Let's tidy up these locs! Dreadlock wash and maintenance on Caucasian hair

Contractors and landscapers have a hard time keeping their dreads clean and tidy so this is the process I take to deep wash them and get them back to their beautiful homeostasis.
I personally created these dreadlocks almost 10 years ago in my early years as a loctician and this is pretty typical of the style of locs that I create on resistant or smoother hair textures. By that I mean that the dreads are not created by just twisting the hair. They are also NOT created with extreme force, styling or locking products or any interlocking. My method for creating dreads is very soft and simple, allowing the hair to lock up organically. The proof is in the pudding, baby! I can do this with all hair types if you have the patience and dedication to follow my method.

He does wash in his own. You can see, in the video, that there are some spots that need more work with scrubbing and that's not something he has the energy to do so he likes to have me do it for him. These are definitely not free form. He has gotten maintenance on average for every 2-3 months for almost 10 years now.

What is the best way to clean a scalp with dreadlocks ? I’ve had mine for a month now and my scalp had little red bumps and itches
@briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy
@briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy Жыл бұрын
Typically, those bumps are a sign that it's too tight but depending on your skin (dry or oily) you can use Sea Breeze one time to make it chill out. I also make a spray (half witch Hazel and half distilled water with drops of tea tree oil, rosemary and peppermint) and then spray when it's too itchy. But not every day. Those kinds of astringents will dry you out if you use too often. I moisturize my scalp after washing. I only do that after washing. Then I treat with these things like 2 weeks later. I wash once a month but I have dry scalp and have had locs for over 10 years so it's used to it. Some people have to wash every week or two and some have to wait a few months for their scalp to catch up. There's also a spray called Rosemary something something by influence. It's amazing and helps treat the scalp but I think you only use that before washing. I'm not 100% on that

Is it possible to crochet your own roots, like at the back of the head? I want dreads and to get them done but when it comes to maintenance, I move a lot so I will most likely be crocheting them myself
@briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy
@briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy Жыл бұрын
I tell people to Deborah Crochet selves. I don't even care because it's so easy to pull hair straight out from your root if you come it wrong. The room for error is so large. That doesn't mean that you can't do it, you just have to do it properly.

Orrr... you can travel and let someone put them back together for you. Getting a good at home routine would help a lot after that but I understand it's hard when you're going through stuff. Self care really is where we need to turn in those times tho. Loving yourself and doing the basic care things are sometimes huge accomplishments on bad days. Good luck friend. Someone destroyed the top, twisting and crocheting my new ones from breaks into my older ones and the top is much thicker now than the bottom. I’m heartbroken. Sometimes, if my clients are going to go a while without maintenance or if they're going to get in the water a lot, I will band their dreads in a very specific spot to hold the loose hairs in after their maintenance visit. It helps the work last longer. Only recommended for people who know exactly where to put the bands.

How thin is too thin for a loc? I'm an old lady with health issues and not a lot of hair to work with. No bald spots, but very thin all over.
@briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy
@briana_coolbreeze_gahipsy Жыл бұрын
It just depends on how it's done. A light twist and light crochet will be best. If you crochet or back comb thin hair too much, you get something that's too hard to accept new growth. They'll look like dingleberries, basically. Your loctitian really needs to understand that and be gentle with your hair. Also, if your health issue cause you to be in a bed a lot, that could cause a lot of matting and difficulty keeping them separated to remember to think about your lifestyle and if you'll be able to keep up with washing them every 2-4 weeks and getting maintenance every month.
