I heard that a young woman dressed as a Maiko or Geisha who walks in public as discrete as possible would be a real Maiko/Geisha. A woman dressed as one who doesn't mind having her picture taken or maybe even poses for a tourist. Well those are Japanese girls who like attention..

Although as a Niigata resident for six years, I learned that Geisha/Geiko are called “Geigi” in Niigata. So I guess there is another term for them in Japanese dialects..

Doesn't surprise me. I think Nagasaki is similar. Teaching students in Nagasaki for five years, no one knows what a 'geisha' is, sometimes they know 'geiko.' They know what a 'maiko' is, but everyone knows the managing company for the prefecture called the Nagasaki Kenban.

I love how many videos you have on geisha. I’m learning so much! I always thought the bell sound came from the hair ornaments, not the shoes- that’s SO COOL. I’m curious. If a maiko is a young person training to become a geisha, what happens if an adult wants to become a geisha? Can an adult begin geisha training? Do they have a certain names? Do they skip over all the visual differences that maiko have? Can’t wait for more videos on this topic!

Hi there! I hope I can help~ If a person is too old to have an apprentice stage, they would start their journey as a shikomi (Just like the maiko) and debut straight out as a geisha/geiko (Called a Misedashi, she would never experience an erikae because there is no "Collar to turn") . Generally speaking in Kyoto they will work as Jikata, musicians, as they're in high need and the dancing repertoire a maiko would have at her erikae would be hard to catch up with. In Kyoto's Gokagai there are generally two or three women who debut straight out as geiko every year, in Tokyo it's more common for women to debut straight out as Geisha compared to the few that might debut as hangyouku. One of the most famous geiko who debuted straight out as Geiko was Geiko Umeha-san who performs both as a musician and dancer.

Thank you for leaving a comment! Compulsory education is until middle school in Japan, that's why Maikos start their training when they are 15 years old. However once they start their trainings, they will not be able to go to high school nor college. The way they are trained, is quite traditional.

Great video Shogo!! Learnt a lot! Why is it that some Geisha blacken their teeth for events?
@LetsaskShogo
@LetsaskShogo 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for writing a comment! The reason is actually very simple... Black teeth were thought to be beautiful in Japan! It is a tradition that may have started around the 4th century, a very long time ago. In 1870, once Japan westernized though, dying teeth black was once for bidden by law, because foreign countries thought it was not beautiful. But now the traditions have revived, and geishas and maikos in Kyoto sometimes dye their teeth black.
@SuperShinkazu
@SuperShinkazu 4 жыл бұрын
If Shogo allows me, I'd like to add that nowadays no geisha paint their teeth black, only the maiko do this for like 1 to 2 weeks right before becoming a geiko in a ceremony called erikae. It's like a rite of passage to symbolize adulthood.

Hi Shogo, question. Do all Maiko has a same hairstyle all over Japan or do they have different hairstyle in each area in Japan? (Planning to make a fanfic that has Maiko in it. But I'm not interested in trying to make an accurate to IRL. So I was thinking of a Maiko with different hairstyle just to make it clear that it was set in fictional setting that is not Kyoto.). (I try to be accurate to IRL so many time and always fail. So I'll just go with the fantasy route.). Sorry for the sudden ranting.
@moushimou3170

I hope I can help~ You might want to know that the term Maiko is only used in the Kansai region, so you might want to think about where your story is set so you use the correct terms. Apprentices in the Kanto region are called Hangyouku. Maiko wear a lot of different hairstyles through their careers for special events and to show seniority. The every day hairstyle of a junior maiko is the Wareshinobu and the every day hairstyle for a senior maiko is the Ofuku, but again, maiko in Kyoto will go through about a dozen or more hairstyles. For Hangyouku these days both senior and junior will wear the Momoware hairstyle as a wig, except for the few kagai in the Kanto region that allow their girls to choose to have their natural hair styled ^^

Maiko paint both their lips after they finish their first year of training. The exception to this is Pontocho where girls start to paint both lips as soon as they start practicing. The minarai in Pontocho have their top lip just barely painted but after they debut both lips are painted equally ^^

There are some special examples, but basically you are not allowed to get married while you are still working as a Maiko or geisha! You will need to retire first if you want to actually get married! I’ve heard from a real geisha, that it is because if an entertainer gets married, her atmosphere tends to change... it’s a very strict world isn’t it?😅
