I love how the style of this channel's videos has never changed, all the videos have looked the same for years, if you watch a random video, you probably wouldn't be able to guess which year it's from without looking at the upload date.

You're right about that, and the style of the videos works. But maybe long time followers also would like the channel to contain videos that takes things beyond entry level. Most of the videos are only interesting for absolute beginners, and I guess the rest mainly hangs on for the occasional tips about vinyl releases.

A receiver includes an integrated amplifier which is a combination of a preamplifier and a power amplifier. I think the additional preamp you are referring to is the magnetic cartridge preamp for the turntable. A receiver is called so because it is an integrated amplifier combined with a tuner. There are also stand alone integrated amplifiers that do not include tuners. They are not receivers yet you can still connect all the other devices including a stand alone tuner.

what you have to keep in mind is that many systems have the preamp already built in, if you then connect an additional one, the signal can become too strong, so there can be destortions and the system can be damaged

Good video, but an amplifier has most of what you attribute to receivers. It is a receiver because it has a radio tuner section that can receive over the air radio signals. You used to be able to buy separate amplifiers and tuners, and the tuner went through the amplifier like any other component. It made sense to integrate both of these devices into a single receiver unit.

Since I bought my equipment I have been continuously impressed by the quality/$ of the Edifier R1280D active speakers l paired with my Fluance RT85 (+ Fluance pre-amp.) I had always used vintage receivers (The Fisher 125, Hitachi SR-604, etc) but got tired of the aging potentiometers and switches constantly needing attention so last fall I picked up an Onkyo TX-8220 to use with my TT (Pioneer DJ 500PXL), dual cassette deck and cd changer (also both Pioneer) and I've been pretty impressed by it. The "A" speakers are a pair of Fluance SX6W's and I ran wires from the "B" connectors to the high gain audio inputs of a powered 10" Polk Audio subwoofer and it absolutely rocks. The Onkyo accepts banana plugs for all of its speaker terminals which was another plus for me and is how I have it wired. I have many tube radios I've restored to operation for that warm tube sound and someday I'll get a tube amp for my component system but until then I'm very satisfied with my current setup.

Good evening from England, again good video chap, I must commend you on your clear presentation style, and logic when i was selling hifi, stereo receivers were a cost and space cutter and you got a remote too usually. But they were hifi like yours, no mod cons. Bluetooth was just a viking from history usb was a typing error. I have 3 receivers all multi channel. as such, I am about to dust down my mid 1970s Toshiba Sa504 quadraphonic receiver and play the couple of quadraphonic lps i have . The Onkyo TXSR608 was bought cheapo as a HDMI switching box really to replace the flagging Marantz SR5300, which was bought because it had loads and loads and loads of audio inputs and replaced my beloved Marantz Model 1090. As ever its only your ears that matter. Keep the fidelity high

It's probably worth mentioning that it's not actually what is normally called a pre-amp that's used for turntables, it's specifically a phono stage pre-amp. That then connect into either a receiver line level input, or an integrated amplifier, (both of these types contain a normsl pre-amp and an amplifier) or if you have an amplifier that doesn't contain a built in normal pre-amp, you would connect your phono stage pre-amp to the normal pre-amp, which then connects to the main amplifier. As you mentioned though, some receivers and integrated amplifiers also contain a dedicated phono stage pre-amp built in, in which case you would forgo connecting your turntable to a separate phono stage pre-amp and just connect it directly to the decicated phono connection on your receiver or integrated amplifier. To confuse matters further, there are different types of turntable styli and cartridges. Moving magnet, (MM) and moving coil, (MC). Most phono stage pre-amps, including those built into receivers and integrated amplifiers, have the ability to properly boost the signal from MM type cartridges, but many can't sufficiently boost the signal from most MC type cartridges. That's because most MC cartridges give a weaker signal to begin with and need additional signal boosting. If you intend to use an MC type cartridge, do additionsl research before buying a phono stage pre-amp, to make sure that it has the ability to boost MC cartridges. To confuse matter even more, there are different types of MC cartridge too, which produce different signal levels and can often require different boost settings on the phono stage pre-amp. Obviously if you're just starting out, there's a lot to consider, but don't let that put you off. Just do a bit of research and ask lots of questions. If you are just stsrting out though, I'd recommend starting with MM type cartridges, because they are far cheaper to buy, the phono stsge pre-amps tend to be cheaper and you'll likely find them easier overall to get set up. Enjoy.

My way of looking at it: 1. Receiver - For VHS / DVD + Music 2. Amplifyer: Music 3. Pre Amp: Support to Amp or Reciever with more power. This way of looking at it works from the 80's and up. In the 70's it was a amp that could recieve radio. That radio bonus there 80s - 90's brothers also can do, but the destinction between a amp and a reciver were more of: home theater (Reciever) vs home hifi (Amp) settup. If you have no respect for money, or you just have a abundence of it you can go for Pre Amp HiFi setups. Well, this is hoe i categorize HiFi gear. And if you have a late 1980's or early 1990's Reciever and connect a HiFi (4 head or more) VHS player with it's dedicated audio out, magic will happen 💛

Basically, a 'Receiver' is so called, because it is essentially a radio set, completely contained in the one unit (except the passive loudspeakers). But it is a radio set with the facility to connect other audio sources. Rather like the very old tube radios that had a 'gram' input, back in the day.

I thought so, too. Except it is the multi-input switchability that makes it a receiver, than actually having to have a Built in tuner. In the 1980's when stack units were the rage. Tuners were available, outside of receivers. [Integrated amps: pre-amp/switchability, to the beefier Power amp section.] MacIntosh sold power amps mostly, And pre-amp/line level switchers, equalizers.

Informative video, however you didn't mention that receivers have AM and FM tuners in them to receive radio signals. Some may only have FM. What you have described could be amplifier as well. As for just going with active speakers, it works, yes, however much better quality can be had with a good amp or receiver and far opens up your choice of speakers. It's subjective, I know, just my 2 cents.

Tubes introduce a form of distortion that many find appealing. Sometimes identified as warmth to the ear. Really just a different sound sent to the speakers. When early CDs sounded very harsh in the upper frequencies I would attach the player to a tube amp and it improved the sound to my ears. With modern players and digital media I find I don't need to do that any more.

I actually use a ‘microset’ (others refer to it as a mini system, it’s basically a reciever with a built-in CD/DVD player), te Philips MCD708. Its CD/DVD player, however, is broken. It only has 2 RCA inputs, so I ended up buying a separate 4-way switchbox to be able to plug everything in. The Sony PS-J20 turntable, Packard Bell iMedia S2870 desktop PC and the Raspberry Pi 3B which I use as an internet radio are connected to this switchbox, leaving 1. port empty. The Yamaha KX-260RS cassette deck has its line out connected to the mini system, and its input connected to the switchbox with a special cable, one end of which has a male and female side, so the switchbox is also connected directly to the amp through another input. To the speaker output are connected a pair of speakers from the Philips MCD395 mini system.

The difference between an amplifier and a receiver, is that a receiver has a tuner/radio built in whereas an amplifier doesn’t. It doesn’t have anything to do with the amount of inputs.

Random question for you, I have a ton of records from my favorite band that have custom inner sleeves, should I attempt placing plastic sleeves into the custom inner sleeves? Or should I just put the plastic inner sleeve next to the custom inner sleeve?

So I have a 1970s Era sony receiver and just bought an audio technica direct drive turntable. The turntabale has a built in pre amp so should I run the turn table through the phono output on the amp or switch on the pre amp in the turn table and plug it into the line out on the amp? I hope that sorta makes sense.

A receiver has a built in tuner for listening to the radio, an integrated amp, which is what I have, has a pre- amp and a power amp. Separates is where the the tuner, pre-amp , and power amp are separate components. I have a Yamaha A-S801.

I actually have managed to have two vinyl records delivered over the past few days or so but separate days apart - Canadian riot grrrl-shoegaze-dream pop twins Softcult's Zodiac EPs on 12" black vinyl and a limited edition 12" pink and green swirl vinyl of Denton TX-based pop punk band House Parties' Tiny Rooms EP. This has really been my lucky two weeks of vinyl!

So if I have a record player with a built in pre amp, and just got brand new (passive) speakers for christmas, and I only care about playing vinyl, should I try and return these speakers and get ones with a built in amp? Or are there cheap receiver options if you only have one input you care about?

I have an odd setup. I have no room for speakers, I wanted a turntable changer, and wireless. Plus, my record stand is an old, repurposed sidewalk newspaper vending machine. :) Thankfully there are holes in the metal on the back of the machine. So, I have a 1980s Technics SL-B500 on top with wires going inside to a Rolls VP29 preamp that's mounted via industrial Velcro. Then I have that outputting back out of the newspaper machine/stand to a Bluetooth transmitter that's Velcro'd to the back of the machine. All power cords run to a power strip. To keep things clean, the cables run through a cable track attached to the back of the newspaper machine, and the power strip is in a power strip box. So, I open the power strip box and flip it on, and then my record play can output to my TV's soundbar via Bluetooth. I know, I know, a soundbar!? Bluetooth with vinyl? I'm no audiophile but am really nostalgic for the physical medium and tactile nature of the whole process of playing records. The music sounds just fine to me. I will say, in a new apartment (If I'm ever that lucky), I want to have a side table on each side and switch to some active bookshelf speakers. *fingers crossed*

Or you could have turntable with Phono preamp out, to powered speakers, or a headphone system with a headphone amp to march. That can keep things a modest budget and upgradable with speakers and a receiver or integrated amp and other components later. Or.. (I'm old and have some vintage (late 80s early 90s, nothing from my first system) gear and some new and always want a full size stack of components.) Integrated amp NAD 3400.

A very informative detailed video for the beginner! I've been into audio systems since the mid 70s. My present system consist of a Yamaha 7.2 A/V receiver, a Music Hall turntable, a Pioneer RT-1020L reel to reel tape deck, two Tascam CD player/recorders. And my speaker system is a Klipsch Synergy 7.1 system. I have my Yamaha A/V receiver connected to a 55 inch TV. I will probably have to replace my Shure M97xE cartridge soon, but not sure which would be best for my Music Hall USB-1 turntable. Any suggestions?

Are you dubbling LPs to tape and or to CD? From (now discontinued) TEAC TN570 oprtical out directly into TEAC CD Recorder am dubbing LPs. But I had to put phono-pre out on the turntable or else it would not work. Sounds good to me. I can use phono in to my integrated amp to go to Recorder but I wanted to by pass that and also not to edit files on PC. I put 2 LPs per CD most of the time, and save most of CD and rip them too.
