Lets Load A Little Bit Of Red Cedar

Just a quick load of some small to medium red cedar to a PJ tandem dump trailer is the focal point of the video. High winds blew all of these over on a steep hillside about a year ago. My cousin on the excavator offered them to me for the sawmill. Fortunately for me, he had already cut them off of the root wads and used the Bobcat to get them to the top of the hill.
A quick trip home and dumped, the whole project was accomplished in just a portion of the morning. The smaller ones will be used for ranking the firewood on so it does not rest directly on the dirt floor of the wood shed. The larger ones will be turned into 1" woodworking project materials or wall coverings for the 'she shed' for the Missus. It was a fun day today and let it be known that there is plenty more to come of harvesting red cedar for the mill. #cedar, #dumper, #sawmill

As with everything, the county and permits is the BIG thing. But all good things in time. She doesn't know it yet, but its going to do double duty as a butcher shop. (-;

Lydia would love that for the walls of her Garden Shed, former Blacksmith Shop. The bug repelling effect might just keep the stink bugs down. 😁😎

It's from an uncle. I bought it in '94 with 21,000 miles on it. It's an '85 Farm truck that I converted to a dually and flatbed after tearing the rear end out 4 times with excessive loads. I think it just turned 85,000 miles now. I have put most of the miles on it since I retired 11 years ago. I always had company service trucks, so this one didn't get wore out going to work.

Some of those logs will be nice looking lumber I imagine. That was a pretty fair load for this time, good one indeed.

I believe Reg, the best is yet to come. There's just about this much laying there in the pile already then we start in the flat pasture cutting some really nice cedar. Some looked to have as many as 4 nine footers in one tree.

@@tractorman4461 Those would be tall and stately trees I'll bet. What do you use cedar for mostly, lumber?

@@regsparkes6507 Back in the day most all our fence posts were cedar posts with RR ties for corner posts and gate posts. We'd split 6 to 8 inch ones in half then sharpen them on the buzz saw to drive in the ground. We made a lot of lumber as well and that's what I do now. Most all lumber but my son wants some 6x6's for target posts for his shooting range. All the Missus' closets are cedar lined as well as our 4 season room and a large area downstairs has cedar wall covering either at a 45* angle or halfway up with a narrow shelf.

Yes, I've made several cedar chests over the years. Me and Dad split hundreds of cedar poles in half then sharpened them on the buzz saw for fence posts. One daughter and the Missus still have their large cedar chests here at home. I made them just shy of the beds widths. Filled with blankets and other cool lady stuff. Thanks Clarence for the cool comment my friend.

Maybe about twenty five years ago we had a massive amount of trees go down from wind shear. Hardwood and conifers alike. What I remember from that was as the boards came off the saw, the grain was under so much stress that it would literally pop up leaving ridges on the board. I was told that it did not plane well either. Those trees were a twisted mess, your results may vary.

Yes, with wind shook trees, that's always a concern. I'm banking on this having been straight line winds laying them down on the hillside all just pointing straight up hill. But the first one to go on the mill will show what to expect with the rest of them I believe. Thanks for the added input and thanks for watching !!

As mentioned in one of the earlier comments, some of those logs are pretty nice and straight. You should be able to get a few pieces of lumber out of them. My brother in law dropped a 460 out of a Lincoln into a 1979 Mustang once. He had to do some reworking in the fender area and put a front end from a Ford LTD underneath it to hold the weight of the engine. It could lay rubber at any gear, any speed. His cousin wanted it and got it, but he couldn't handle it and put it into a ditch.

Not THAT's a Mustang to have some fun with. I hope it had power steering !! Might have needed a little counterweight to hold the rear end down a bit. LOL

A bandsawmill is more efficient to saw cedar that a circle saw mill. A circle sawmill over 1/2 of the log ends up being slabs or sawdust.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 2 ай бұрын
With a bandsaw every fifth board is free compared to a circle mill. The fifth board is sawdust on those guys. But I really enjoy the circle mills much better. Bandsaw has roughly 1/16" kerf and my 60'' circle mill takes a 9/32'' kerf IF the tooth is swaged correctly.

That's an old company truck. 292 V-8 three speed floor shifter. It had a service body and a hydraulic telescoping ladder that'd reach a little over two stories. I gotta figure out how to title it though...if I can anyway.
