This channel is a gem. So much easily digested, important information, presented in a lighthearted and fun way. Just great for people like me who never kept a spider (yet), and is outright scared of screwing up keeping them healthy. As a cat keeper I want them all the best possible, and if I get spider, I want them to be kept as best as possible too. These videos must never disappear, so I hope you have an alternate plan if YT falters for some reason. Quite a few channels have been hacked recently and lost their channel, so please be careful! We love you! 🧡

It's taught me a lot and that's really valuable to both newbies like me but also people in the hobby in general. I would love it if you could do a video on venom and explain the various species and potency of venom, and what might happen if your accidently bitten.

Thank you for your great videos.🤗 I'm always watching your videos and never stop learning new things about the T's. The thing about the ventilation makes sense, but I never thought of that so much. Yes, the T's need fresh air, but I thought also that a few holes had done this job. That the warm air and the humidity rise to the top was never in my mind. Since 2021, I have myself a few T's (new and old world) Spiders and love them. They are beautiful creatures. Since I watch your videos, my handling with the T's is nicer and more relaxed than before. I think my T's can feel it also. They also became more relaxed. Thank you so much. We can learn a lot from you! 😇

I like the way you stress environment over regimen. If there's too much moisture, you're going to end up steaming your spider like a lobster.. Giving the spider a choice of how wet it wants to be (like the spider in the enclosure that you "hosed down") seems to be a great way to go, since they would make those choices for themselves in the wild.

He’s right. Humidity is the killer of Tarantulas . Especially when it’s hot out and people think your spiders need to have enclosures sprayed down. If you like to spray them down then you have to have huge amounts of ventilation.

Another very, very good indicator that your enclosure has the right humidity is the supposedly very "humidity fussy" avic avic deciding that they are more than happy to go through a full moult cycle and come out of it looking perfect. if you don't know if the conditions are right, your spider definitely does. Observe your spider, learn what is normal for them, watch for changes and if you see changes, make the necessary changes to bring your spider back to normal. Keeping exotic pets is first and foremost an observer sport. Let them tell you what is right and wrong. Peace!

I appreciate you explaining enclosures and husbandry based on the enclosure. I'm a reptile keeper and I have just carried over my reptile husbandry over to my tarantulas. There are a lot of similarities. My question is about the screen tops. Some tarantula you tubers claim that tarantulas can get their feet caught in the screens. Have you ever experienced a tarantula getting it's foot caught in the screen top?

Hi Dave and camera lady. Thanks for the advice regarding ventilation. I have kept tarantulas for many years on and off, now very much on! I have been struggling with this matter of ventilation. At the moment I have a large cupboard which is insulated and heated and I keep my eight legged friends there. I will soon be getting a purpose made 10ft by 10 ft building for them. All my enclosures have mesh tops but the ones I have my high humidity spiders in like my lasiodora parahybana I took to putting a plastic sheet on the top to keep the humidity up. I have now removed this as I see it is not advantageous for my spiders. I am sure I am as guilty as many others in keeping the enclosures a little too wet. It’s good to get the lowdown from the guru! Thanks mate and thanks camera lady for your continuing great filming. Regards Dennis

Hey dave I would consider myself stil a newbie in the hobby as I've been keeping t's since last april and from what I understood from this video is that : If the enclousure actually can dry out then it has a good ventilation or If the enclosure just keeps looping the water and recycling it is bad ventilation. I myself am In a country where the actual spider enclousures are expensive so I can only afford plastic or braplast boxes and they do fine i'd say. However my most humid demnading specie is a Neoholothele incei or H.maculata so my results may not matter. Anyways thank you for the video and God bless you Dave. Love from Poland

I keep my fuzzybutt in with my plants. He/she has done very well. Ventilation was the furthest thing from my mind in deciding where to keep it. I just thought she liked so amazing surrounded by my jungle and was safe from my cats. Thanks again for the awesome information!!! Congratulations on the 90k. No channel more deserving!!! Some potential topics to cover: 1. How to keep different types of Spiders in different types of enclosures ex: how to keep moisture dependent fossorials in high ventilation vs low/ no ventilation, same with non moisture dependent spiders(arboreal, Terrestrial), and "dry" Spiders. Kind of a continuation of this video with explicit examples 2. Highlight species that are identical or nearly identical in care ex: Pokies, Avics, Psalmopepoeus are often thought to need the same husbandry. Same with Brachypelma and Grammastola species

THANK YOU!!! I’ve been trying to teach people this for a few years and they act like I don’t know what I’m talking about. Air circulation or lack there of is key in husbandry. In my T shed there’s either a fan, a/c or heat going so there’s always circulation. I use different size water dishes depending on what sp and what enclosure they are in. In my exo Terra’s I keep 5oz soufflé dishes for water, for my juvies in the plastic enclosures a 2oz deli cup and for slings in 32 oz deli, a water bottle cap. The majority of my 42 T’s are arboreals. Avics, pokies and tapis

Back in the 80s, when I started keeping spiders, there was very little decent information available. Ventilation wasn't a topic that came up much, if at all?! I found avicularia to be very difficult to keep back then. As an aside, I have just checked the humidity in my living room, by my houseplants. It is 62% and I haven't even sprayed my walls😅

Thank you so much for this informative video! My Curly Hair is in a large Tarantula Crib with Reptisoil filled halfway up. The substrate had some moisture when I put it in the enclosure, but it is on not what I would consider damp. Humidity gauge at soil level is reading around 90% and upper level where my T typically hangs out is reading 80%. She seems happy and my common sense says conditions are good, but the high gauge readings are freaking me out a bit. Thoughts?

Some comments, born from a few decades of keeping arboral Pythons and associated learning. Those rainforest biomes are tricky for the unwary. Yes, up there in the canopy it rains, very heavy, and very often. But it doesn't rain constantly, and (as its up there in the canopy) it dries out pretty quickly also. Meaning, even though the animal is a "rainforest critter" it is actually living in a drier and cooler mircoclimate than might be thought. It is many things up there, but it is probably very rarely damp. With rain forest snakes/reptiles it is good practice to have the humidity peak high, but dry off over the day so its never actually damp or wet. Keeps the mold down also. But even then the humidity is not really super critical. The added wrinkle of course is that on top of the rainforest being cooler and drier than you might think (over a 24 hour period), the spiders are themselves tucked away in old trees/webs/nests etc. So its even is even harder to predict specifics. I dont know if any studies are out there measuring the exact conditions in a Pokie/Avic nest. But think we can surmise that given Daves beauties are doing well here then the microclimate they are dwelling in the wild is probably quite a bit less humid than Panama, the Caribean and tropical S America (as per wiki) are in general. Hopefully that all made sense. Cheers.

That's exactly my thought through process after being the average Joe raising these awesome creatures unless you have screen tops screen holes in the side and a breeze through your house is the ventilation that you guys are talking about when I hear you talking about cross ventilation I have only been in this game for 4 years 90% of my stuff is still in the plastic Tupperware cups with little melted tack holes in it you have to try to understand the creature like Mr d is saying if we locked each other in a sealed room we'd use up all the oxygen it's not how these creatures work for instance the diving bell spider every once in a while they have to redo the oxygen level in their little bubble underneath the water I would love to understand how they breathe even more

ALWAYS appreciate educational tips on the subject! I keep the ceiling fan on in my spider room, doesn't that help achieve the coveted "cross ventilation"? Also, when you have a less ventilated enclosure, that usually makes it so you have to water less often... correct? So the Real question is... where is the best balance 🤔 If I have a high humidity dependent species, can I not just give it less ventilation so that I can keep it on the same schedule as an arid species with more ventilation? O_o

Ventilation and circulation has a lot to do with the type of soil you're using as well in my experience if you have a lot of peat moss smagna moss chopped up with regular potting soil that has vermiculite pearlite and all them extra additives like say cork bark all those materials keep different moisture contents if you have a really good soil that holds saturation that's not probably good for your more dryer species regardless of the ventilation that soil is still going to hold that moisture and that is the reason that you don't need big cages for these big tarantulas that dig holes into the Earth All you need to do is give them the right moisture at that depth and have them be able to come back and forth to that moisture to that darkness to that heat that they need so they can self regulate come on people use your brains

I don’t spray any of my spiders 😳 They are all in great condition !! Once a week I put some water on the ground, not a lot & do keep my water dishes filled 🕷️ Thank You !! if in doubt go on the dry side 😊

I just walked outside and seen all these teal blue green eyes staring back at me and walked up on a pair with my headlamp and it was a big ol Wolf Spider, I then walked away and seen why they are there, my yard in a breeding ground for roaches, I seen one running away from my feet as I walked and I decided to catch her, she was a fat female with a blackish abdomen I then walked back up towards the big wolf spider and threw her towards the wolf spider and as soon as the roach hit the ground behind the spider, the wolfie turned around and grabbed the roach as quick as lightning, then I went inside and washed my hands for 5min...lol

I have a bit of a challenge because I live in the desert. Even with a humidifier I have trouble keeping my house above about 27% which makes keeping individual enclosures humid enough quite the juggling act.

I have one question: As an oldie computer builder, I got a ton of of fans, with controllable speeds and such. Is, let's say, a slow moving 80 mm fan (with protection of course), sucking in or pushing out depending on the cabinet a terrible idea? It would certainly create a forced draft.
@daveslittlebeasties
@daveslittlebeasties 3 ай бұрын
As long is the spider is not in a constant draft it should be fine

Hey Dave I'm planning on making a planted enclosure with very little ventilation for a blondi that I have. The humidity will be very high for the tropical plants. Do you think manual ventilation eg. Fanning the enclosure down once a day or if needs be installing a small pc fan will be sufficient? I'd love to hear your thoughts 🙏
@daveslittlebeasties

I keep all the theraphosa and none are in sealed enclosures all have good ventilation so long as your substrate holds moisture they will be. fine theres nom need for really high humidity this will just cause a stale environment 👍

@@daveslittlebeasties thanks for the reply Dave, I'm a big fan! The humidity is for the tropical plants, that's the issue. There is some ventilation it's an exo terra with a plexiglass lid and a couple of holes. I'm just wondering if airing it out once a day will prevent stagnation in your opinion?

Yeah then big plastic tubs that he's talking about right here that has so much surface area for dehydration of your soil touching on my basis of what your soil has in it this type of cage that has that plastic top will dehydrate quicker than anything else but I still stand it's what's in your soil as well

I have a number of small ish tubs w8 d8 h3.5 inch with 12 2.5 mm holes around the sides and 29 2.5 m holes in the lid. The tub doesn’t dry too quickly but at the same time no stagnant air. The other tub same tub slightly different vents this time with 18 2.5mm holes around the sides same number Of holes in the lid as the other tub. Note those side vents are lower down not to close to the top vents. Using a stack effect or chimney effect type method heat rises and Drew’s cooler air through the lower vents. If I was to reduce the amount of holes in the lid or top vent this would give me stagnant air say 20 2.5mm in the lid. I’ve just picked up a haplopelma Himalayana

I stopped spraying my two avics over a week ago. Summer is here and the room is at 80% humility. They are in Zilla Arboreal cages so ventilation isn't that good. They seem to be doing fine to me.

Hi Dave, long time watcher, short time keeper. Recently rehoused a Trinidad Chevron juvi into a 20x20x30 acrylic enclosure. The soil i used was moist, not soaked in the slightest, however it does seem like there is a lot of humidty due to a thin layer of mould growing. What should i do? Thanks guys!
