Impressive operation. And to think, now there is a single machine that does all of it, cut the tree, delimb the log, cut to length and stack - and does it all from the first initial grapple's wrap around the tree.

I know a lot about excavating, but I know nothing about logging. It's cool to see these guys doing what they do. I just wish you would have had that guy explain what he was doing with those different piles of logs. Like what the heck is "pulp wood". I imagine that's wood that's gonna get turned into paper? The next video you do of these guys, please have them explain why certain logs go into certain piles. All that wood pretty much looked the same to me except the smaller stuff that was clearly not gonna get turned into boards.
@pirox2720
@pirox2720 5 жыл бұрын
TrailTrackers each type of tree is used for different purposes some of those will be hardwood some are pine and others are another type of softwood as for the piles it's easier to sort now then try and sort things when they are trying to load the trucks
@operatorfpv7277

Ya, it looks like chaos for sure. I am not experienced in this industry either. My GUESS would be, too small for boards, bends, and good boards in different tree types. All 3 operators, feller, skidder, and processor are trying to sort different piles to make the plant more efficient. Correct me if I'm wrong.
@cathiwim
@cathiwim 4 жыл бұрын
TrailTrackers if you watch this carefully you will see they have one big pile to the right of the cutting machine(im thinking pine for lumber), the longest skinny stuff goes in the tallest left hand pile for pulpwood, and i think the pile to the left of it is hardwoods for lumber. How close was i, Chris?

Cutting down trees like this should be outlawed. The carbon footprint is off that charts. Short term gain for long term pain to the earth. You have a right to make a living but you don't have a right to kill the planet for it.

Why do america do logging 10 times harder just get two equipment one that cuts down threes and branch them and cut them into logs then one that drives them out to a road where a log truck with its own arm that can load the logs on its own trailer
@operatorfpv7277
@operatorfpv7277 5 жыл бұрын
Americans like using tons of equipment. Honestly, this is relatively bare bones compared to some operations. His plant is set up to make easy access to load out. We also dont like spread out trucking, so this is to get a ton of trucks all at once. The process you are talking about is more for remote locations without a lot of truck access.
@davidmathay7117
@davidmathay7117 5 жыл бұрын
Also redundancy. A multipurpose piece of equipment breaks down, you lose all the uses of that piece. A single use piece of equipment can be made up for in the short term. Say the feller breaks down. While its being fixed, the processor and skidder can still run. And you can manually cut the trees down with a chainsaw. Yes, it takes longer but work is still getting done.
@benjaminnothing3873
@benjaminnothing3873 5 жыл бұрын
David Mathay well we work faster and cut down logs faster here even if we have a few hours down time so i dont see the point in doing it the way america does it but i mean its america i have nothing else to say
@operatorfpv7277
@operatorfpv7277 5 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminnothing3873 keep in mind, letsdig18 showed us a video of his first 20 minutes on that felling machine. A good operator can cut an insane amount of wood in a day. That skidded is dragging 3 full size pine trees per trip. That plant is making one mess of limbs in one location. We aren't saying any of them are the most efficient at the whole process. We are saying the volume per hour is what they are after, and they are good at it, as a whole. The single excavator attatchment you are talking about is very cool, and very good at making road width cuts thru the woods. The field size cut like this, I dont think it can keep up. Now, I would love to see a side by side on video and in fuel consumption and hours worked to complete. It is possibly very close. It could possibly be worlds apart. Idk. Either way, we love your method as well, we are just explaining that this is faster in daylight hours vs the feller/plant combo attatchment.

It seems cumbersome. Why not have a machine that folds, removes the branches and cuts in the right lengths. And one machine that drives out the logs to the road and then the truck driver loads the timber truck himself?

@operatorfpv7277
@operatorfpv7277 5 жыл бұрын
Our 'merican truck drivers usually will sit in the truck and wait to be loaded. It's more efficient if you have a practiced, experienced operator staying in the loader and loading the trucks than the drivers who aren't experienced with the machinery loading themselves. Trucks with loading equipment attatched are more expensive than trucks that carry stuff. Also, piles change. It takes a well trained driver to actually look at something and recognize it as pine, oak, etc. Instead of strap, strap, stop sign, signal, PRIUS!!!!
@makingithappen9722
@makingithappen9722 5 жыл бұрын
@@operatorfpv7277 Well, we do so in Sweden and have done so since the end of the 70's. Your system was abandoned about mid-70s. It was considered uneconomical.
@operatorfpv7277
@operatorfpv7277 5 жыл бұрын
@@makingithappen9722 agreed, it costs more in fuel, but is faster volume wise. This is a speed system. Get in, cut, get out. We have a huge area of open country that is usually relatively flat and attatched by fairly straight and flat roads. Where #letsdig18 is, it's miles and miles of flat, wooded area that is turning into patches of farms. I wouldn't be surprised if their truck drivers cover enough distance per load to need 20 drivers or more on tap to keep a loader busy.
