Yellow Beefsteak tomatoes are my favorite and I am happy I no longer have to grow them because I can buy them from the farm down the street. @ 2:52 So true to buy the more rare tomatoes! We want to send a signal to the farmers to keep growing them. It sure does make my life easier, lol.

Which way is the best to store them at home? We usually put them in the fridge - but i've heard you should keep them somewhere just dark - not in the fridge? And they looook LOVELY
@ThisIsMyFullName9 жыл бұрын
You can always skin and boil the tomatoes, and then freeze it down for a basic sauce. But you can also make your own tomato pesto, tomato jam, tomato chutney, tomato pure, tomato ketchup, or you can make pickled cherry tomatoes with cinnamon sticks, so they are ready to eat for christmas time! I think it depends a lot on whether you buy them at a supermarket, or grow them yourself. Tomatoes you grow yourself have had more time to develop their natural flavour, and therefor the loss in smell, flavour and texture is noticeable. But tomatoes from the supermarket tend to be rather dull in comparison, because they often aren't given time to fully ripen on the tree.

I love the Indigo Rose for colour but yes they can be slow to ripen. Try putting a bit of tinfoil under the plant to encourage it to ripen sooner. A bit like we do with aubergines in the polytunnel (also handy for ripening). Best for flavour this year have been Money Maker, San Marzano, and Black Krim for us. It's like eating healthy sweets!

Awesome video! question. .. how do you keep them from cracking or splitting? thanks!
@RainbowGardens9 жыл бұрын
+Ana Cristina Owens Too much water can make them crack. Also, if the varieties you grow are thin skinned (like many heirlooms), they will crack easier than other varieties. Personally, I like the thin skinned tomatoes the best, so harvest them if they are almost ripe before expected rain (more water will make them crack as they ripen).

jamie kind of is the embodiment of the so called "amarican dream" (even if he is british). What shows that you can (not must) archive great things as long as you love what you do and work hard for it. The great thing here is, that everyonecould see him work his way up, starting with the "christmas at the river cafe"- episode back in 1999 to todays youtube channels. Keep it up!

Is it possible to grow tomatoes on a porch or similar if you live in the city? Any tips?
@ToastbrotRaver9 жыл бұрын
+Summa yes, absolutely! you can even grow them on the windowsill, they are easy to grow. if you want to put them outside, don't do it too early, they don't like the cold. I don't put mine out before middle of may, sometimes later depending on temperatures. putting them in front of a wall also helps because the warmth reflects off of it.

I thought the comments about Jamie not being able to keep his mouth shut were probably exaggerating, but they really weren't... Just a tip, people generally don't like it when you start a sentence in the middle of theirs. There was a guy that did that a lot at my old job and nobody could stand him. In regards to the tomatoes, that's a really cool setup with all of that variety. I just wish I could actually palate raw tomatoes. I immediately gag any time I try, they have to be dried or cooked with plenty of garlic and basil for me to eat them.

Are tomatoes fruits or vegetables? The answer is yes. The idea that tomatoes are not vegetables is a myth. As the Oxford Dictionary rightly points out, tomatoes are botanically a fruit, but cullinarily vegetables, as they are generally used in sovoury cooking (check it out for a more in depth explanation). The problems is mixing up the different definitions of both "fruit" and "vegetable".
