🇬🇷 Let's Walk Around The BEST Neighborhoods In Athens Greece 2022

We were able to spend 2 weeks in Athens Greece during Summer of 2022 and really got to know some of the different neighborhoods around the famous Acropolis.
In this video we start by giving you a tour of the "number 1" neighborhood known as Plaka Athens which is famous for it's cobblestone roads, village feel, safety, class, and beautiful buildings.
Following this we go into Monastiraki which is another very popular neighborhood known for it's shopping, beautiful views of the acropolis, amazing flea market, and hipster vibe.
Following this we go into Psyri which is our favorite neighborhood and it is well known for it's graffiti, traditional / affordable food, live music, and more.

TIPS FOR FELLOW TRAVELERS:
1) CARRY CASH
It's a good rule of thumb to always have a little bit of cash in the local currency wherever you are since not everywhere is trustworthy and not everywhere takes cash or Visa.
2)DO RESEARCH
Research the neighborhoods ahead of time to make sure you are comfortable staying in an area.
3) TAXI IN ATHENS
Taxi Beat is a user friendly app in Athens Greece similar to Uber.

Koukaki, and Kolonaki are also great neighborhoods in Athens . Yes Omonia is unfortunately not a suggested area. More neighborhoods to explore but considered suburban, Kifissia ( the more affluent live there) Glyfada, Paleo Falero ( nice beach there). Athens is a big city, beautiful, unique, historic and of course there are the less fortunate areas. Lykavitto Hill is a great place to see all of Athens from above. Great view.

Hi pj just to update on a former post, my sister stayed in omonia square and was totally safe but was robbed in plaka, guess it can happen anywhere

That's really unfortunate. Sorry to hear that. Yes bad things can happen anywhere but some areas are more likely than others to have crime. Does your sister have any tips for other travelers?

What did you find in the hostel bed?

bed bugs like I've never seen before. We went to get a private room too and originally the bed bug reviews were hidden on Google. After we checked, we got our money back, and I looked online again and found the reviews about bed bugs. Happy I didn't set my bags down. And I want to note that they had just replaced all of the beds (they were sitting outside of the hostel) but they clearly didn't get rid of the bugs.

The first Airbnb we stayed at had good reviews too but it was disgusting and in what appeared to be part brothel. There were people shooting up drugs in front of the door and then bloody mattresses being thrown out in the lobby. Overall I would suggest paying extra in Athens to avoid these things. Even an upscale hostel would be better.

The murals and artistic graffitis are really cool! Too bad to see all that tagging though (the ugly type of graffiti) - those ones make cities look ugly and dirty.

That's how I feel also! I love the artwork but the senseless tagging has always bothered me. Especially on historic monuments, I can't believe that people do this:/

@@strayamericans I live in Oakland California. As a single FEMALE in Europe, I feel more threatened by male hustlers as I am more of a target than here. Here there is more violence and crime around me but they personally leave me alone. They do not hustle me to try to say Hi in 5 languages or keep trying after I fiercely tell them to back off (which happened once in San Francisco by a creepy european tourist that thought I was fair game for him in the gay district). Your videos on Athens are some of the most helpful...I think I would like this last neighborhood as well.

Just watching your video of monastaraki square and you didn't even go in to it because for whatever reason you thought you were going to get robbed or mugged, stayed in omonia square were you recently said was a bit of a dodgy place to say and spent many evenings in monastaraki in restaurants which where lovely and yes there were a few beggars please tell me a city were they don't exist, have to say coming from a country where gun crime and violence is the norm, school shootings etc. really think you should look closer to home before you start criticising other countries
