Bless you. I had my first major depressive episode the summer between 7th-8th grade. I sat in the dark the entire summer and every part of me suffered. The judgement I felt going to the shop to get it detangled was painful for anyone, let alone a kid. I have severe depression and have times still where I have to spend a few hours detangling and just putting myself back together. It’s painful, and so many times I see women saying “just suck it up” or “the last thing I’d let go is my hygiene”. No one knows until they go thru it and that’s all there is to it. You didn’t ask for all of that but I needed to share. You are a blessing for taking the time to help someone reach a step towards healing. Wishing both of you nothing but the best.

Exactly. Your perspective completely changes when you're the one stuck there. I didn't expect to be unable to care for myself either, and I felt ashamed. Not just because others felt they needed to share their input, but because I had so little empathy for others who struggled until I was there. Destigmatization is so important for the well-being of everyone, especially health wise. It all seems so different until it's your normal, and only then do you understand it.

A non profit called open barbers does stuff like this in London. They run clothes swaps, do protests, just coffee and tea for any time if you go in, there's a therapist I think who works with them? It's an lgbt+ hairdressers, there's a specialist for black hair and another for colouring, and they also do home visits for disabled people who can't get there, and a sliding scale with the lowest price slots given out to poor clients... I just had to comment but there should be more places doing that!

Years ago I got very ill. I was bed ridden for about 6 months. I had long jet straight hair but over the 6 months it became matted. My appearance put me in such a deep depression. I lost too much weight, I looked like a vampire and my once long beautiful hair was a knotted disaster. I wanted to just stay in my house and never leave. My friend talked me into going to a salon to get my hair cut off and styled. I went to a salon I never been to, figured nobody knew me and they would laugh at me, refuse me and boot me out, the first one kinda did! Said they couldn't help me because my mats were to close to my scalp. Seen them smirking and whispering. I wanted to just die! My friend forced me to go to another as they took walk ins too, so I walked in and told the lady in the front, what I wanted and why it was the way it was. I was in tears. An older woman who must of been listening came up from the back looked at me and said.. no need to cut off your gorgeous hair, not sure what she seen but it was far from gorgeous. And she took me by the hand and took me back to her station then to the sink. She worked magic in that sink, used several products, some of this, wait, put some of that, wait. With in about 45 mins, she was putting a comb thru my hair. I didn't even feel any pulling. She talked to me like she knew me my whole life, talked to me like a human being, made it seem my wreck of a head of hair was something she seen a lot and was no biggie. I went in embarrassed but after a few mins she had me feeling better and hopeful. After she was done cutting and styling, my hair was longer then I remembered, super shiney and gorgeous (just like she said!), the person in the mirror was a woman I forgot existed. I cried and she cried with me. God may have healed my sickness, but he sent me to an angel to heal my soul. Price was $9.99 plus tip.. she got a 100 dollar bill. If I had more I would of given it. A few months later I went back to that salon to get a trim, I asked for the Angel who worked that miracle for me, but she retired a couple weeks before. I just watched another angel working a miracle and I can guarantee the woman hiding behind the mask was in tears with a huge smile on her face,. God bless all the stylists who use their talents, other then just use it as a job.. that can work miracles, to not only fix hair but restore confidence and fix souls. I will never forget Miss Teesha who worked at Cuts and More.. in Cleveland Ohio.. in 1998. Salon is no longer there. My guess she would be in her 80s now. ❤️

It was so matted and tangled that I cut it off and started over; she and I have the same hair type so I know the struggle that was making it through the detangling process. My hair locked itself and started the dreading process on its own. It was ultimately easier to start over. I so resonated with this lady because it was a lot of pouring going on for years that took its toll for me. I lost a lot and struggled with doing “triage”: If I could just get through this disaster … and then another thing would pop up, and then another and another and another. This went on for like 5 years. And when it was finally over, the family I thought I had to support me weren’t there, and made it a point to dismiss the pain and loss I went through. I had my now-husband and that’s it. So self care took a backseat. That’s how mine got to 2 years. I would consistently do self-care and then fall off. I just consistently started again and I’m determined to stay on it and keep doing what I know I can do for myself. I told my husband that you fell out of the same angel division that he did because I know God sent you to work miracles and heal those of us in need. Please keep working your healing power on the rest of us. We need kindness and compassion and more folks like you.❤️

My daughter caught nits when she was younger and I ended up catching it. The nit lotion ended up tangling and matting my hair immediately. It was like the girls in this video. I went to the hairdressers in tears and said whatever you do don’t cut it off as I had been growing it for years. The hairdresser without my knowledge took a razor blade to my hair and cut off the entire thing. I couldn’t even get it into a hair band. I said what did you do, she laughed. My hair went from my mid back to short, short. My hair still hasn’t regained its original length a decade later. It’s great to see a hairdresser that takes care. I also really appreciated your compassion and sensitivity towards this young lady. Support is what she needs and you gave it to her.

Can you give me advice on how to get out of my depression and comfort zone, and get up out of my mental illness and start exercising and caring about my hygiene?
@gugushabangu40973 жыл бұрын
@@onikamaraj5335 Take it easy. Don't make rash decisions. PRAY. Buy a plant and care for it and learn about it. Listen to a song and sing lyrics whole heartedly. See a therapist or someone within that profession. If it's intense like mine is, get medicated and sometimes admitted in hospital. It sometimes comes in waves cause when you think you feel better, you feel worse again, forgive yourself. Talk to a friend, you would be surprised how many people are going through the same without knowing it. I explained depression to my mom and she said, "Well, at least you know what it is called and how to treat it. All I remember was crying all the time and being angry at everything and everyone" Her depression affected me HEAVILY. If you feeling congested or overwhelmed, stop everything, leave it as is and do something else. You can do it tomorrow or later if you want. It took me 3 years to be somewhat sane. Don't overcommit. If all you did was brush your teeth, then so be it. Don't make rash decisions. Cry if you want, it helps. Even if sometimes it means watching a sad movie because you want to cry. Remember it's a phase and sometimes it's a phase that lasts longer than you wish. You can live through it and you can smile again. Just believe in yourself and in God who created you.

I’ve been in that type of depression where I didn’t comb my hair and would just throw a wig on a matted mess. I knew it was bad underneath and every time I looked at it, it made me even more depressed so I would sleep in my wigs so I wouldn’t see it. This time in my life was a reflection of what was going on with everything in my life. Just like the mess under that wig, my life was a mess and I was covering it up, not reaching out for help and settling for “the look” of being okay. I finally shared what was happening with my best friend who was also a hair stylist. She had me come over and loved on me, hugged me, prayed for me and we cried together. It took forever for me to allow her to remove my wig and I cried hard. I felt like the band-aide was ripped out and I was exposed. She worked with my hair and it felt so good to be washed and cared for when I couldn’t do it for myself. Depression is real. Please don’t live in this pain. Reach out to someone you trust.

I have a friend that went through a horrific time with depression. She is so much better now. But back than when my kids would tell me she was walking up to my house I would ask them does her hair look nice? If they said yes I knew she was in a good place. If they said no I knew she was struggling and I would be mentally ready to listen.

Hey. Sorry to hear you haven't been well. I havent been through that but I was really busy last year and i found putting twists in hair really useful. They were really rough twists but i just started at the back one day and i basically redid them one at a time every other day.. So i was doing a bit of my hair each day and it kept my hair in an ok condition throughout the first half of a very busy and stressful time.

Similar issues with my hair due to depression it seems like twice the job, My hair is long enough for a pony so I had been wearing it in a fuzzy puff with a head band, no wash no comb for almost 2 months. Tried to wash it and saw the tangles I gave up after an hour, back to the pony tail. This went on for almost 8 months, I felt ashamed. I actually got a friend to help me detangle little by little every couple of days until it was complete. I’m still depressed but twists that I can style or put a wig over helps. On my last wash day I left the twists in so I can moisturize a few sections at a time. So what it takes me 2 or 3 days...as Long as I’m working on it right. You can always message me if you have any questions. I pray and hope you can find a solution, I understand the headache it is.

When I was in my addiction and depressed feeling like the world was coming down on me I took a shower washed/conditioned my hair and instead of detangling it I put it right up in a bun. Big mistake! My hair was/is naturally curly,thick and very long. Anyway I went maybe a few weeks without washing it. Every time I took a shower I just kept it in that bun. I remember coming back home to live with my parents and my sister sat detangling and combed my hair . It took a few hours to get to he knots out. We used mane n tail conditioner I'll never forget it. Sitting in my parents living room. Jeez, That was so long ago but watching this video reminded me of that. Took many years but I did finally get clean and sober. By the grace of G-d I'll have 4 years clean in March .

Sooo true! Some stylists have attitudes and even judge people verbally if it is too tangled for them. Asking "when was the last time you washed it? Why is it so matted?" Etc. it is so embarrassing and has kept me from going back to them a 2nd time.

This hit home. I've been there, mine wasnt a whole year only because one day, after several months, my older cousin saw me and she sat me down at her house and washed my hair, detangled, and flat ironed it for me. I remember being at the point where everything was so messed up I didn't care about basically anything, not even my hair. And from then on she would just check on me and do my hair and she was so sweet, didn't judge, just talked to me about anything to keep my mind busy and was there for me. Sadly I haven't seen her in years, but watching you really touched my heart. You're an amazing person and I'm glad you could help her.

Her dream is to open her own Salon and she's closer to it every day. Sadly though, I have not seen her in person for years because I ended up in a situation that led to me moving halfway across the county and I'm only recently getting the money to go visit. The year I had FINALLY been ready to go, Covid struck about a month before I was going to make the bookings. I can't wait until things get better, I plan on hopping on the first plane back as soon as I can. Thank you again for everyone who was so sweet and supportive, I hope you all have great days! ❤️

Absolutely love how this is being handled not only by the hairdresser but the comments; Yesterday I had to go see a private dentist after years of not taking care of myself and therefore also my teeth from really suffering with mental illness and it was night and day from my regular dentist who I'd been attending the past few years to try correct everything. I went from being told I was letting myself down and that I would eventually just end up with no teeth, and even then suffering total malpractise that left me with terrible and cheap filings leading to ulcers and root canals and not being able to chew: to being treated like a human being, being inspired and given hope that my situation actually wasnt hopeless at all and god it has made all the difference in my life within 1 day. I was already picking up the pieces of my past with my teeth and trying to get them to a better place, but now I actually Feel like thats possible and am not being rushed in and out but making sure I'm actuslly getting the help I need correcting everything and setting myself up in the best way possible for the future. I just can't emphasise enough How Much this can mean to someone who is trying to take care of themselves again after a long period of not being able to or even wanting to. So lovely, much love x
