It's like all the interpersonal tension that would develop normally in a show outside of "Gene Roddenberry's enlightened future" has been transferred into the relationship between the crew of the enterprise and Star Fleet Command. There's a good chance over the course of the show that any given admiral interacting with the crew of the Enterprise will end up phasered or arrested.

It is a weird, repetitive plot line. Starfleet, for all it's achievements and moral high ground, is run by some of the worst people in the Federation.

When I first bought the Season 7 DVDs, this was the first episode I watched, for what that's worth. Riker dilemmas are always good, and I generally think this is the best episode of Season 7 outside of All Good Things... Watching the Enterprise cloak/decloak is cool. The idea that Riker is under orders from someone above Picard's head is a nifty concept (and reasonable in-universe). John Locke (Terry O'Quinn) plays a good smarmy villain. DON'T tell him what he can't do...

Agreed. I think one of the strongest parts is the Riker-Picard conflict, which makes complete sense in terms of being in-universe and also being a good central conflict.

From wikipedia: "Bellerophon later fell from the winged horse's back while trying to reach Mount Olympus. Afterwards, Zeus transformed Pegasus into the eponymous constellation." Probably a lofty analogy with the first detail, but an interesting parallel with how the ship phases into the asteroid.

I just saw the Pegasus posted, Im excited to hear and read the thoughts on this epidose. like the post below me when I got season 7 this was the episode i watched first and the episode i showed my 15 year old son to get him interested in star trek with me. I thought this episode had the best dynamics to show someone how good star trek tng can be: great script, awesome acting, it didnt feel cheesy in any way. now my son watches the series and uses this podcast as a companion to his intro of star trek. great work guys.

Roddenberry being against 'sneaking around' is weird. I mean Starfleet is made of explorers and scientists along with their military/defense roles, and scientists in the field use camouflage too. You don't get those great nature documentaries by making your presence known. The Enterprise could've saved itself a lot of trouble in Galaxy's Child if it had a phased cloak when studying the mother creature.

+Good Clip good point, and also isn't the camouflaged observation in who watches the watchers and homeward "sneaking around"?

Pretty much, yeah. The Federation got screwed on that treaty. Pressman was right, he just went about it the wrong way.

You know on pointing how Riker doesn't seem more remorseful or cautious kinda makes him a sociopath!

I keep thinking that Star Trek: Discovery will be about the Romulan-Federation War, and the signing of the Treaty of Algeron. But the timeline doesn't make any sense. Bryan Fuller keeps hinting that the new show will be about something already hinted at in canon, but not fully explored. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out the premise. Do you have any thoughts or insights on what it might be?

Enterprise kinda ruined itself completely (your failure is now complete, at first I was but a learner...nevermind ), with this episode, andthe episode actually I think is well done. It reminded me of the Philadelphia Experiment move with the people partially in and out of the deck. But I don't see how this would violate a treaty on working on invisible fields. This is like an advanced extrapolation of the transporter. I did like that they were trapped in the asteroid and I kind of want to just see a special throw away episode of this mutiny.
