Good leather work, but a holster for a cap and ball revolver doesn't really go with a cartridge belt...

Yes it does since the customer hade a cartridge converted revolver.

Is there a trick when dying to get it even? Last time I used one of those applicators I got a blotchy result.

I dye when it's damp, the dye will penetrate slower and it gets more even.
