Can't believe this got recommended. Never would have thought some early 2000's British hip hop would get a reaction. The whole album "Original Pirate Material" is a lot of fun and worth a listen.

Love The Steets. Mike is a genius. This first album was all recorded by him at his bedroom. I think it's in the first song that in the intro if you listen really close you can hear his mom yelling at him to go eat. His storytelling is amazing. More The Streets please!

Mike Skinner is probably the only rapper that can rap off beat yet make it work, that is his style, for me he's more of a poet than a rapper.

The Streets was a HUGE deal for me. I was a teenager when this song/album hit and I loved hearing an MC like Mike Skinner do this clever spoken word rapping about everyday life. He made 5 albums between 2002 and 2011 and I think they're the perfect sound of that decade. "Make yourself at home We got diesel or some of that homegrown Sit back in your throne and turn off your phone 'Cause this is our zone Videos, televisions 64s, PlayStations"

yeah bro we’re gonna need more streets. i fuck with this dude so hard. dude’s style is inimitable and his viewpoint is unique as fuck. check out so more. dude makes bangers, tearjerkers, smoke songs, relationship songs, comedy songs...no one is like the streets. those first two albums are untouchable.

WHOA! You did The Streets! F*CK YEAH! I'm still a big fan of Mike Skinner. Other songs to check out by em: Blinded By The Lights Don't Mug Yourself Prangin Out Never Give In Fit But You Know It Momento Mori Can't Con An Honest John The Streets cadence needs some getting used to but that is what was so interesting about em when they popped up on the scene in 2002 and I was sooooooo here for it, they were ALL OVER nearly every music magazine, website, etc. Definitely worth getting into an digging deeper into their discography.

I like The Streets because it bridges a gap between music tastes. Personally grime is generally one of my most avoided genres, but I adore music that uses unconventional techniques and experimentation like jazz, IDM, psychedelic, noise, and art rock. I find I can really appreciate the delivery in songs like this and it helps me to get immersed in genres I usually wouldn’t. Alternatively, I feel like The Streets really helped bring more unconventional music to the spotlight and introduced a whole generation of Brits to the more avant garde side of music and how far you can really push the formulas of a genre.

I had the first album Original Pirate Material when it first come out (before all the charts hype). I gave a copy to my mate when i visited him in Barbados in 2005. He loved it. It was the soundtrack when we'd drive around the island LOUD. Along with Sunship's Almighty Father featuring Warrior Queen, The Bug's early flirting with dancehall and various mixtapes by Soundmurderer. What a holiday that was. The Streets' delivery style can be traced back to the MC's of a genre known as speed garage and then 2-Step. He was like the transition from an mc that compliments a live dj to that of a carrying a full album by himself with his own production with a 2 Tone influence. It was a breath of fresh air when it came out.

What most fans of The Streets/Mike Skinner don't realise is that there were originally a few other MCs in the group when it was based in Birmingham. Then Skinner signed a record deal in secret, told the other band members he had to move to London for family reasons and a few months later his album Original Pirate Material was released, containing a ton of lyrics, verses and hooks that were written and originally performed by the other members that he'd snaked. Great guy...
