However, like you said, a simple observation and basics math is all these great people need. For instance, the distance between Syene and Alexandria, calculated at about 5000 stadia by trekkers in those days, and calculating the angle by dividing the length of the shadow of the pole by its height, which was about 7.2 degrees, he could calculate the circumference to be 40,000 km, less than 2% off the actual measurement we know now. Truly amazing!

In Indian astronomy, the concept of a spherical Earth was also prevalent, as seen in texts such as the Rigveda and the Puranas. It was Aryabhatta, a mathematician and astronomer, who stated that day and night were caused by the rotation of the earth on its axis. The distance between Alexandria and Syene is about 1070 km. Now the question is how did he measure the length of the shadow at such a distance at the same time? If he traveled from one place to another, many days would pass. If two different people were present at both locations, how were they communicating with each other? But this shadow difference is possible on flat surfaces as well. For instance, if you stand on flat floor of a room near bulb your shadow will be smaller and if you go to the other end your shadow will become longer in the same flate floor of the same room, same is for the Sun and two far apart points on Earth. (today we know that Earth is round but I think this experiment was not acceptable to prove that.)

Sir, no doubt that the earth is round, we all know it. Also I would not like to go against your experiment. But in your experiment, I noticed that the shadow of the right side pencil which is perpendicularly set on, extended on the carpet which is not the part of the surface of the earth. As a result, the shadow looks longer than that of the pencil on the left side. In fact, the shadow does not go beyond the surface of the earth. So the length of the shadow will be considered upto the visible range on the surface of the earth. Sir, if I wrong, please explain how. Then I will be able to get proper knowledge.
