My favorite thing about the watermelon beans are that they’re tiny watermelons in design: mottled green outsides and pink-red insides. There are a few others like it but I think watermelon was the first to be “anatomically correct,” lol. Apologies if somebody already said it.

I feel like this is a testament to the value of a candy that comes in upwards of 50 flavors. I used to get the 49 flavor bags a lot of the time as a kid, and I ranked all of them, and there isn't even a single point of overlap in our favorite flavors. We could split a bag and not fight over a single bean.

It's pretty impressive how a brand that made a bean that tastes *exactly* like popcorn also made their plum flavor taste like rotten meat. Toasted marshmallow is the best and I think that's why seem to deliberately put so 2 or 3 in each bag.

I liked them, because of the weird aftertaste. they were Interesting. you eat them, and contemplate the strangeness. a lot of Jelly Belly flavors are just vaguely fruity, but some have a strangeness, like the buttered popcorn being slightly salty, or the smoky aftertaste of toasted marshmallow.

i used to eat jelly belly beans pretty frequently when i was a kid, and bc i'm v particular abt flavors i got VERY familiar w what they all looked like. i was surprised that i was still able to identify a lot of them by sight--and so recognized when you'd gotten the flavor wrong and were abt to be (un)pleasantly surprised. lol

To be fair, artificial banana didn't always fit that distinction of 'it doesn't taste like real banana.' At one point, artificial banana flavoring was modeled after the variety of banana that was most commonly eaten- the Gros Michel. However, in the 1950's an outbreak of Panama disease severely diminished the production capacity of it, and most growers switched over to the more disease resistant, but also not as flavorful Cavendish banana. By 1965, the Gros Michel banana was declared extinct, and the only thing we have left of it is... Artificial banana flavoring.

The Gros Michel still exists in tropical countries and as grown by hobbyists. I don’t know if artificial banana flavor is modeled after Gros Michel per se rather than that it just has the most prominent compound that’s characteristic of bananas, isoamyl acetate, which is also described as pear-like btw. Fruits have tons of different compounds that contribute to their characteristic flavor. It’s just that the Gros Michel had a higher concentration of isoamyl acetate than Cavendish, which is more subtle in flavor.

I made my girlfriend mad by making a clip of "there's cantaloupe!" and playing it once or twice a day. I'm french and I didn't know that word and I found it super funny (in French it's merely called "melon"). This video has expanded my horizons and knowledge. I watch all your food reviews, find them very entertaining and even soothing to watch (thanks to the nice background music). I now consider myself educated on American snacks. Man this review feels so nostalgic! I'm not as big on jellybeans anymore, but as a kid they were the go-to candy for my sister and I at the candy store in the mall where you could pick individual flavors. If I recall I think rootbeer, strawberry daquiri, and either cream soda or french vanilla were my favorites. I'd be interested to try them now and see which ones I like most, bc I'm sure my tastes have changed a lot. Thanks for a fun video!

Jelly Belly has too many flavors. Can we agree on that? Like, unless you're just okay with all of them, you're probably going to have half a bag of flavors like Licorice or Plum. I know generic jellybeans will probably have like one flavor I don't like, but there's just too much variety to warrant getting the standard variety bag. yeah the only time to buy Jelly Belly is at a candy store or a grocery store that has the self-serve with specific flavors. as a kid I would mostly just get bags of toasted marshmallow, licorice (I'm a sick freak that likes black licorice), or root beer. didn't really care for a lot of the fruity flavors. I did actually like the red apple one. hated cinnamon, too, I would throw out all the cinnamons when I got a mixed bag.
