The Lightest Solid on Earth (You won’t believe this exists)

Aerogel is the lightest and lowest-density solid in the world. It’s a gel composed of 99.8% air. Looking like frozen smoke, this material is almost as light as air itself. It’s only 1.74 grams.
It’s so light that even soap bubbles can lift it. Despite its weight, it can withstand extreme temperatures from -273 degrees Celsius to 650 degrees Celsius and provides a protection against heat unlike anything else on Earth.
However, even with a small pressure applied by my finger, the aerogel shatters into thousands of pieces and turns to dust.
But what’s surprising is that if I take those aerogel dusts and apply it to any surface, like my body, it becomes 100% hydrophobic. It makes me completely waterproof.
On top of that, this dust also forms new non-brittle foam-like aerogel composites, which can be utilized in extreme applications requiring protection.
Aerogels can be in different shapes, given that they are 99% air, can you guess the kind of sound would an aerogel make?
It’s like an empty can dropping onto a steel surface, very metallic. It’s quite different from what most of you might expect.
I’m at the Solarcore facility in Oregon, and I’ll be conducting experiments to test the aerogel’s most incredible properties.

Oh, then you can probably tell me one thing: Is there any research or even a chance of finding a similar material that is mechanically stable enough to survive enough pressure to maintain its shape even after slow evaporation of some of the air/filling gas and sealing by a coating layer, so that the final object it has a density below air @1 bar?

@@simonschonfeld1752 Sure, there are different type of aerofels made from materials with higher tensile strength, like Kevlar. You can even think of aerogel composites with fillers that would give higher mechanical properties. But you would probably need to go for nanoparticle or nanofibers.

ive been keeping up with aerogel but i learned a few notable things from this video, 1 being that it has a metallic sound when dropped, i almost couldn't believe that and thought the sound was edited in. and 2, i didn't know that's what aerogel looked like when soaked with water. awesome fun and informative video

Silica isn't good to breath in, in general. Ever heard of Silicosis? Chemically, it's not that disimilar to beach sand. I can't imagine getting it on your skin will harm you significantly- but who knows.

I think if we inhale, it will become power form. It contains just %1 amorphous silica. If eyes or mouth are exposed to this powder or it is breathed, cleaning with fresh water and air will be enough to help. And if it gets into the water sources, ultra-purification methods must be used because of the size of amorp silica (it is nano). If it is just pure silicon, digestion is not a problem. Inhalation on the other hand is an extreme danger. That full body stunt with zero face protection (and no clear tale about how the stuff was taken off eventually) was very careless. Otherwise, deeply encased in a product, it shouldn't pose any more risk than sand dunes or shattering glass (i'm always amazed how demolished buildings still have all the windows in place, just to live dangerously), it should be nothing compared to asbestos, which is so dangerous because of the almost arrow-like structure of its particles that burrow deeper and deeper into tissue WHILE being carcinogenic to begin with.

Fascinating stuff! I started reading through the comments, so many worried about this new fangled thing. I wouldn't want this scattered in the wind to impact the ecosystem, but I think if some powder were accidently inhaled it wouldn't have a way to really stick to mucus membranes the way it does to dry skin. Cough it out, blow your nose, swab it out. I'm not seeing a major health impact here for anecdotal exposure. I'd be very concerned with prolonged exposure in a factory for the same reasons coal miners lives are endangered by silicates. Ruhi I think you forgot one thing in your video. How do you get this micro powder off?? LOL I imagine this material could be very useful inside the glass housing for a lightbulb operating in sub zero temperatures as a barrier from a heat zone to a cold zone and extending the life of the glass exposed to extremes. I also wonder if this will be useful for next generation of firefighting gear that doesn't become a health hazard in use. I can only hope, as the world of firefighters are too often unsung heroes. It would be nice if science could protect them more.
