I am lowkey obsessed with the chef boyardee weird sour pickle tomato sauce. Like not all the time. But sometimes I am possessed with the Craving
@1337billybob Жыл бұрын
It's not really weird when you think about canning. It needs to have a level of acid to make it shelf stable. Which, fun fact! Is why the earliest of canned foods was poisonous because the acid would eat into the metal and mix with the food kind of like how rich people thought tomatoes were initially cause the rich ate off of pewter plates back when pewter was high in lead. (Pewter miniatures today are not made with lead) EDIT: tomato sauce on it's own for low heat canning (this is not low heat cause the pasta is mush) isn't acidic enough so you need to add an acid like vinegar. Similarly if you add something like pasta or stuffed pasta you need to have enough acid to still reach that point which basically means you have a pickled pasta that is also mushy cause of high heat canning. I stick to frozen or refrigerator isle pasta and jarred pasta for a ready to eat meal.

All jokes aside, Chef Boyardee is actually credited with saving both the American tomato market and Europeans cheese export market during and after depression and after WWII. The company also produced rations for soldiers during WWII. Ettore Boiardi, the founder, supervised the preparation of the homecoming meal served by Woodrow Wilson at the White House for 2,000 returning World War I soldiers. He's truly an immigrant success story and a bit of an American (food industry) icon. The "home products" however have changed dramatically in the last few decades.

In my house we put respect on Chef Boyardee's name. He provided our troops with rations in WW2 and in the Great Depression he began to make his canned goods so that people had affordable food that wouldn't go bad if they didn't eat it fast enough. It's still cheap today because he wanted it to stay affordable for the poorest people.

Okay…… so admittedly this video got me in the mood to try Chef Boyardee products again after trying it once at my aunt and uncle’s house during Christmas time when the former made it for me at lunch time and it was….. not bad (I had the beef ravioli) but wasn’t really super impressed with the quality either. That said, since trying every product I could find, I’ve….. grown to like their pasta products more if you can get past the soupy sour tomato sauce (usually the one labeled as “pasta sauce” instead of “tomato sauce”) and mushy texture which tastes SO much better cooked on the stove top. That said though, I mostly just prefer the raviolis and think they are the only ones worth buying imo. That said……. Here are all my thoughts on them: Mini ravioli (can) - Decent but just not enough meat. Gets a C. Mini ravioli (microwave) - Just tiny little pasta squares with NO meat at all but tiny slivers of meat in the tomato sauce. Not disgusting but a waste of money as well. C- Beef ravioli (can) - The flagship product of their company is pretty good. An even balance of meat inside even with a slight generic flavor. I’d give it a B. Beef ravioli (microwave, not in this video) - Not bad but I much prefer it when cooked on the stove top. B- Mini beef ravioli and meatballs - Again, not much meat in the ravioli themselves but the meatballs do add something. C+ Cheese ravioli (can, not in this video) - This one definitely is my all-time favorite ravioli product from them and pasta product overall. The cheese flavor is pretty satisfying, as is the tomato sauce flavor. A+ Cheese ravioli (microwave, not in this video) - This one was a pretty big downgrade. B- Overstuffed beef ravioli - I mean it’s not bad but the beef is a bit overwhelming here. C+ Overstuffed Italian sausage ravioli (not in this video) - The tomato sauce brings it up a bit and the Italian sausage flavor was nice. B- Beefaroni (can, not in this video) - Okay pasta but found myself pretty disappointed with the quantity. C Beefaroni (microwave) - About the same for me. Slightly lower C. Lasagna (can) - This was pretty decent but not really something I’d buy again personally just because the noodles were okay. The tomato sauce was what mostly kept me interested. B- Lasagna (microwave, not in this video) - Meh. C+ Mini spaghetti and meatballs (can, not in this video) - Not bad but too small a texture. C Spaghetti and meatballs (can) - Better quantity size, noodles were a bit slurpy but the tomato’s and meatballs kept me interested. C+ Spaghetti and meatballs (microwave, not in this video) - Eh. Stove top was better. C Jumbo spaghetti and meatballs (not in this video) - I find the meat balls taste better when bigger. B- Mini spaghetti rings (can) - The tomato sauce and meatballs kept me interested but don’t really care for them otherwise cause they’re just spaghetti o’s rip-offs. C Mini spaghetti rings (microwave, not in this video) - whatever. Same deal. Slightly lower C. Mini ABC’s and 123’s (can) - Again, tomato sauce and meatballs kept me interested but that’s about it. Wasn’t a fan of the texture with this one. C- Mini ABC’s and 123’s (microwave, not in this video) - Again, slight downgrade. Slight lower C- Cheeseburger macaroni (not in this video) - This one was decent but wouldn’t buy again personally. C+ Pasta in butter sauce (not in this video) - This. Was. HORRIBLE! That “butter sauce” was SUPER BLAND and had no flavor to it at all. F Mac and cheese - MUCH WORSE! This was just an absolute disgrace to Mac and cheese and I would NEVER buy this again. Even LOWER F! Rice with chicken and vegetables - I would typically go out of my way to buy this but it was actually very satisfying none the less. B Mini pasta shells and meatballs (can, not in this video) - Pretty decent but wouldn’t buy again personally. B- Mini pasta shells and meatballs (microwave, not in this video) - Eh. C+

My brother loved the ravioli when we were kids (80's). I thought it was meh. It was his special treat, the thing we bougnt just for him. I bought ravioli for my kids and the smell makes me wanna barf. But, when they came out with the original recipe versions recently, I gave it a reluctant try. Omg! They tasted like FOOD. The Beefaroni was so similar to home made casseroles. It was amazing. I always mocked my dad for saying things used to taste better, but in this case, it was absolutely true. Why do they make this horrible pasty nasty sludge when they have the ability to make something GOOD???

Making food-style product with tomato-flavored sauce and an amalgamation of chicken feet and pork knuckle is way cheaper and more profitable

I'm not sure I've seen those original recipe versions? Sounds interesting, I'll be looking for those :)

@@HiNRGboy I don't think they make them any more. I saw them at Kroger and Walmart. They had a tan or beige kinda label. I regret not stocking up!

Funny how he liked the regular ravioli more than the minis because it had more meat, and then he despised the double stuff ones.
