Self-generative music is music that is generated by a system, letting the computer compose for you.
In today’s video, we are going to use Ableton Live midi devices to create an endless combination of melodic information that will be repeated to infinity, making different chapters of music one after another, self-generative music lets the computer compose for you:
The instrument I will use for this demonstration is Spitfire Audio LABS, a free collection of around 40 plugins with intense cinematic feels, guitar, piano, pads, cello, strings, and so on…..

I don't know how I have missed your channel for so long. I love setting up systems like this in Live (and AUM and in a limited way in FL Studio) and I think the way you describe your patches here is fantastic. I'm seeking out all of your social media that I am active in as well. Really nice! Subscribed!

This is incredible, excellent tutorial explanation. The lack of clear time signature with the long etherial instrumentations reminds me of Brian Eno's ambient sound music which I love. So to be able to accomplish this through complex automation and generative music is quite impressive!

Rico thank you for this very generous and complete diagram. As a fellow practitioner of this type I realize it is a snapshot and I am sure you have even made many more refinements in the months since!! You are clearly a very creative and accomplished technician, artisan and artist. And your musical taste in this piece is very successful to its purpose. What a pleasure to locate your KZbin channel!

This is absolutely amazing. I’ve been debating learning Kontakt and/or C++ to build my own plugins, but I might just get Ableton as you can basically build entire instruments and soundscapes as you demonstrated!

Fantastic tutorial and thank you Rico :) It inspired me to start a blank project in Ableton and follow along with your video. Your 20 minute video turned into a 2 and a half hour long play/pause, alt+tab building session in which I believe I recreated your effects chain. I do not have the MFL device Random Chord Generator Pro so I went without it (working on a way to simulate the same effect in Live). I also did not have the Scale "C Minor" and I went with "Minor" but did tune it to D. I used my own chord progressions and it sounds lush and delicious, yummy even. My question, or request for a future video would be a walkthru of the sends you used in the video. Have a great day and keep making wonderful music and the occasional tutorial, but don't stop making music :D.

It get even more interesting if you throw some midi controllers in to adjust some of the parameters: you can, kind of, emulate eurorack (which is the ideal source for generative music, but also called "eurocrack" as it's very, very expensive).

Question, if you had an orchestral VST, could you use a similar approach in this video to make different ostinati for different instrument groups? For example, do a 16th note ostinano in the violins and an triplet pattern in the flutes? This way you could more quickly prototype different orchestral textures before even beginning to write out complex orchestral pieces.
@ricocasazza
@ricocasazza 2 жыл бұрын
hi AAron, yes you can do this, but to write the MIDI in triplet it's something that you have to do, perhaps with Max for Live there are midi devices that let you even write MIDI randomly with your custom desire. i'd suggest you go to maxforlive.com/ to discover new MIDI devices

The notes in each channel/instrument are randomised, but the different instruments are not randomly interacting with each other. They are playing in a loop manner all at the same time. I think that is the missing element that will create true self-generative music. Is it possible to achieve that without advanced algorithm programming?
@ricocasazza
@ricocasazza 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly it’s just each channel has a randomiser note generator and also randomising intensity and tone. Maybe I’ll do another tutorial for channel interaction

Atmospheric music is the easiest music to make and doesn't need to be done by AI because I feel its aways missing something. Sounds nice like atmospheric background sound for a TV show but it's not memorable.
