Main developer and creator of this installer here, stumbled across your video just now and wanted to say that 11:32 - made me happy to hear and the excitement at 6:07 also cheered me up. Glad you loved the overall experience, if you haven't tried it yet the user experience *should* feel and look a lot better these days because we dropped an improved version of the TUI just after your video was made :) The current stable version has a few smaller bugs however and I'm about to release the next version in a few days. But the user interface is there to try if you wanna give it a go :) Anyways, keep up the good work!

Arch always makes you learn stuff. Even during its installation. It taught me to read logs, to 'man' every command in terminal, taught me udev, taught me to explore sysfs stuff, taught me to only keep packages that I really need. It was hard in the beginning but you do come to understand your machine far better after all.

I liked that ThinkPad. You can replace the WiFi module, the HDD/SDD, and the memory sticks. Congratulations for the price and the choice! As a device name, you could call this new laptop Amelia, in honor of Amelia Earhart (famous American pilot). As you will be using this device as a test pilot for distros and other works, I think it's a fair name.

I thought the main attraction of Arch was the learning process of doing the traditional install. When/if I test it on one of my machines I'll do the fun, slow, step-by-step with the wiki open on the side, like you mentioned. As for naming the machine: Veronica + Arch(ie) leads back to both the old internet programs (using your-neck-of-the-woods gopher protocols) and the even older comic books, so maybe something like Jughead or Betty or Reggie?
@quark44792 жыл бұрын
I've been using arch as my daily os, and on various things around my house, for years now and I don't think the install process is the main attraction anymore. Nowadays Arch has the best wiki of any distro, and the size and convenience of the AUR is unlike any other tool as well. It's really grown! I remember when it used to break a lot, and could be temperamental, but now i use it on my home server and it's been happily humming along for years :) I will also stick to using the wiki most likely, i think it is fun and i have a lot to configure, but it's really exciting that the distro is open to more people with this script!

Like the video and can appreciate the nuances of all the installers. I'm a Gentoo user, and I live and die by it, but I always like arch and try to install it in a vm once a month to keep my chops fresh. I have used the script and I can appreciate it, it has made my approach to gentoo a lil less canonical, and I start to appreciate the use of scripts, in fact it takes the knowledge in order to make a script. Although I have never used vanilla Arch as a main daily driver, I have installed it countless times, and the installation of arch is much simpler than gentoo. I have a step by step install order for both arch and gentoo if anyone is interested, both in rc-service and systemd for gentoo. I just have to say how much I like gentoo, because when I set it up correctly I can have a full kde desktop go from shutdown to new logged in desktop in under 20 seconds, I don't think there is any other distro that can do that.

Side story: "Gnomeo and Juliet" is an animated clip I stumbled upon and yet seems fitting for the division of Arch linux users and non-users (my past perception is it's for the knowledgeable linux users vs other distros that are more new-to-linux friendly). Gnomeo is a blue gnome (check the arch logo color) and Juliet is a red gnome. The archinstall script you show is the union of the two groups... No pacstrap? I'll try `archinstall`, maybe this coming weekend. Ext4 is probably the best option for a single drive. I usually pick zfs for DAS.
@adymode2 жыл бұрын
I declare that Btrfs is really well suited now to us who don't shy away from just the occasional little bit of command line control. The snapshots are fantastic especially for rolling release, its got great transparent zstd compression, checksums to watch for any bitrot, its almost as fast as Zfs despite not having an "arc cache", it is as stable as anything except perhaps Ext4 ( Countless times my flakey travel laptop has power crashed with no resulting corruption) For the final cherry unlike Zfs - none of it is owned by Oracle, so its part of Linux. Sure don't install it for someone who wont notice it filling up with auto generated snapshots and then wonder why its full , its not ready for 'public' - but its more than ready for anyone with interest. The difference between a system which instantly takes a snapshot before installing cutting edge 'upgrades' and one which cant (on ext4) is tremendous.
@gjermundification2 жыл бұрын
@@adymode Does btrfs bring anything to the table in a 1 - one drive setup that ext4 does not? I use snapshots in Joyent SmartOS server side every day, mainly for installations and backups, and I have Time Machine on my Macs, and there is some convenience to the snapshots of APFS. Not sure I like it on a single drive setup. Though it's beautifully implemented as you already mentioned snapshots and available disk space require a baby sitter for its diff.
@adymode2 жыл бұрын
@@gjermundification The snapshots and everything works on a single drive. They can be autogenerated on install and updates, grub can boot into them in case something messed up - Ive not had too yet but its very good to know its there. And I have 'timeshift' set to keep 3 running daily snapshots so I can easily fish out pre-borked versions of random source files outside version control, which Ive had to do a couple of times as Im not fastidious about commiting to VCS. Besides anything else, it think its very cool, just as cool on 1 drive : )

Wow, that Aptiva pic takes me back. That was my third computer (first was an Apple IIc, and second was a Packard Bell running Windows 3.1).

You should have started your channel yrs ago. My fav. Linux of all time was Ultimate 2.7 It was amazing and everything just worked. Well, Wi-Fi was a pain sometimes. Look, you made me want to install it and get it working on my desktop. Thanks. Going to do it now.

I love Thinkpads, they are bullet proof but, the display and the speakers leave a lot to be desired.

Interesting coincidence. I've been a loyal PopOS user for the past four years and recently a friend helped me finally build up the courage to try installing arch. It was surprisingly simpler than what most people on the internet make it out to be. But well, I did have him (my friend) - who has been using arch for a while - to guide me through most of the process so I suppose I kinda cheated? So anyway. I tried out arch on a virtual machine and the coincidence is that I've been thinking of getting a used Thinkpad to use arch on it too so.. samesies high five!

I actually just switched from Arch/KDE to Pop!_OS because of the look and feel, hard to beat, so pretty. Running on a couple of Thinkpads and Intel NUCs, great experience.

Awesome video! I may try Arch sometime now. As for a name..."Roscoe". Have no idea why..when you asked for a name that popped in my head. Keep up the awesome work!

It's worth it just to see what's available in the Arch world! It's a huge ecosystem with some of the best documentation in Linux. Hope you enjoy it, and thank you for watching! :)

It's fun that you call "old" a laptop that is newer then my newest laptop I own (and that one is more then enough for my needs) :)
@VeronicaExplains2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this thing really isn't very old at all. It's not the most recent model, but I have customers who are using laptops in production that are much older than this! It's older than a new one, though! :P

Great video, appreciate the humor. Yeah what's up with arch installs, no idea why it needs to even be this much work, which is way less than the official wiki has you do.

I know I'm late. Computer name should be Voyager. Thanks for this video, I'll give this version of Arch too. Also the pick for a used machine was good too.

Just a couple of months ago I installed arch for the first time and I did it manually, it was actually a lot of fun but I really do want to try this archinstall script
