What a mess, tedious digging to get to the bottom of it all. The second cast iron pipe from the overflow catchment looks to be something that could be removed and just cut off in the catchment box as the lower culvert will drain it directly rather than have two outflows. Or am I missing something with it. Nice work Chris and Tim, always enjoy watching you guys work those Yanmar's

Obviously , too many excavators are out of their depth when it comes to dams and other hydraulic structures. It took until the 1930's to understand the soil mechanics , hydrology , and hydraulics well enough to publish a good text on it . See Terzaghi and Peck . Thanks for the very good video !

What I take from the extra cement up on top is that the plant was in need of a plant clean up and they just wash it into trucks and dump in gullies or some job that they can bury out of sight and mind. Not necessarily illegal but sure makes a mess for the next person to get out or through. Just a different day and different problem.

@stevelalondejr21834 жыл бұрын
After the concrete collars are poured do you use anything like holeplug or benseal they are bentonite products"swelling clay" a natural earth product we use when drilling water wells. We have supplied it to local excavators here for just the same type issues you have with leaking ponds,overflows etc. Not sure if I have seen you incorporate it in other videos similar to these digs,good work ! There are formulas of mix ratios for different uses but for a seep we usually use it straight from the bag as we backfill up against the barrier.
@leonblittle2264 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I guess the only two options with that are ripe the lot out and start again correctly, or just encase the joints in yet more cement. Ripping it out would be a hell of job and need a full size breaker. Failing that I guess you could dig a new section and abandon this current pipe if the ends were capped. Damn good mess.

U cant fix stupid lol
@brucemarsh45213 жыл бұрын
@@MsRaidman Actually, stupid is probably much easier to fix than apathy. Stupid can watch this video, and just might learn something. I'm guessing the real problem was one part laziness, two parts cheapness, and a steaming pile of "This'll probably last long enough for it to become someone else's problem." I doubt the original contractor compacted the soil properly, and it looked like they didn't bother to dig below the pipe before pouring the anti-seep collar. So, there was probably just loosely packed soil below the entire length of the pipe. It seems to me that "Lowest bidder" leads to cheapness, which leads to apathy, which leads to laziness - all of which lead to shoddy workmanship and premature failure. Is any of what I said correct? I don't care enough to verify any of it. ;)

I plan on using 15" RCP to make my pond spillway similar to this one. I was considering filling the entire trench in with concrete around the pipe. Good or Bad? Do I have to worry about the pipe floating up in the concrete? At minimum I was going to pour a anti-seep collar at each joint

Looks like that huge blob of concrete was maybe a sinkhole that had formed and they just backed a truck (or three) up and started filling til they got within a couple feet of the top of the dam. That's one way to "fix" it I suppose.

@anthonycash46094 жыл бұрын
Chris what causes the water to start going under the pipe , is it due to the installation and the dirt not being compacted when installed or for not using the right dirt to build the dam. That's wild how the water will eat it's way under the pipe when the least resistance is threw the pipe. I realize that the water has to reach the level on the overflow before it runs into the pipe it's just wild how it eats its way under the dam and the dirt don't collapse in on its self and sort of fixing it self and stopping the leak.
