You, David, Kyle, and Robert got that sod laid in no time. That was cool. Watching you run that old iron was fun. Seeing you go at the dirt pile really makes it clear how much you love your profession. Doesn't mean jobs can't get tedious but I was that lucky as well, that I loved what I did so much. I'm thrilled at being retired now, but I enjoyed my almost 50 year career. Thank you for sharing this wonderful video, Chris. p.s. I do hope you name the shovel Mary Ann.

When you look at the advances that there have been in excavators over the years comparing those old diggers to say the 350 it's truly amazing I am 73 years young and can remember watching most of the old machines when I was young to the modern day machines a big difference not only in ease of use but also speed of use.

We’re the same age. I spent every minute I could between school-out and dinnertime sitting on a spoil pile somewhere watching the BE ‘s and Northwests dig the subdivisions around me. Then they put sewers down my street. Glory Days! Machinery parked right in front of my house!!! Loved the smell of the hot oil grease! I only recently realized that those machines had no articulating buckets! How did they ever do such a good job?

me too , code would say do this ,inspectors would say i could not do that, stop work after stop work, till i called my lawyer in front of them and told him to start a law suit listing the code top guy , the A hole inspector personally , not the inspection processes and the county office they both answer too , ,,, 30 min later inspection forms were completed and singed off by both party's, and both asked me to not get the county office involved , mean while i was 4 weeks behind and about $30000 out of pocket, i filled the complaint, both lost their jobs , did not get refunded, but county office changed their processes shortly after that , if code said do it , they over ruled the inspector , unless it was done wrong, , then one would have to bring it too code, and reinspect, not all handy man are qualified i guess, my guy was , so nothing got redone , and no i did not feel bad they lost their jobs ,surprisingly many local contractors thanked me and my contractor for filling, never went to court , just arbitrary agreement , , guess most local contractors sent letters regarding same issue from what the arbitrator said in his statement, that we were one among many ,with the same issue,

Sod looking real nice Chris, we need to do the same thing here. Seeing you work the old iron earth movers is pretty cool. Growing up in California in the 60's and 70's a quarry half a mile from us had several of those type shovels working the gravel and sand. A few friends and I would go down there and watch the activity occasionally. Dumps trucks galore and even had a cement mixer machine that loaded cement trucks and an asphalt blender and hopper. I'm sure the place is still working the ground out there just have to cut farther and deeper into the surrounding old wash area near San Berdoo. Most of the buildings and roadways in the Berdoo area probably came from the same quarry.

Some of those older mechanical fuel pumps had a priming lever right on them. I'd source one of those and retrofit it. The lever is in the fuel pump base...might be able to swap just the bottom of the pump out It'd still look correct, but the lever primer really works well.
