That's a foregone conclusion regardless of what happens with any Continuing Resolution. The market WILL crash bigly, Trump WILL impose stupid extreme tariffs that start trade wars with our allies and make them more volatile with our current enemies, he will destroy the labor market by deporting our skilled but inexpensive "illegal" immigrants and millions of Americans will lose their jobs when we the "consumers" don't have the money to be able to buy anything that isn't a "basic necessity" like food and businesses start laying off and or closing down altogether for lack of profits, he'll start a real estate crash as laid off workers can't pay their mortgages and foreclosures kick in. Trump won't impose a moratorium on foreclosures, we can be sure of that! This isn't rocket science. All of these things will be direct and foreseeable consequences of Trump's promised policies that he says he intends to inflict upon the American people. Then the billionaires will sweep in and suck up everything for pennies on the dollar. Wait for it, it's coming.

How far you want to take the prep is up to you (gardens and chickens and tarriffs, oh my!), but if you have any electronics or appliances -- phones, for example -- that you had planned on replacing in the next year, now might be a good time to look into that. As for food, I am a gardener, and while most of my gardening would be described as ornamental, I definitely plan on increasing the number of edible fruits and veggies in my landscape this year. This is a win-win, because even if food prices don't skyrocket my family will still be able to use what I've grown. This is the sort of realistic preparedness I think we should embrace if we can.

The debt ceiling is even weirder than that analogy makes it sound if you look at it from a legal/legislative perspective rather than a partisan one. Congress passes taxation laws that basically determine how much revenue comes in. Congress also passes spending bills that determine how much needs to be spent. Then they pass separate legislation on how much can be borrowed, but you already know how much has to be borrowed after the first two. The domestic equivalent would be having $10k, deciding to buy a $30k car and only borrow up to $10k to do it. It makes no sense.

He's right on the what, but wildly self-serving on the why. Dumping the ceiling makes sense. If Congress passes spending, then they should pay for it, axiomatically. Trump is merely trying to avoid the optics of a debt ceiling vote when the debt inevitably goes up.

I thought the debt limit should be eliminated until now, because trump and his cronies could immediately use the absence of a debt limit to direct the nation’s wealth into their own pockets.

Math, economics, science, medicine, don't have a liberal bias. Conservatives just have a bias about accepting truth, especially when it goes against what their betters tell them to believe. Your betters only ever want wants best only for themselves hon, the rest of us want what's better for us all, even you.

I have to concede: Getting rid of the debt ceiling is the best idea I've seen from Trump.
@markphilips6298Күн бұрын
I think it all boils down to an approach that each party seems to have adopted over the years. The Republicans accuse Democrats of being "tax and spend* liberals, hence, Democratic administrations have a tendency to flatline as far as the debt ceiling is concerned. The Republican approach seems to be borrow and spend so they can avoid being accused of raising taxes. However, the borrow and spend approach does raise our debt ceiling exponentially!
@jeffmacdonald9863Күн бұрын
I don't think that's really true though. Dems haven't really done much to raise taxes and they haven't cut spending. At least not in recent terms. Republicans cut taxes for the rich, which drives up debt and spend wastefully which does the same (Think Bush starting wars.) Dems spend as well, but their spending tends to drive economic growth, largely paying for itself the way Republicans pretend their tax cuts will. Both still need to raise the debt ceiling, since it's in absolute dollars, not in percentage of GDP, but the GOP much more so. Recessions are expensive.

And the Government debt is issuing Bonds to raise the money. The wealthy buy those bonds, lending the government money, knowing that the interest is high and very safe. The wealthy get even wealthier. The lower and middle classes get taxed so the government can pay those interest payments.

For any Canadian 🇨🇦 viewers out there, Canada's fall economic update just tabled in our HoC states that the Debt to GDP ratio for this fiscal year is 41.9% and it's projected to shrink to 38.6% by 2029. You might be worried about Canada's debt load, but the Americans would be happier than a pig in sh*t to have our fiscal situation over theirs. Just sayin'
