Sophie Friedrike Auguste of Anhalt-Zerbst alias Ekaterina (Catherine) II was the second non Russian born Empress of the Russian Empire; after Ekaterina I who actually was a Lithuanian maid born into a peasant family. Peter I fell in love with Martha Skavronska while she was still working as a servant in the household of the emperor’s friend Prince Men’shikov in St. Petersburg. She became Peter’s I second wife and the first souverain empress of the Russian empire after his death in 1725 until her own death in 1727, under the name Ekaterina (Catherine) I.

That's the same thing with the whole British dynasties since the fall of the Stuarts. The real family name of Elizabeth II was Saxony-Coburg and Gotha, the family name of Charles III must be Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, Queen Victoria was not only married to Prince Albert of Saxony-Coburg and Gotha, she by herself came out of the German dynasty of the Welfs, in her case the house of Hannover etc. etc. This really is something quite normal for higher aristocracy, they are usually not involved in the nationalistic thing which caused so many brutal wars.

@@zbh-gl3gg actually the name of Charles III would be Mountbatten, after he adopted his uncles name before Charles was born. Which is, however, also of German origin. BUT the difference is that, despite their German names, apart from George I and William III all British monarchs were Brits. Catherine was born and raised in Prussia.

No, she is not. And especially the film with Zeta-Jones is soooo far from the history of the empress Catherine II as the moon from planet earth... And to be correct, the title Vserossiyskaya imperatritsa (Всероссiйская императрица) translates into English as Allrussian empress. Like all Russian monarchs after Peter I, Catherina II was only tsaritsa (not tsarina) of Kazan’, tsaritsa of Astrachan’, and tsaritsa of Sibir’ (which were former Tatar khanates transformed into tsardoms after Russian conquer), but the older title tsar’ or tsaritsa of Moscow and of All the Rus’ was no longer used after Peter had taken the title of Pater Patriae and Allrussian Emperor in 1721.

@@Italia_e_Serbia54_Sibiria во-первых, Петр III же был «законным Государем» потому, что его тетя назначила его ее наследником на троне после того, когда она сама узурпировала российский престол у племянника ее двоюродной сестры, которая смогла стать императрицей, так как внук Петра Великого очень рано умер, и так как мать Елизаветы, маленькая литовская служанка не успела назначить свою дочку как наследника. А Александр I прекрасно знал о том, что хотят убить его отца Павла в 1801 году. Простите, это же на самом деле просто все равно, что у Кати Второй не было права сидеть на российском престоле. Она очень даже хорошо царствовала над Россией, и конечно лучше ее собственного сына.

@@zbh-gl3gg напомнить права дворян после её прихода? И после этого Пугачёвское восстание, лишь ради того чтобы усадить Павла 1 . А вы недооцениваете его в вклад развитие страны, особенно в армию . Посмотрите, прочитайте про Павла, может вы хоть что-то поймёте. Хотя на кой вам если он был против англичан.
