Let's talk wheelchair cushions // Geo-Matrix Hybrid review

When you spend your life in a wheelchair, what you sit on is a big deal!
There are so many options out there for wheelchair cushions, and it can be confusing, so I'm weighing in on what I look for in a cushion and the kinds of cushions I've used over the years.
My current cushion, a Geo-Matrix Hybrid, is my favorite, so I did a full review on it!

@@westiepower2020 there is no reason that layers of foam and gel with a cover should cost $500+. These same materials are used in other industries and have a fraction of the cost. Exploitation of people that need these items.

Thanks for this! I’m getting a Geo-Matrix on my new chair and I wasn’t sure whether it was a good option or not since I currently have a ROHO. This put me way at ease, so I really appreciate it!!

I´m only on my secon cushion in my chair, a powerchair at that, but I have a StimuLite by SUPRACOR INC and are most pleased, the first vas a foam cushion that wasn´t up to the job to put it mildly! I´ve only been wheeling for slightly over a yeat and have all my issues with the periferal nervasystem, loss of muscle control and strength, dulled sensory capability and such... It took me about 6 months to realise that it was the cushion that was at fault, but living in sweden has its perks so it was just to give the fysiotherapist a call and she got me a brand spanking new one within two weeks, for free! 😎 Allways nice to hear others speak of their experiences with their accesories and kit, feels sort of stupid to have to learn some of the things others have allready tried and tested! @@EmpoweredPara It has it´s share of issues, but generally I´d say it´s pretty awesome! I was born type 1 diabetic, and insuling and all things related is free! My powerwheelchair is for free and since I´m leagally blind, even my glasses are for free! We might have high taxes on our income, but damn you get it back if something goes awry!

I can't thank you enough; I didn't even understand the name of the bones that are causing additional pain when sitting but I knew one source was/is my tail bone with not fat.

I didn't either until just recently lol. I knew which bones stuck out but didn't know the names. Definitely have to watch the three bones that can get sharp with no fat on your butt!

I love my Supracor Stimulite XS it is all honeycomb but soft where needed and firmer in other areas to provide stability. Easy to clean since it is full of honeycombs, especially after an "accident".

This was super informative! I use a Supracore stimulite classic xs and I find the honeycomb structure super comfortable. It has a very sturdy but soft, pressure relieving structure and ventilation is amazing it is also very low maintenance.

Super helpful! The biggest problem with deciding what cushion to buy is that any length of a demo isn’t enough to know for sure what you need/want. I’m in a roho now because that’s what the people at the hospital said I need. But I really want to try something more stable. I might see if I can get my hands on a Geo Matrix hybrid. 🤔

Yeah so true. We can never demo long enough to get a good feel for a cushion. I love the stability of gel/foam cushions

Great info Brittany!! Thank you. The Java Ride cushion is durable and superb for pressure relief. Never had a pressure sore. Comes in custom fit sizes.

I put a puppy training pad between the cushion and the cover. I have the ROHO Mosaic (junk) and the ROHO Nexus Spirit. I like the Nexus Spirit...BUT as a hip amputee, I need a cushion built up on the side where my hip used to be (the right side) ...so I'm probably either going to end up with a custom cushion (quick, send LOTS of $$$ 😂) or a ROHO Quadrant with the left side deflated and the right side inflated (still send $$$ 🤣).

Thank you, you have helped me a lot, I have been using a gel cushion for years and it is true in cold temperatures it seems like a stone, just a few days ago I was reviewing some options to avoid stiffness while still having gel on top, I will review your links, thanks again 👌✌️😅

I've been a paraplegic for 40 years and have tried a lot of different cushions. I always go back to a low profile ROHO, which works the best for me to prevent pressure sores.

I have a Jay Comfort curve its very basic, not super comfortable but many times more so than a car seat is. I sat on a vatilite with the PSV valve and thought was neat, not sure about local price of $380 US, I have a boney butt, it was very adjustable but I question how durable it is in the long run? I like not to feel the vibration as I'm rolling. I need to buy tires and tubes and dump the solid tires though. Have to see who has similar cushions here. It gets upto 121 degrees in Arizona during the summer, so a sweaty bottom isn't much fun. Do you know if Blake medical ships to the US, they should. Both the US and Canada are North America!

I have used the super core slimline cushion for the past five years, absolutely love 9:59 it 😍 I replace them every 22 months, before I started using these I used plain foam cushion that caused me terrible pain in the back of my thighs

Thanks for this video. I’m glad I’m retired so I can watch right away. I’ve always wondered about cushions because I just always assumed that the cushion was part of the chair - silly me! The Matrix Hybrid honeycomb layer is really cool and I can see why it would provide a combination of support and protection from pressure sores. And good protection from urine. I assume that the cost varies by size, but can you give a rough price range?

Are there cushions that take pressure off the coccyx (tailbone)? I have EDS (hypermobility) and dislocated my coccyx a couple of years ago (yes not bruised or fractured like typical tailbone injuries, but dislocated). It’s still not back in the right place. When working from home I use a office chair cushion that has a U cut out where the tailbone would hit. Thanks so much for all your content and the time you take making the downloadable resources.

Im recently paraplegic since Aug 2022 and Im using a Jay3 and i love it so far. Keep my legs together and has roho in the butt area. I really like it compared to the full roho cushions.

Mine is a Roho cushion i find it comfortable i have had rotation flap skin graft on my left butt cheek . I was in hospital for 8 weeks after surgery.

Bob, If you've watched some of Brittney's latest videos and even her live stream with Joe last Sunday, you might remember that she has mentioned the number of times she says the word "like" and that she is self-conscious about it. Personally, I'm just really happy that she's willing to step out of her comfort zone (which is the reason she uses the word "like" so much in her videos) and share so much of her personal life to educate and help others.

I do know I say like lol. I said it so much in this video that I even annoyed myself when I was editing it haha. But done is better than perfect ! As for your question, a good cushion is more about preventing pressure sores than comfort. But comfort does come into play for those that still have some sensation.

I am writing to you from the EU, Spain Mediterranean coast (Alicante) this summer we reached 125.6°F it was impossible to go outside, a few days ago we were at 71,6°F and today at 23°F the tires melt in summer With the asphalt and in winter the cushion is a stone, two seasons have disappeared, there are sudden summer/winter changes, I suppose that in Canada climate change will not be so evident, take care of yourselves

That sounds kinda terrible! We have a long winter but very distinct 4 seasons. Summer is usually temperate but beautiful. Never so hot that it's uncomfortable
