About the whole TikTok situation I 100% percent agree they did not respect him. They were very rude. Every time they asked a question he would go to answer it and give all the details and they would cut him off, but TikTok got the last word in because they posted on TikTok themselves. The CEO of TikTok posted a video answering everybody’s questions Uninterrupted and I am so happy about it and I agree with quite a few other people in TikTok that have commented about it and they’re trying to get rid of tick-tock is because they always try to get rid of something that is good and popular and fun that they don’t understand because technically all social media does the same thing as TikTok with your information they are all monitoring they’re all using your information it is no different. That’s literally what social media it is monitoring everything you do to see what to promote and what you like and don’t like and following your algorithm and they’re just mad because it’s from another country. If this was before 2020 it wouldn’t have even made it this far in the legal system and I am not the only one that knows that or thinks that

I thought the issue with TikTok is that in their terms of service you agree to gives them the right to go through anything on your phone and use it. Think intellectual property, corporate security, confidential documents, etc. So, if you have the app on your phone and a work email app on your phone they can go through that information and use what they want. For instance if you are writing a book, technically if access to it is on your phone, they could go in, find that manuscript and publish it as their own. That's why we keep hearing about the app being banned from government devices. Also, in gov hearings like this each of the committee members has a set amount of time they can ask questions, so people that give long winded replays are eating up their time. They cut them off as soon as they give a sufficient answer so they can get as many questions answered as possible. It's a strategy for the person testifying to give longer than necessary answers so they can run out time.

It's also an issue because businesses in China have way less protection from the government. The government could in theory see the data as valuable and demand it from the company. So TikTok collecting data is a little bit scarier than Facebook or Google having everyone's data cause there is a bit more protection for American companies.

So, the big issue is people connecting to Wi-Fi in places they aren’t supposed to- soldiers stationed at secret bases for example, they open TikTok and now that company has data showing where that location is, there was an athletic app not too long ago that got into trouble for the same thing people in the military were using it to track their workouts and the global map was popping up with their data showing where they were and people were able to use that data to find locations nobody was supposed to know about, that’s the true risk with it, those on base can’t be trusted to not open it and use it while stationed there. People don’t take the “no phones” thing seriously when there are reasons some individuals in certain positions should not carry or open their cellphones. Does that mean everyone should lose access to it? Of course not, but the risk is there. And the whole “well look at Meta” as a defense for data tapping is the worst argument ever honestly, “so what, they do it too” or “but we aren’t AS bad” neither of those help TikToks case here you don’t rid one evil with another it’s like Spider-Man pointing at Spider-Man meme but real life.

So that's actually not even a possibility, technically. I'm not sure about the ToS, I would have to read them for myself to see if they do require that consent, but on a technical standpoint, TikTok cannot really access other app's data. (So I've been working in app development for almost ten years now, but my expertise is more geared towards iOS (iPhones) and the Cloud, so I'll stick to those for my examples). On your iPhone, when you install an app, it is isolated from the rest by a sandboxing environment. We call it sandboxing, as an image to show that each app has their own little sandbox, and they can't play in each other's. TikTok cannot just "read" your emails. It cannot access other files, other app's data. Whenever an app wants to access data that another app holds, if that data *can* be shared, the user *has* to give explicit consent, otherwise the system (i.e. the phone) simply won't allow them to share their sandbox. (The possibility that TikTok would have been able to hack those securities is more than unlikely considering their popularity and the scrutiny they would have gotten by the phone constructors in regard to their source code). Moreover, one of the solutions TikTok's CEO explained they came up with is to store the user's data in the US, and have an independent American company be in charge of securing that data and monitoring access. I don't have the fine prints, but based on what I've heard, any "sensible" information (and from what I understand, it's not more than any other social media app gathers) from American users is stored in the US and firewalls are in place to prevent any access to that data from foreign authorities. IMHO, no social media app (American-based or not) should be considered "safe" in national security contexts (in the hands of highly ranking government officials for example). But a ban to all users of a nation on the basis of the app being born in an other country, regardless of all the efforts made by that company to submit to local (i.e. American) regulations and to protect their users, that's not fair to the users (and to the many many American employees of that company either). (BTW, I'm Canadian, so... If I misunderstood something from the hearings because of the way things work in America... Sorry eh?)

My English class was talking about the TikTok ban and my teacher explain something I found interesting. Our government probably doesn’t have no idea what TikTok is. TikTok is more popular than Facebook and Instagram which is owned by Mark Zuckerberg who is a lobbyist. Apps in general, if allowed permission, are data mining the user. They combine all of the data online they know about you. Then it is sold. To any entity that wants to know more about you. Now, not only is all of that data combined. They are doing the same thing to almost everyone around you. That combined with you location data means they essentially know just about everything. In the case of Tik Tok, the Chinese government is collecting that data. Now, why would they want to do that? What is the motivation. Data does actually cost money to store in large quantities. So, I don't use the app. The US government believes it is abusing its permissions, I.e. listening when not allowed, etc.

Hey Colleen I think in regards to TikTok it’s important to remember that Facebook / Meta has spent a lot of money to lobby against TikTok rather than develop their Platforms to be competitive. Facebook also has elected officials on both sides as investors who stand to lose a lot of money. Facebooks audience is older, as I’m sure you know, and is not being replaced by younger generations. You are correct that congress has no idea what they are talking about. They are in my opinion they are acting as an arm of meta, not in the best interest of the American people. Facebook and twitter were both used to manipulate our society and our elections, so as far as I am concerned the true threats are our domestic ones. The best thing we can do right now for those of us in the states is to call and write our reps and demand they don’t push this through. My background is in social media marketing, tech and cyber security, this whole thing has been so concerning to watch.

So I'm kinda scared to share this opinion because I know I might be the only one who has it but this topic truly concerns me. I think it's important to remember that the Chinese government is not our friend. Its one thing for your own country to (annoyingly) collect your personal information so they can advertise to you. But I don't want China knowing how depressed we all are, for example, by looking at how many people are subscribing to "you're gonna get through this" type content on TikTok. I think it's literally just like stranger danger. If someone has to do god knows what with my information without my knowledge, I'd rather it be my own country.

So I agree with what you're saying, but I get to a different conclusion. Because foreign enemies could influence our elections through American companies, it's an EVEN bigger threat to American democracy that a Chinese company has so much data and influence that the Chinese government could even more easily control than Russia could control Facebook or Twitter. In a nutshell, social media is still for the most part the wild west, and one of the biggest players (Tik Tok), is a Chinese owned company that does NOT follow the rules of the rest of them.

They seem rude because they have only a minute or 2 to ask their questions, so if the person being questioned begins to waffle, they'll interrupt. Some politicians will ask questions as a performative point so they can use a sound bitefor their campaigns. TikTok definitely gathers info for the CCP... My husband is in cyber security. He could go nuts talking about it...He said Tik Tok could be a problem but so are SO many other apps, they shouldn't be banned but instead made an example on how to have better security. Hey Colleen, Answering the TikTok question: I will say that it’s not only about “spying” but also “propaganda” specifically interfering in elections. The CEO of TikTok did say that they have the technology to spy but they “pink promise” they won’t…. Which do we really want to believe someone who doesn’t have Americas interests at heart. This is why (I think) the politicians were so upset. Also back on the propaganda issue- remember the Russian collusion debacle? Well there was substantial evidence that Russia did post propaganda on Facebook and other social media outlets which caused the government to freak out and get tied up for 2 years asking whether or not the president of the United States was behind all this. Anyway I hope this helps (but doubt you’ll read it), enjoy watching your videos :)

And Uncle Coco is such an incredible uncle to Flynn, Maisy, and Wesley! 💗 And I can answer your question Colleen, Apple, Amazon, Google, etc. are U.S. owned companies, whereas TikTok is owned by a Chinese company and our government is concerned about the Chinese government having access to all of American’s personal information, as well as being able influence Americans via the app to push their own narratives and agenda. i have no idea about the tiktok ban situation. but personally i really don’t like tiktok 😭 i’ve noticed a lot of misinformation and stigma is spread in general (not even related to politics). which i’m sure is biased because most social media is like that. but i personally don’t like it so i wouldn’t mind if it was banned 😭

I remember in high school during lunch time people always had those stereotypical cliques where they would all eat together, but I didn't have that so I always snuck into the small auditoriums where our school choir and band practiced. I ate there alone instead of being alone in front of a lot of people, and honestly it was pretty sad. Eventually I made friends and we started to eat in the auditorium together (it wasn't really allowed but no teachers went to those auditoriums during lunch so nobody found out lol). I feel like Colleen and I would have been very good friends if we met in high school because I used to write stories and play the violin so we'd be like creative kweens or sumn. But that's just me

Our phones do that in general, that’s what it means when it says if you want to accept cookies and even the iPhones ask you when you download an app if you want it to track you or not. You’d have to go to your phone and check bc my phone had all the settings to track even though I didn’t do it myself. So I think it’s silly to just blame one app, when it’s all apps and iPhones. It’s like trying to ban iPhone, they won’t do it though. So i just think they definitely should do more research about it and to actually show us proof but I personally think any use of the internet allows us to put our privacy at risk to be tracked, etc.

yes all apps do it - its AI. but TikTok is owned by China, the others are American. and when it gets all your phone info from all Americans it can access information it woukdnt get any other way. its spying from China. thats the difference.

The thing about the TikTok ban is they know a large amount of people speak out on tik tok especially lately about political issues and ways to fight for what you believe in and speak up. The government doesn’t like when people speak out against them so they want to take away a platform that allows for that.

As a political junkie who watches congressional hearings all the time, yes it pretty normal for the representatives to be snarky like that. They only have 5 minutes so often they’ll use their time to just rant, or ask very pointed questions that they then don’t allow the person testifying to respond to, so they can move on to the next pointed rhetorical question 😂 Sometimes it’s warranted because the person testifying is trying to sloooowly answer questions in a very vague manner, hoping to run out the clock. In those cases I’m happy when the Congressperson “reclaims their time” because you know the witness is being purposely evasive. I haven’t watched the TikTok hearing yet, but I’ll check it out!

Hi Colleen!! About your questions on congree people- one of my close friends works on Capitol Hill on staff for a Congress person, and they said that the TV show Veep is scarily accurate. So, yes, I guess congress people are just generally that snarky and rude lol😂😂

I don't personally use tik tok but I know it's a wonderful thing for many people. My brother uses it and said that in the terms of agreement when you sign up, it says the have a right to watch you and I think that's where this whole thing got started. I don't know much about it myself either though so don't quote me. I did see some of the clips from the case though and it did seem like they were perhaps being a little snarky and may have not known much about the app 🤷🏼‍♀️ I don't know.

One thing I find kind of funny about the TikTok situation is that the congress people (or what ever they are called) really outed themselves that they don’t understand how the algorithm of TikTok works. The algorithm shows you videos of things you search for and like. So when the for you page is filled with underage girls dancing provocatively it says a lot about you as a person.
