1. Here's how the car upgrade system works. After each race you are given some cash and a choice of three cards. If the card has really bad stats you can trade it in for a token. When you have 3 they can be traded in for a random card with an engine part, brand or perk of your choosing (see 44:40). You can only select one of those fields to be guaranteed. So if you want a turbo, you lock that choice in and roll the dice on what brand and perk you get like extra boost, air time etc. And you can just buy a card from the available shop inventory that refreshes after maybe 1 in game day with the cash earned from the races. It's not that awful though it encourages you to grind races due to randomness of the cards and it's very jarring to put cards with random stats in cars rather than just buying engine parts. You can buy them with real money but nobody does that anyway. And that's not what he was doing. 2. You do not buy tires for your cars. It depends on which dealership you buy the car from and it also affects which races your car can be used for. The car bought at an off-road dealership already has dirt tires and higher suspension for off-road races. Drift dealership gives cars with drift tires and lowered suspension. Also not every car can be bought at all the dealerships and most of the lower tier cars can never reach 399 level of performance. There is a cap no matter how much you upgrade them. 3. The game actually has a catch up system (his "rubber banding") where the game makes the AI catch up to you out of nowhere to make the races more tense. It's the same system that was in NFS since Most Wanted. However choosing the difficulty determines how much of it there is. He chose normal but he doesn't get overtaken because of the catch up system. It's because Phil either applies no brakes and crashes into walls which slows him down (naturally) or he slams the brakes too hard and loses speed even more. He also doesn't take corners properly, turning way too hard and losing even more speed. The fastest line through a corner is the one that allows the straightest path. I don't even have a driving license but I learned how to do it in Gran Turismo 4 driving school ffs. Phil needs to look up the term "racing line". 4. Even in off-road races you still need to stick to the track. Going outside of the track you go into the deep sand or dirt which slows you down. The track part is there for a reason. It's not a cross country race. 5. Natalia's Pagani Huayra is literally a rocket ship compared to his delivery van Camaro. And his complaint about having to spend money to improve his car is really dumb. It's almost like that's the point of the game. Upgrade your low performance car to win races easier and then earn money to buy a better car and then upgrade that one too. He's hoarding money like he thinks he can somehow transfer it to his bank account to pay for his massive debts. And the way he wins is the same way he wins in souls-like games. Brute forces his way through, fails many times, complains that it doesn't work the way he wants to, sh*t on the game until it eventually works through cheese tactics or blind luck. I have a feeling that's how he went through his life.

Honestly the funniest thing about this playthrough that even in a virtual world where he has oodles of cash to spend he is still a cheap bastard and refuses to upgrade his cars.

I'm pretty sure from what I understand, rubberband AI, which far as I know isn't utilised in this game, exists to tailor game difficulty to player skill. Which means unless you park your car they shouldn't be able to leave you in the dust, just as much as they'll always catch up. Personally I'm not a fan because while it's intended to keep races feeling exciting, I feel it prevents players feeling a sense of mastery if they do in fact get good. In some extents it may have its place. Phil of course uses it as a cheap excuse for why his opponents go faster than he does... he gets really paranoid in this though, I could possibly believe that obstacles only spawn within a certain radius of him, possibly not within a certain range of opponent cars to avoid them spawning inside each other, but... why does he have to assume the devs programmed a powerful AI just to tactically place specific obstacles purely to make the player lose... The worst thing is, he never turns round and says this BS is angry venting, he seems to actually believe his easily disproven nonsense... like invisible rocks.

Natalia Nova is like me when it comes to racing games. (kinda same personality) and i could see Phil trying to make me crash or trying to cheat his way to win

I think this game more than any other (even PS1 Spiderman) shows his bias. He even states he's not going to upgrade his car and try to constantly cheese her out, and still thinks he's valid in complaining. I'm surprised he didn't start getting complaints from his fans about the constant restarts. I know I would've been screaming at him to just upgrade and stop wasting everyone's time constantly restarting trying to glitch her out. And then get banned for calling him out, only for him to do what I said a few tries later.

That was hilarious in how bare faced it was. Yeah... I'm not going to upgrade my car for this race, I was planning to cheat anyway so why bother? It's like if a boxer said they were laying off training because they planned to put a brick in their glove, without the slightest hint of, realising how it sounds out loud. Unreal
