Lets Make Glaze : 08 OMG Best Kiln Opening EVER!!!!!!

If you've been following my journey recently you will know that I've attempted to make my own glazes from scratch following Joe at ‪@OldForgeCreations‬.
Its been pretty overwhelming with so much to learn, and out of 20 glazes I've attempted I will be thrilled if just one is a success. Tracking my journey on YT was to help others on a similar journey but I didn't realise how much additional pressure I would feel at this kiln opening LOL
I have a few extra special pieces in here too for family which I needed to be a success as I didn't have time to make more. So altogether this kiln opening did present me with some pressure - but good pressure!
I will follow this YT with a detailed analysis of each test tile comparing to what it was 'supposed' to look like, but for now here is the unedited opening of my very first 'make your own' glazes.

Definitely beginners luck, but I'll take it lol! Looking forwards to try some layering tests, and then scale up and add to some pieces. So much fun! I've just uploaded a follow up YT (09) which includes all the names, recipes and close up of both top and bottom shelf results, comparing them to what Joes results were. Hope this is helpful.

YOU DID IT!! We all knew you would. Can’t wait to see the studio. Of course your organization skills will really help and inspire all of us! I am soooo excited about these test tiles! Wow. The first mug is just AMAAAZING!!!! Love the other pieces as well and I know your family will love them. The first mug looked like it was a gap in the glaze? If it was you could put some low fire clear there and just fire it to low fire. That way you don’t have to worry about the outside changing and dripping.

Thanks Michele. It was so nerve wracking opening after all the prep gone into making the test tiles lol. So pleased! As soon as I'm home from this next work trip my plan is to finish putting everything back in the studio so I can then do a video. Before it gets messy again lol. Great idea about the mug with the small crack. But I actually allready refired it. Added loads of glaze in the crack, a bit more flux on the inside and refired. Fortunately it was a success and my son LOVED it when we took to Canada last week. Relief lol!!!

@@FarForestCeramics Oh yes you be sure to film the studio before it gets messy!! YEAH RIGHT! Messy studio. Too funny! lol. I’m so glad the mug turned out well. I was so afraid it would run alot. I’m soooo happy for you that the glazes turned out so well.

Thankyou. The turquoise blue has a delicacy about it which I really like. I think it works well on the while stoneware clay too. Definitely scaling that one up to try on a piece :)

@@FarForestCeramics wouldn't that be wonderful? My oldest and dearest friend died a short while ago, she was also a potter. Her husband has sorted out a whole load of pottery books for me and one includes recipes for making glazes. It would be such a fitting tribute if I could successfully make some of them. X

Although amaco/mayco have some off the shelf amazing glazes nothing brings more joy then make your one. But it is a lot on trial and error and dont be afraid to make crazy combinations. Can't wait for next video. Cheers

Jeanette, great job on the glazes and nice to see how happy you are with them! One thing concerns me though and you might want to check - I’ve tested Millenium white at cone 6.5 and it was 3.5% porosity, meaning it will leak if there’s any glaze defect. At cone 5.5 it’ll be even worse. It might be worth you popping a small unglazed pot (even just egg cup sized) into your next glaze firing and checking to see if it holds water (test over a few hours, on a bit of paper). X

Hi, Thanks so much for the advice. Ive never checked the porosity! Shows what a beginner I am!!! I will do that for sure. I've only been using Millenium White stoneware clay for the last 12 months and didn't realise that different clays can have different porosity. I did wonder if that was why some potters fire to cone 10? Thanks so much for this advice - I'm really keen to test this and see the results!

Not at all, I think it’s a minefield (esp in the UK where clays aren’t rated by cone!). Very few people I know bother to do the testing. I was having trouble with ‘seeping’ pots so over the last year I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of testing loads of UK clays and the results are very interesting. In general you want to be firing towards the top of the temperature range for the clay for it to be well vitrified but, just to make it more confusing, this isn’t always the case. If you’re looking for a white clay that’s good around cone 6 I’d recommend KGM or Earthstone ES10 as both are below 0.5% porosity. I will be watching with great interest to see how you get on with the Millenium White tests just in case I am completely wrong!! 😂

@@kirstinh3650 I can't tell you how helpful this is thankyou. Sorry for delay in replying - only just back from latest work trip. I originally tried KGM 2 years ago and enjoyed working with it, and when it was out of stock I tried Millenium and bulk bought when covid stocks were low. I have 'bags galore still to use up! However I do have one KGM left. I may throw with both and do the test on them at the same time. Not got any bisqued unglazed pieces so will have to wait a few days before I can do this. Earthstone ES10 - where do you purchase that? I've used Valentine Clays to date for purchasing my clay. I'm really keen to try a speckled toasted clay - any suggestions? I throw and hand build so ideally was looking for something that is versatile for both. Side question - I've been struggling to throw bigger with the millennium, all becomes very 'floppy' when getting taller despite me not using much water. Is this my inexperience or are some clays firmer to throw with when throwing bigger?

What color orange is on the funky mug? That mug is awesome! And what color blue is on the bottom of your plates and mugs? All your homemade glazes are beautiful!

Thankyou! The orange on the mug is Mayco Stroke and Coat Orange A Peel. The blue is an underglaze, Mayco Fundamentals Kings Blue UG-1

5:09 you are not going through all of them?? Noooo!! 😭😢 test tiles unloadings are always the most exciting unloadings. Edit: YES! You showed them all 🎉 And you are so excited about your test tiles. 😂 They are super beautiful!! Edit: snow flake crackle needs to be applied very very thick. A real thick layer of glaze. Otherwise you don't have this laminating effect.

LOL, and I thought I was the only one who got excited by opening a kiln containing test tiles! Just uploaded a follow up video (09) with all the recipes and close up videos of test tiles, Top and bottom shelf and comparing them to the results that Joe got. That was fascinating! Thanks so much for the tip on the snowflake crackle. To get it thick do I just dip for longer, or should I modify the viscosity to make the glaze thicker? This is where I dont know how best to adapt to get better results. I need to find a course to attend to learn more - feel so helpless now LOL

@@FarForestCeramics I have seen Hashimoto cook the crackled peace in black tea and I know you could use some kind of pigment. I think its Floating Colbalt. If you check out the follow up video I show each piece up close, with the name of the glaze and the Glazy.com recipe card. This one is first up in the video - that I reference as glaze number 9.

Yes, you made glazes! You did an excellent job but I knew you would. I don’t think I saw the pink - did I just miss it? I’m going to have to try some of Joe’s recipes. When you made the smaller foot ring, did you trim it that way or do something else?

I was blown away at the results! You did see the pink - however mine didn't come out pink , more like a deep raspberry! lol. The follow up video will have all the recipes, what they should have looked like versus what mine did look like. Fascinating process. I made the smaller foot ring with a new technique Ive never tried before. I really like how it turned out. I basically used a small trimming tool which had an oblong head (with slanted sides). I dragged this through a block of clay and it gave me a great shallow profile which I slip and scored onto the foot of the plate. I want to try this again as it gave a great subtle foot ring. I smoothed the joins on the wheel which also made it perfectly circular. Hard to explain in text - hope that makes sense. I'll try and do an Instagram reel of the process in the coming weeks when I try it again.

@@FarForestCeramics That made perfect sense, I think! I’m not sure which tool you mean but I have a small handle making tool that would probably work, too. I’ll have to try it. And I completely agree - making glazes really is fascinating!

I have some diamond core handheld extruder for handles, and I used that concept but in a smaller minute scale. Principle worked really great surprisingly!
