Great episode! Webtoons has a crazy amount of content and I knew it would be only a matter of time before platforms like this begin to blow. As a future episode, I would love to see something on co-productions, how they work, why some networks look to do a project as a copro, the financial side, and all the positives and negatives.

Since i started working in webtoon company it's already been a 6 months. What i understood is webtoon is not a culture, it's a pure business. Anime and manga is kinda different. They make it because they love it. They want to give a meaning to people through anime and manga. Webtoon industry might not be like that. They just hire people by money and then create some entertaining and well looking visuals. And people'll pay for the next episode. That's it.

I agree. I also think that the different paths one might take to get a manga published versus uploading a webcomic may contribute to it, if that makes any sense.

One thing I wonder about is how to find out where things are being made when they are earlier in development? I work as a storyboard artist at WB, I asked a lot of peers at different and NO ONE seemed to know where Lore Olympus was being made?
@SurvivingAnimation
@SurvivingAnimation 4 жыл бұрын
That's a great question and a pretty difficult one to answer. I would say the majority of the series that are in development or are in production, but not announced, have a variety of reasons to remain confidential. So, unless you're connected with the development or producing community, it's hard to know who is making what. To be honest, I haven't heard any information about how or where Lore Olympus has been produced either!

For someone who is interested in pitching for animation, do you think that Webtoon might be a good place to create a proof of concept? I'm sure that showing the network an audience already engaged is a great thing, but I also imagine that giving away the ending in the comic might not be a great thing. How I'd find the time to make a comic when I already work full-time as an layout artist, and need to get exercise into my life more, I don't know but I'd certainly try!

I think it's a great place to create a proof of concept. But as a lover of comics, I would say to truly respect the medium. Do it this way if you think it would be a great comic. Don't do it if you're just using it as a stepping stone.

@@SurvivingAnimation Thanks! You're right that there are people out there who like comics more than any other medium. I'll be sure to give it the respect it deserves and in fact, there are parts of my idea that work best in a comic.

@@SurvivingAnimation what would be the next step after having your comic/manga on webtoon? would you use the success of your project as a selling point? how would the process go? (considering the webtoon is successful)

Hello Eric, I really appreciate you doing these videos. I am struggling right now getting a super amazing funny project into the next stage. I have written the bible, I have 39 episodes flushed out with the first 6 completed and ready, I have characters developed in 2D and I can't find anyone to help with a Leica reel to bring to any possible meeting. Do production companies ever greenlight from this stage? Are there situations where they get involved but don't ask for total control? Thanks for your time. All the best!!
@SurvivingAnimation

Hey there and thanks for watching! Basically, production companies usually never have greenlight power. That lies in the hands of broadcasters, streamers, distributors, and financiers. Production studios only fulfill the orders they are paid to produce. I hope that helps!

@@SurvivingAnimation Thanks Eric for the reply. I guess I should also ask whether or not the broadcasters, streamers, distributors or financiers ever greenlight projects from this stage or do they need that Leica reel? Thanks again. Happy holidays!!

@@donmasters9601 I would check out two videos on my channel for more information. The 1st is 'What's in a pitch bible' and the 2nd is 'Why a pitch bible is not enough.' I think both of those will help you. But the short answer is unfortunately, you probably have too much of what they don't need and not enough of what they want to see.

Hello Eric, Thanks for the informative channel. I have been approached by an anmation company, to make a 10 part animated TV show of my I.P.. They have agreed to finance the show. This is all new to me...I was wondering . What percentage of the I.P can I retain to my self? They have told me I will hold 1% to 3 % of the I.P as a first time creator, whilst they will own the rest. Is this figure correct? Apologies fo rmy ignorance...but I am not too clued about these issues.

Hey there and thanks for watching! Unfortunately, I can't answer such a specific question without either knowing a lot more about the IP, the animation production company, their prominence in the field, and your experience as an IP generator or established animation talent. In general, a company willing to fully finance an animation production (which is usually a broadcaster or distributor) will demand in return full control of the IP. The total value given back to you will be a suite of payments (passive and active) which you could roughly categorize into 'royalties' and 'duties.' If you'd like to have a more detailed professional consultation, please reach out to me via LinkedIN or my website and we can continue this conversation. My rates are hourly. I hope that helps you!
