ive been whittling for little over 60 years, although i never go anywhere without my knife roll full of my whittling knives, (so much so that the young folks in my little town know me as "mr. whittler"), i use a few of these rough riders when im out with the grandkids, the quill one looks like a folding version of some of my regular knives, aint a day goes by that im not fiddling with a bit of wood on a bench around town, one time i was sitting on a bench next to a kindergarten playground, and the little kids kept gathering at the fence near me watching me carve away, so i made them all little toys, im always happiest when i see someone smile from my craft, teachers dont mind because most teachers there remember watching me whittle when they were kids

As to your comment on the handle shape on the wharncliffe, it is a pattern designed to work in both the hammer grip as well as the edge-in paring grip. It's never going to be ideal in the hammer grip -- that's the compromise you'll need to accept -- but it still should be pretty good in both.

I like the look of both of these quite a bit. I wonder if the small blades on the second knife are light on spring pressure out of necessity to keep the main blade from being a nail ripper since it has twice the amount of backsping acting on it. I’m guessing that’s why knives of that three blade configuration traditionally use a split spring design (like a Split Back Whittler pattern) to keep only one spring on each blade tang. This is just a guess.
@BigRedEDC2 жыл бұрын
That is a very good possibility Paul! Appreciate you sharing your thoughts!

The Quil Cliff is a nice one, the handle shape reminds me of the spanish navaja knives, which also taper to the end. It's a matter of getting used to i guess. The whittler surprised me of having weak springs on the small blades, ofcourse the main blade runs on two springs, so that will be a solid one, but they could have been a bit stronger on the smaller ones. Shape wise i like both. Thank you JB.

Excellent video my friend. Two good offerings from Rough Ryder. I actually think I'd like the quill cliff better because it's one blade and I enjoyed the English whittler that I had in a while back from Ben which is that same shape. Not a big fan of the other one because of the multiple blades and the light springs and having three of the same blade shape. But that's just me. Thanks

I bought an LTWRIGHT Bandit from SMKW and they threw in a pretty big Rough Ryder for free. The knife opened nice, but the blade lock release to close the knife is too stiff for arthritic hands. Opening folders can be difficult and is part of the reason I'm carrying a small fixed blade now.

No history on the quill pattern but am going to guess the handle shape feels weird because of where the front swell ends. You are stable at the fore of the handle but have very little to grab onto in the middle. A small bit of stabilization arrives again at the pinky, but not really enough to grab onto; it's mostly there just to 'steer' the tip of the blade. The pattern seems to aid in fine control. Just guessing. 😜 I like both of these knives.

Very sharp, exceptionally fine point, elegant looking, and very well finished; what's not to like?
