@@M.B.Enclosures yes for sure. I've got 4 fosgate 15's in a 54 cadillac that I built a box to take up the whole trunk "huge" it does aight. It could be a lot better I'll be swapping it out. I'm thinking about a 4th order to cut down some of the rattling.

@@M.B.Enclosures Hey MBE, how much larger than the manufacturer recommendation do you recommend a box to be built? Like, if Skar says its vxf 15 needs 3.25 cubes, would you reccomend 3.5, or 3.75, etc...? And how big of a role does tuning play in box volume? I want to tune my vxf to 28hz so should a lower tuned box be built with slightly more volume than if it was tuned to, say, 33hz?

I was always under the impression that you could undersize a box in a sealed enclosure application, but not ported. Very interesting about the size of the box relationship to the air around the voice coil and it’s effect on cooling. I hadn’t thought about that.

If you go small on the sealed box your moving your optimum sweet hz range drastically to the upper hz. For ex. a sub needs 1.5 cu ft sealed and it’ll give great output from 35hz -80hz well same sub in 1cu ft will shift that great output to 60hz-150hz. And if you go bigger on the sealed it’s the opposite the optimum hz range will go to the lower hz. Every sub is different and the numbers above is just for example and explanation. No 2 brands of subs will use the same size enclosure because once in the vehicle the optimum hz range will change also.

YEP..A SUB JUST DONT PERFORM IN A GROSSLY LARG ARE TOO SMALL BOX point and case...I bought 4 audiopipe bdc415 D2 But I never got the 16.cf custom box that was called for but I had two prefab boxes that was 2.5 cubs per sub so that's like 12 cu.f about 5cuf short of16 that didn't perform they best and they failed early

A neighbor of mine bought 2 L7 15's in a qbomb vented enclosure for his 2019 challenger. I measured it out and I think it is like 3 cu ft total or something like that. I told him before he bought it that that enclosure isn't even big enough for 1 of them. A while back he asked me about doing the install but hasn't been by yet. I told him it's probably gonna sound like crap.

Hey man you have a solid point what you just said i been a seal man ever since never had a ported box i couldn't understand the tuning concept just being in car audio at time. I have experience a lot of stuff including errors too dealing with car audio, but I learn from my mistake tho without doing the right researching, the specs, and building boxes. When I got the right knowledge, everything starting to make sense after that from installing to building boxes. Correct knowledge will have your car sounding good frfr

Not for everyone, but if you want a box that's a small or smaller than a sealed enclosure, that still gets low, then you need a passive radiator. Possibly 2. That's why companies like JBL uses PRs in their Bluetooth speakers. They need their product to be small as possible, and play low enough to sell like hot cakes.

Good info. Some of the bad info comes from the shops selling the product. It starts with somebody telling you that will fit. I’ve seen a single sub in a correct box outperform two of the same subs in a wrong box.

I have a standard cab truck I built a slim vented box for behind the seat with two 8-in Rockford p2s I have about 1.1 ft inside without the port included they require .65 each vented and the port that runs almost the length of the box is 2 in x 5 in by 24 in Long completely flared it's a really nice strong build now you make me nervous it may be too small but when I do a frequency sweep it is so loud and low between 28 HZ and 80hz..... I built the Box myself and I was always a little nervous about it being too small but the thing is it's slams and plays hard but it doesn't play the highs very well it does roll off after 120 hertz but gets jiggy with the lows

I like MB because he is honest. He made me an enclosure for Sundown ZV6 10". Beautiful work, the cut out was wrong about 1/8" though. We talked and he made it right. In this game mistake will happend but how the person takes responsibility for that mistake is what separates real business owners from scammers that just take your money and run. when you get a box from MB you also get a guarantee that if anything goes wrong, he will take care of it. Passive radiators are actually pretty cool in how they can produce sound without being directly powered. Recently acquired my dads JBL L150A tower speakers with one 12 mid and one 12 passive radiator. Im still tryna understand the physics how it produces lower bass notes

So the passive radiator has small weights on the back instead of a magnet, and this weight of the radiator determines the resonance frequency just like port length port area and net volume determine the resonance of a ported enclosure. So if you have a fs of 34hz on the radiator, when your subwoofer is producing frequencies around that it will boost those frequencies

Just seen this video. I have a 2012 chevy traverse and with my 3rd row down, yes it's 48 across but it's like 36+ deep and 20 high. Not sure if that guy measured from 2nd row to lift gate but I measured mine from 3rd row folded down to the bump out before the tool compartment just before the lift gate.

Enclosure size is important. I had a 12 Rockford P1 150w rms the 1st gen. Built in a large enclosure with a big port. People could not believe the performance from one 12. Regards from South Africa

I noticed talking to some of the guys on FaceBook who think the same way. I tell them this, "you have to do your full research on your car first of what will fit and what won't. Adding any large subwoofers to your car, you must do your calculations to find out your gross cubic feet BEFORE buying any subwoofers! some listen and some don't.

Very rarely are the loudest people built with manufacture recommendations. I got 4 15s in 11 cubes and am 160s from 28-55hz. Yes I have a lot of power but I demo just fine.

I built a box 4 a american bass xmaxx 15 in 3.5 cubic ft.that son of gun sounded good man. I called several people before i built the box and they told me its not critical with a large motored subwoofer,bc the motor force.and we also had the aero port talk that a 6” aeroport is a tiny azz port. So im not a critic on box size now bc a smaller box will perform too.i wouldnt go a cube or cube in half smaller,nor would i go a cube or 2 bigger like some people do(which keeps the coil out of the gap when you hammer down on it(hence stinky subs)be conservative above and below recommended.🤷🏻‍♂️its not rocket science just making noise.

What example of setup would you recommend for my Dodge Charger trunk? I got one 15” vxf in a enclosure tuned to 32hz. The sub is facing up and the ported area on the side. But idk if I should get another setup and sell this one. The bass moves things around but it’s not thumpy enough to hit my chest ect… it’s just lows and rattling lol. I’m over it.

i have 2 12" alpine type r in 3.6cu ft, tuned 35hz on an RF T1000bdcp but didnt give myself enough port area (im using a single 4" aero port with flanged ends), its my first box build. Im trying to decide if I should double up on the ports (obviously with more length since more area) and see how it sounds or switch to 2 10"s and design for that since my box volume is on the lower side for 12s. if 2x 4" aero still has port noise i dont know if theres a way id be able to fit more port area without removing too much box volume.

Never have I read lean beyond the smaller measurements. But I think the problem is a lot of installers can't or don't apply proper measurements for the enclosure

I've got some hertz ml 2500.3 with a recommended. 88 sealed box for each, they say the box fs would be around 42hz, of course all of them in my vehicle will affect the fs but i would like to see i can't put them in a bigger sealed box in hopes of being able to play lower?

@@1012taz my speculation would be 11 cu ft area subs take 4.25 ea x 2 + .25 cu ft displacement per sub x2 + 2 cu ft port displacement = 11cu ft will put you in the ball park no smaller though.

@@M.B.Enclosures I build a lot of enclosures down my way and first thing I tell them is I only build to specs if it can’t build to specs catch me on the next box. I also tell EVERYBODY…. there’s a fine line between I can make it fit and actually sounding like it should, just cause the speaker play music doesn’t mean it’s playing properly and to it’s full potential. I tired to pass info on to who I build for it does no good for me to take what I learned and know to the grave. Lastly I tell EVERYBODY all subs are rated different some get there rms rating free air, some in a box but what kind of box, some rate the subs at a specific rms. I don’t know how to read T/S like you but I can eye ball a sub and tell if the rms is short burst or really continuous. Keep pushin what you do and I’m a keep following!!!!!!!!

The port will take up roughly 3 cubes. He would need a gross of 12 cubes. Just ballpark numbers but it’s in this area.

With the dimensions you stated 40x24x20 you have a net of 11+ cuft. X series only need 4 cubes. W 3cube port & displacement of wood & subs it may not be optimal but still plenty to sound amazing with room to grow if they dont decide to get more subs. After 2 subs in a slightly restricted box....they gonna want to upgrade and expand most likely to more or larger subs which they would be willing to find more area or get a larger vehicle to accomodate this upgrade. They will be impressed sooo much with what you have already provided and will be crawling back for you to do the next larger enclosure as well...guaranteed! They will not miss that extra cube of free air. I know this from my personal experiences with sundown products my guy.
