Thanks for sharing your experience. I've learned a good bit from you, and I appreciate it, Im 53 and been welding in some form or fashion all my life. I still love to listen to older hands, or just someone elses idea anytime. God bless you brother.

Thanks! I pay for my own rods and since I'm cheap I burn them down pretty far, but I think I'll take your advice and only burn to an inch before the numbers. Keep up the great tips and stories!

you can burn your rods shorter if your amperage is not excessive. To gain speed in pipe welding you need to run as high an amperage as your skill level will allow, and still make a quality weld. His point was that the rod will handle the higher heat ranges for a while , but the longer you weld in those higher heat ranges the hotter the rod and the flux get, until you actually see the flux catch fire . at a certain point the excess heat causes the flux to start breaking down and be unable to do its job properly. So the answer to welding with high amps for speed and make quality welds , is to not burn them so short. GET A FRESH HORSE LIKE THE PONY EXPRESS RIDERS , AND DONT PUT YOUR RELAY STATIONS TOO FAR APART !! THANK YOU JOHN !

This is been pretty true knowledge. Any tips on finding to the good welding rod? Seems like i cant stay in a good batch of welding rod for very long. I was on a heavy wall job burning over a box a day with my welding partner. We could tell which store the rod came from by how loud the arc got and fire. All the same rod

Age old problem, one can of rods to the other. Cellulose ( downhill ) rods , unlike the fast freeze rods like 7018 , require some moisture to weld properly. The standard is that they should not be stored in temperatures above 100 degrees . Are they? All the time! They will be stacked up like cord wood in a conex building during the summer. That steel building can get much hotter than 100 degrees inside. Also depends on how old the rods are along with how their stored. Lincoln has a riddle for a code on the cans ,that reveals their date of manufacture.there will be a serial number on the can about 11 letter and digit combo. We just need to concern ourselves with the first 6 letter and digits. U 1 14 10 U- country manufactured in 1- the code for the plant that made them 14- the year made 10- the month made So in this example , the rods were made in October of 2014 in the USA Rods are suppose to be good for 2-3 years as long as 5 yrs depending on how they were stored etc. CHECK THE DATES ON THE CANS AND USE THE ONES THAT ARE OF THE NEWEST MANUFACTURE. Some times contractors will buy rods that are older because they get them for a reduced price from the suppliers, and because most people and inspectors don’t know either. Hyp rods were and may still be notorious for finger nailing as any rod that is older and has dried out may be. Welders would have their helpers pull each rod through a damp rag to add some moister back into them before they used them, suppose to help them weld better?? Thank you Berry!

I appreciate the info. Most of the time the welding rod we get we date check. they still weld a lot of hyp+ up here where I'm at. It's getting phased out more often. So funny when a welder starts off for the first time on it. Leather and ear plugs come out.
