Is there any issues with your guitars being laid on their backs long term? I always read you should have them either on their side of vertically. Can anyone chime in on this? I love this setup!
@GregsGarage11 ай бұрын
No issue storing them on their backs. The necks have an adjustable truss rod, so as long as you have your guitars adjusted, they won't take on any additional stress. Many vintage guitars have been pulled out of their cases having been stored under a bed for decades without issue.

Excellent job on the guitar cabinet. I really like the metal box paired with the finished plywood. Utilitarian and elegant at the same time. The inlay technique with the numbers and Skyscraper Guitars logo was super nice. Great build Greg.

Thanks Pete. I enjoyed making this one. It will come in handy for the guitars I'm getting ready to build... I've got a bunch that will all be under way at the same time... At some point I actually use the top, but it's living under a workbench right now. When I do use the top, I like the thought of carpet up there to keep from damaging finish.

Wow! That is one really slick build! I like how you integrated your inlay on the front and the metal framing structure used. Just another player throwing my 2 cents in here, yes do a thin mat or drawer liner like you said to fit the inset of the top so you have a soft work surface right above and no worry of hard surfaces clashing. Maybe go black on the sides too with some flat handles to emulate a roadie flight case. Other than doweling the screw holes too like you mentioned it looks really nice as is. Enjoyed the detailed explanation and the solid construction techniques, well crafted, well presented, & well done!

Just in case you never heard it before but another way to help ensure metal stays where you want it is to "skip around" as they call it. All this means is weld small amounts at a time and move around so that you're not heating up one place much. Using this method we would weld a rectangular tank approximately 12"x24"x30' and it would stay straight along the 30' direction. The first tank like this that was welded with out this method turned into a large banana. I REALLY liked the whole build. I can easily see something like this for my wood tools.

Nice job Greg... Cool looking style and design with unique application of hardware and materials! Heard your frustration with Watco wipe on poly at the end of the video. I've not used that brand of product but I have always been quite pleased with the results I get from Old Masters gel Poly... ask me about it sometime if interested. For beautiful wood like your drawer fronts where a velvety tactile feel is a plus the gel poly is a much better choice than spray applied lacquer IMHO. I'm kind of jealous of your ability to engrave drawer numbers and logo into your drawer fronts though! 😟 Best, Matt
@GregsGarage4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip about gel poly. I'll give it a shot on my next project... I do like the finish from the Watco, but man, it was a long haul to get there.

@@GregsGarage if you have seen the Live Edge cabinet door video that I did I think I put three coats on those doors and it was more than enough finish on them. It's stupid simple to apply and virtually foolproof. The most challenging part for me is waiting 12-24 hours between coats rather than 24 minutes as with lacquer

Great video! Are there any long term negative side-effects on the neck with this kind of storage? I see that the body is slightly raised as each guitar sits in the cradle. I ask because when in a case the angle produced by the cradle is lower and was wondering whether there is any long term negative side-effects to the neck and if so how to mitigate them. Thanks in advance to you or anyone who kindly responds.
@GregsGarage10 ай бұрын
There is a long standing debate about storing guitars on hanger vs in cases... Then flat vs on end vs on the side... I haven't seen gravity affect a guitar long term. I have seen moisture (or lack thereof) have adverse effects on a neck. If you're starting with quality materials, the neck will be just fine sitting on a neck rest... Vince Gill stores a lot of his collection this way. I'd put him at the top of the food chain with regard to collectors who are also monster players. If he thought for a second storing a guitar like that would have a negative effect, I guarantee he would change his method.

The music is from someone else. I used to record my own, but then companies would claim copyright to it, so I quit doing that. If I didn't catch them, they would monetize my content and take all the earnings... For a song I wrote, recorded and own the copyright too... Weird right?

Nice Build. Metal moves more than wood! I judiciously use a sledge hammer when needed. I got your Squares Saturday and used them on a couple projects today. I really like them! Thanks again for getting them to me so fast. Was that square stock 16 gauge? Seems I always go thicker walled, then say “why”? Thanks again. Mark Mc
@GregsGarage4 жыл бұрын
I think the tubing was .120 wall. I can't remember the gauge. It welds nicely with Tig or .023 Mig wire. Any thicker and I have to change wire size or I have to turn the Tig power up to BLAST! You can see in the video I put my leather on because I could feel the UV... I'm used to thin stuff where I don't have to don the jacket.

@GregsGarage4 жыл бұрын
I understand GAS completely! The video has a shot of the sketch I did... That's as close to a set of drawings and materials as I have. I recall getting all the drawer sides and the case sides and top out of one sheet of pre-finished plywood. The drawer bottoms were MDF and the back of the case came out of a spare sheet I had laying around. The steel is 1" square tubing. I used about 30' of it to make the frame. 4 casters, 5 drawer slides and 5 pieces of African mahogany about 5" x 42" if I remember correctly.
