and they instantly raised the price on these items! This is not luxury brand behaviour for me.

Luxury fashion started failing once all these brands became a part of a conglomerate. And also, let’s not add onto the fact that a lot of them are greedy. It gets incredibly unsustainable when you are so focused on trying to make sure your growth from a shareholder perspective, maintains itself. They only do these price increases just to let the shareholders know that they are growing. But in turn, they start cutting back on a lot of stuff. I’m not surprised about the unethical B behavior behind a lot of these brands and for the most part, it’s hard to differentiate how their practices are any different from the rep market

Dior MOSTLY subcontracts, a lot of these brands do. But annoyingly, Dior have always sold themselves as using artisans...I guess maybe for their samples but not for the sold items. smh. Extremely misleading. They were happy with paying for cheap labour and never questioned it. Its a sad reality because that is why I'm so against fast fashion, and you're correct - what is the difference then ethically between real and fake.

There has been no difference for many years between reps and the real fashion brands for a long while now unfortunately. I used to always want real luxury items but honestly paying 10% of the price for a dupe that is 95% as good has been a no brainer for me in a while. It is all extremely unethical. Many replicas are made with the exact same leathers and canvas that the luxury brands use and in the same factory!

This reminds me so much of the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in America. During that time frame, these working conditions were so common. But it all began to crumble when the Tringle Shirtwaist Factory burnt down in 1911. 146 workers died in that fire. I don't know if this is a saying in Europe, but in the US, we have a saying, "It's all fun and games, until somebody gets hurt." That is basically what happened. Playing devil's advocate here, I find it really hard to hate on an entire company when sourcing products is decided by such a small group of people. It is entirely possible that only a small handful of people even knew about these "subcontractors." That doesn't give them an excuse, but I don't think it is alright to hate on the entire company or employees. Unfortunately, there are still places in the world that do not have the same labor laws and beliefs in human rights as we do. But I thank whoever spoke up and called out saying that something wasn't right. If that person hadn't spoken up, these workers would be continuing to suffer. It is heart breaking to see that these 1900s practices are continuing, but the more people speak up, the more ability we have to shut places like that down and make this world better for everyone. There is a lot of injustice that needs fixing in the world, but I'm thankful that we live in a world that no longer allows things like this to be swept under a rug.

Think you for speaking about this important topic. My favorite brand is Mulberry but I stopped bying them when they started producing their bags in China and Turkey. I saw a decreace in the quality but an increace of the price, hence the appeal of the brand wanished. This practice sadens me because as a customer I feel betrayed. If I had known I would never have spent my hard earned money on something I could have bought at a fast fashion chain. I hope the luxory brands change their ways and go back to their roots :).

I feel the same way! I love dior, especially buying at the store because the customer service I experience (especially as a black woman) has always been exceptional. However, it feels wrong to spend so much on something while the people who are making it are living through hell to feed their families. Dior needs to do better!

The only "Essence" they care about is the essence of $$ in their pockets. Not sure why this is news to anyone. Quite a few years ago a doco came out about their shady shoe manufacturing practices. Same story, either made in China for 9$ a pair or in an illegal sweatshop in Italy for 35 Euro a pair. People making those shoes are working in horrible conditions, the exact same ones that they shame Zara and H&M for. People working in Europe would sleep in their cars because they could not afford to pay rent despite working a ridiculous number of hours. They also had some of those employees "on the books" to make it look legit, they paid them a salary to a bank account and then drove them to the ATM and forced them to give most of the money back to the factory owner. There is no way in hell that those brands don't know this is happening. It's so despicable.

How it works is that they make all the parts in china, the leather, hardware, strap and then they are "assembled" in Italy. Therefore they can put made in Italy. There is a factory I know of that makes the Hermes hardware and it is possible to buy a replica with authentic hardware from the factory! It is also not true that reps fuel terrorism (how would a chinese factory do that anyway lol) and they do not use child labour. Im chinese and this doesnt happen and is a racist stereotype you need to get out of. They are made in the same factories that make other bags, Zimmermann etc.

I followed the company that made your blue wedding purse. I’m saving up for one because it’s a small company and I know where it is made. It’s beautiful and exceptional quality. Not going to waste my money anymore. I will be very selective when it comes to handbags now.

why is anyone surprised by this. I've always thought designer labels were overpriced and it's all for their profit margin. People have got to stop buying from these designer brands for this type of unethical practice to not continue. They need to look at all the fashion houses, especially Chanel.

As I've always said, having money doesn't mean you have to buy from big-name brands. Take Polène, for example, they make great bags with solid ethics, just like many other lesser-known brands. I believe in supporting quality and ethical practices, not just chasing a high price tag and prestige… I mean I can get white sneakers that are so comfortable and solidd for 150€ instead of 1500€ ! What really frustrates me, though, is seeing how some influencers repeatedly praise Polène on social media befire even buying a bag from them, not out of genuine admiration, but just to catch the brand's attention and get a free bag. It's baffling because they would never expect a free bag from a brand like Hermes or Chanel. Yet, they feel entitled to try this with smaller brands, which, in many cases, offer better quality and values. There are so many lesser-known clothing brands that offer high-quality materials and reasonable prices. Labels like Sezane, Reformation, and Everlane come to mind, each known for their commitment to quality and sustainability. Dressing well doesn’t mean you have to invest in luxury brands. In fact, it can start to feel like money laundering when people pay exorbitant prices for items like a La Mer face cream, which has little more to offer than a good drugstore product. It gets even more absurd when people buy something as basic as socks from high-end brands. Why not explore these more reasonably priced options instead?

(I think) yes. However, everyone has to make their own moral and informed decision. Are you wearing the bag bc you like it, or the status signaling logo for others' recognition. It's not just bags though, clothing, jewlery, food, etc. can all come from unethical means. 😢 For me, I will continue to wear my vintage 80's - 90's bags but cannot justify buying anything current (other than fragrances and makeup).

I would love to see luxury handbag bloggers really make a stop to this using their platform for example, those that make videos collecting handbags over the years if I can see them not continue to support companies like these I really do think it would make such a difference. But I’ve seen a couple just ignore what’s going on or continue to use the bags by the brand it really just seems like it doesn’t matter. Same thing happened with balenciaga they made the content but kept wearing

To be fair, I think it's very very difficult for any company to have full control and visibility over their supply chain. But these working conditions were heartbreaking and abominable. And considering Dior's ad campaigns touting the pristine nature of how these bags come into being, it really just smacks of hypocrisy. As an everyday consumer, I already feel guilt when I buy, say a $5 tank top off Amazon. I know enough to know that price tag comes with a different kind of price, one that I didn't have to pay. (My family is from Bangladesh and every time I see a made in Bangladesh label I always think how easily it could be me, sitting in a garment factory, sewing that tank top.) But it's not like not buying the tank top is going to help anybody either, because those workers need those jobs. So there's a certain amount of buy-in that we all do, just to function and enjoy the society we live in. But when it comes to luxury fashion, aside from the status (which, let's face it, we are all also buying into), the price used to be somewhat justified by its being seen as a kinder, gentler, overall nicer experience. Except one scandal after another is shaking that assumption. The Hermes lawsuit, the Balenciaga ad campaign, Dior's migrant worker scandal, even Chanel with its abrupt ouster of Virginie Viard. I don't know if I'm overstating, but it feels like the industry in general is in danger of depreciation. Which may be a good thing, I don't know. But it's concerning, because I don't want to spend that kind of money only to feel taken, or like I'm left holding the bag. As for the Dior specifically: considering it already doesn't do well on the resale market, I don't think it makes any sense right now to buy it at retail, just from a logical perspective, if not a moral one.
