Core web vitals update decimated my organic traffic. To the naked eye, it is lighting and there is no CLS. I paid a developer to fix it - he made it all green on page speed insights but it was actually unusable. These metrix are not accurate compared to real world 'naked eye' usability in my opinion.

That makes no sense. CWV didn't decimate your organic traffic, something else did. When your pages and site were built, standards weren't followed. Most of CWV starts with following best practices, to begin with, and many of these standards have been in place for years. Sure it can be a complicated mess, but to say it decimated your organic traffic is placing the blame in the wrong place. Google has stated that they are not penalizing sites for CWV. Focus on your user and provide an incredible experience. Provide content that is the best available. Give your users a reason to stay on your sire and a reason to return. If your users are converting and everything is going well regardless of CWV, Google will reward the site with ranking. Google priority is giving searchers what they want, not satisfying KPI's

Thanks for your comments, all good points which I will look into... All i'd say is my site's organic traffic was growing well month on month and then in May it literally went off a cliff. Competitors traffic is all stable / growing. My stock was the same, I didn't change anything so this is what lead me to believe the only explanation was cwv becoming a ranking factor in May. To be fair it's taught me not to put all my eggs in the google search basket, something I was definitely guilty of.

@@stuartloach2179 We also saw a drop in traffic on some of our site in may with no changes on them, and CWV were good enough. Not perfect, but good. Then, we relaunched the site with worse CWV and the traffic got stable... CWV update came with other updates.. if your CWV were good, I'd look at other stuff.
