Quilts have a long history of protest and social commentary. Erin Bauchan has embarked on a year long gun violence awareness project by sewing a block a day to represent deaths and injuries due to mass shootings. What started out as a way of voicing her concerns now has a reach beyond her quilting friends and family.

This is not at all about politics. This is about a very serious crisis. In fact what we’re talking about is something very similar to what happened when quilters made a huge quilt to bring attention to the aids crisis which in the 80s wasn’t being addressed at all. Politics is not like a religion or choice of what your favorite color is. Politics has been perverted to make us think that we should just choose sides and not think about whatever the issue is. In my opinion, what these two women are doing is incredibly brave and meaningful, just lobbing criticsm because you don’t want anything to change is sad. I think what Karen is doing is really useful and I really appreciate her broadening my horizons. I want to find out more about how we can make a difference through our quilting. Just don’t watch this channel anymore, or take it as it is. It’s Karen’s channel.

Karen, thank you for this interview with Erin. Her project is so important. I hope her quilt gains national interest in the same way that the AIDS quilt did and still does. And I’m so glad you asked her how she cares for her own mental health while working on this project. Thank you for bringing this important quilt project to our attention.

Great quilt and what a meaningful journey you are on. I think it is important remember that there are many viewers not from the US who have different life experiences with this issue. Quilts and activism go hand in hand ( whether you agree or disagree)

At first I thought this was a case of trivialising an important issue like gun violence but when I thought about it a bit more as being a piece of art representing a societal issue I changed my mind. I even think the groups name, seam ripper, is indicative of what she is doing. Dismantling, taking apart what is wrong and representing it in a different way. Reading the comments I see the usual excuses about people killing people and guns not killing people and mental illness. If we don’t start thinking differently about these issues then nothing will change. I will say she is a brave woman.

Very interesting lady to listen to, the thought of guns is very disturbing, but the people who use them in a violent matter is the most disturbing. Mental illness and of course our drug/ criminal issues all have to be addressed. Thanks for sharing another interesting interview. 👍❤️🙂

Violence is more prevant in society. Many factors including mental health crisis, substance abuse and availability of weapons. Not an easy thing to take care of. I dont think it is a right to own a weapon. It is a right to feel safe. I do not feel safe traveling in certain areas. There are places not to go. Having weapons available increase the incidence of there use in conflicts. Difficult challenging subject. Being at the Houston Quilt Festival and seeing the sign No guns weapons allowed in the conference hall didturbed be greatly. A designer using the fact that her pattern had a place for your hand gun. These two things blew my mind. Why would you ever expect for your fellow quilter to need a gun at a quilt show? Or at a guild meeting? Or whatever place you are going in your daily life. That is not the life I want with for my children, grandchildren or loved ones to be in. And it is not just in the US but happen in other countries. Tough tough subject.

Wow. Kudos to Erin to tackle such a project. It comes at a timely moment for me. I have an acquaintance who was just killed in an act of gun violence on 5/26. He was the cousin of some of my cousins on the other side of their family. Killed by someone over a property dispute. We have such a problem in this country and the more we can bring awareness to it, the more we can begin to engage the problem. Thank you, Erin and Karen.

Interesting initiative, but gruesome too. It shows that 'the greatest country in the world' is not a safe place for everyone. Perhaps another way of indicating the horror is to use a red stripe for an adult, and a pastel stripe for a child. That way it would make it even clearer what the effects are of everyone 's entitlement to guns at home. I live in the Netherlands, in Europe, and we also have violence here. Since covid young people seem to have become more aggressive and out of control, so that they settle their arguments with knives and guns. However, the mass shootings that are apparently the order of the day in the US are extremely rare here, as gun ownership is not something that is looked upon favourably here. School shootings are almost unheard of here. The situation in the US is probably also exacerbated by the way politicians behave and try to get people to vote for them. If only people would invest the money for guns and bullets into education and putting an end to poverty and inequality.

What about being aware of the violent behavior/mental illness that is called gun violence? The gun is an object a violent person uses, like baseball bats, knives, automobiles, frozen water bottles, rocks and bricks.

I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts and stories when I quilt. At times I just have to turn it off - sometimes it's just too much. I'm curious how broad the tally mark is - is it the state of MI, or just random incidents she hears about, etc from all over the US? Maybe you will cover it. I'm only at 11:34 so it's possible you ask. I truly believe the biggest problem in the world at large is a general lack of value of human life - starting with pregnant woman. It's all related, IMO.

Guns don't shoot people. People shoot people. We should be talking about mental health crises. I might think about a quilt like that. Ot trying to be controversial but until we heal people, not much chance of violence stopping. I don't own guns, not a gun rights advocate here. Just a realist. Every time i hear of gun violence i am so sad ... for families of the victims but also for family of perpetrator. Mental health help is so often hard to get where I live.

I think it is a straw man fallacy to assume that people who are anti gun control are pro-gun violence. (implied at the end of the interview by Erin) I can't imagine any of them being pro gun-violence - at least none of the hunters in my family are - quite the opposite. I still believe it is our problems of mass shootings are a result of the breakdown of the family, low estimation of the value of life and, of course, no fear of God and not necessarily in that order.

Anti-gun control? Every place in the US has some degree of gun control and you want to abolish it? You’d support violent felons or individuals on the FBI terrorist watchlist owning guns? You’re okay with American gun manufacturers engaging in free trade with foreign cartels and paramilitaries? Should we be able take guns on planes? Freely print ghost guns? I’m concerned about the integrity of someone if their conscience tells them that they can elect for such things but still keep their hands clean. The majority of people would consider your perspective fringe radicalism, the NRA wouldn’t even support that stance.
