Toyota Lube Tech Tips/Advice in 2022

I am not sure if it is normal in this industry. I just started as a lube tech with no background education and experience at all. I was lucky enough that i got hired into a dealership. However, i got bullied, laughing and making fun of my language. When I talked about language, since english is my second language and my english is limited, so they always made fun of when i speak, i write something. Every-time i asked for help, they making fun of me first instead. I am now afraid to ask question even though i wanna learn more since I am afraid of them making fun. One person when he saw me did something wrong and funny, he did not correct me but instead he calling others people to look and they all can laugh together. I am not sure if it is the culture of this industry or it is just these people that i work with? I really want to talk to the manager but at the same time, i am new and i dont feel like nothing will change. Any advise?

That’s pretty fucked man. Where I worked we crack jokes and laugh at people but once we get to know them. There’s a lot of assholes in the auto industry. Not all shops are gunna be how you describe yours. And management usually never does what they say they will do to remedy a situation unfortunately. But it is common for people in the industry to act like 6 year old kids. But for advice your gunna have to man up and ask these guys wtf there problem is. I’m sure it’s not the entire shop bullying you.

I started as a lube tech this january 31st and on monday (tomorrow) i start my apprenticeship working with the lead master tech at our shop. This is exactly what i did to move up so quickly and i worked my ass off for it. So excited to move up on my journey!

As a lube tech you need to prove you don't want to be a lube tech. Find issues, feed the the technician's, learn, ask questions. Work your but off.

I went from porter to lubie to apprentice within 5 months. I did get super lucky by having a good service director BUT I got to work early and spent my lunches in the shop learning as a porter and eventually he recognized the effort. You don't even need to bust your ass just stay productive and if you're asked to do something that might not be "your job" just do it. Show your supervisors that you want this. once you're in the shop If you don't know something ADMIT IT the more experienced techs can tell who knows what they're doing and who doesn't. and if you're on a team then be a team player. they have bigger jobs so why not empty their oil catchers when you have a chance or clean their area for them. they will be much more willing to spend their own time teaching you.

Im not gonna lie your whole porter to lube tech to apprenticeship in 5 months seems like cap. Took me 6 months to even get considered for my apprenticeship n i was bustin my ass with 3 prior years of experience.

@@dabag3161 not at all, just depends on your service director. My first director wouldn't even give me a chance as a lubie despite working there for a year and a half and being recommended by all the service advisors for promotion. he just really didn't like promoting from within.

just did 3 warranty timing covers over the last 11 business days. thankfully 2 were 3UR's and only one was a 4runner. I would glance over at the lubies doing LOF and flushes and sometimes you forget how chill and laid back that job is. I like being hybrid certified, getting that car that keeps coming back with timing over-retarded codes and given to me to fix - and finding a broken wire that got missed 3 times by 3 good solid techs. But I haven't forgotten my roots LUBE TECHS listen to this guy and grow yourself. You can easily make 100,000 or more a year as a toyota dealership mechanic YES thats including warranty bs and free diagnosis. GO GET IT!

For any other Toyota techs, apprentices, and lube techs, the 4 cylinder engines take just over 4L of oil, the 6 cylinder engines take 6L, and the 8 cylinder engines take under 8L. Of course these numbers aren't exact but it's a handy rule of thumb that I learnt on my first day when I used to be a lube tech.

I started as a Toyota lube tech last week. What I realized I needed familiarity with was the computer work (service 1 & 2 notes and punch) and of course safety inspection sheet along with understanding your cars/brand as you mentioned. I still don't know what cars need how much litres so I need to use prodemand until I get more experience and feel more comfortable. All in all it's a chill time and you just have to put in good effort to understand everything

I can’t stress this enough that when you start please don’t expect to do oil changes in 10,20, Maybe even 30 mins.. get the flow down then work on being a little faster, it looks good to be fast yes, but I’d looks even better if you avoid silly mistakes from rushing. Don’t be afraid to re check a torque or your filter, whatever the case is. Getting an inspection done the right way, may be slow at first but that’s where the most time and money is. Learn something everyday

We did 200 oil changes a day 7am - 5:30pm with very few workers and had to finish a oil change with other services with it within 10-15 minutes. Doesn’t matter the car that comes in

Exactly! That's where I am right now, 1 month in at Toyota as a Lubie. I was slow at first. An oil change, rotate, mpi would take me 1.5 hours. Ive cut that down to 30 if im rushing, and usually 45-1hour depending on Advisors and Parts oulling their wieght. I feel myself learning and figuring out my own unique ways of cutting time every day. Your coworkers may act snarky at times, or even directly tell you to hurry up. My advice: don't fucking listen to them. Go at your own pace, and focus on doing the job right. Not only is it alot to do in a short period of time, it's alot of physical exertion. So do a few pushup here and there and stretch when you feel pain at the bare minimum.

I worked as a Ford lube tech for a couple years and I was able to memorize each and every oil capacity for every model and engine. For ex the ford explorer, Mustang, and ranger that use the 2.3L have different capacities even tho they are the same engine. The ranger was 5.7q, explorer 5.3q and the Mustang took 6q. Same went for different year coyote motors. The older years took 7.7q while the new updated models took 8.8q. Then they fired me for being 3 minutes late and they're shop quickly started to lose many techs. I was a great and honest tech and apparently that wasn't valuable to them.

my routine is, switch tech a and b weekly. keeps both techs in the 2 man team sharp in each role, idk if every dealership uses a 2 man system but this works very well! 2nd tip, if you want numbers, DONT wait on upsales. advisors are SLOW like really slow, put the car to the side and get another. 3rd tip, send MPI info/upsale/recs as soon as possible, if the advisors are slow, give them as much time as you can.

welp, after a year of working at my dealership starting from a express lube tech I've finally been promoted to apprentice! I start tomorrow and let me tell ya it wasn't easy especially since i felt that my service director was playing favorites. I worked my ass off, got my emissions inspector certification, completed all the training on University of Toyota to be maintenance certified, and STILL had to wait several months.

Something that I find helpful is prep time so I'd arrive 20 minutes early make sure the oil cadi is empty being at Honda we really only use one oil filter so having a few filters making sure my tools are organized and stuff

@@turbro7185 hey man. About to be 2 months in and lemme tell you it’s dope! The people are awesome! Sure, there’s always one guy or two that may not be 100% sometimes as far as attitude goes but we find ourselves there sometimes right? The work environment is great as everyone is constantly working and getting cars in and out. Accidentally broke my first tpms sensor off a Camry wheel which are low profile and the guys made me feel relaxed about it and told me to not worry. They helped me figure that out with the advisor and parts and boom I installed a new one and slapped the tire back on. Mainly doing oil changes, tire rotations, Checking for punctures, replacing tires, checking tire tread depth, brake material thickness, etc. but yeah it’s great. If you have the opportunity go for it! Goodluck!

I busted my ass off when I first started at Honda. We are a union shop so moving up is pretty much based on time and not how hard you work. Good and bad about this. I’m a second year apprentice because I busted my ass when I first started. Now I do bare minimum due to piss poor management and understaffing at our dealer. I’m making the same at the end of the week every week. Raises are every 6-12 months regardless. It’s awesome.

management doesn't only look at how many cars come through your stall, but also how thorough your inspections are and therefore how much work goes to main line after you did the inspection, it's all about not letting work go to other shops because you failed to inspect the car (efficiently and accurately). ISPECTIONS first, then DO THE WORK next.

There is a substantial difference in effort required for a chassis and brake inspection and a situation where the owner is setting in the vehicle and waiting for a quick oil change. The up sell opportunities are still there. But, not to the degree of available time to inspect the often difficult to access cabin filters.

I bought a 2017 Highlander with a I4, which was not common vs the V6. So the first four oil changes they tech either put in too little or way too much. I mean way too much. The last time I checedk it when I got home and it was way too much, went back and the Service Writer looked at the dipstick, smiled , had it corrected, and said "Well..too much is better than too little"....simple thing but tech can get in a hurry. Another time the tech recommended new tires. I had new tires put on 3 days earlier at Goodyear. The Service Writer cringed, went back to the tech, then came back and apologized. It's funny sometimes getting your car serviced.

This works at a dealership that has a system. The one I worked at, parts put oil filters out for us. Multipoint was still pen and paper. Recommendations were hand written. Went to parts. They quoted it. Sent it to a service advisor. Then back to parts. Finally back to lube. It was not organized.

My first Toyota went back and forth with the filter situation since people were stealing them. Also we had paper rec as well I actually prefer that way since most the electronic ones I’ve used are buggy and end up taking longer. But when I was a lube tech we just rec stuff. The writers job was to get prices and labor times. But I feel you.

@@LetsDriftMedia Combination of both works well IMO. Depends on the DMS the company pays for. At my last dealer job we used ERA-Ignite, which has hotkeys to mark all MPI forms good, when you mark something as NG it brings up automated assemblies w/ Parts and labor options, provided the admin set them up. Make sure you select the correct assembly, and the advisor shouldn't have to do anything but review the MPI and make the sale.

I’m working as a lube tech now and my biggest issue is remembering all the little things I gotta do. I’ve also had several cars come back with leaks from things I wasn’t aware of. We work on everything not just Toyotas. What’s the best way to ingrain in me to remember every little thing? My routine being broken seems to be my biggest enemy.

Master your routine on the way you do your inspection. No matter what vehicle you work on your routine and order you check things can be the same. Always double check the oil filter, drain plug and fill cap before taking a car out to make sure you have no leaks and everything’s tight. It will become second nature after some months of repetition

As someone trying to get paper experience im really dissatisfied with the the way things are done when i have a passion and pride for my work but i do a little extra while biting my tongue because i shouldnt be doing more than the time limit allows for a quick lube place i just hope getting my feet wet will put me where i can actually help people instead of upselling things that dont matter it doesnt matter what oil you use if its blowing out the bottoms of your valve covers when you send oil. Just needed vent

we cant do them in 10 minutes, our dealership requires videos of the MPI to be recorded and sent to the customer, also we have to do it all through a computer and recomend service too. you'll be lucky to do 30 minute oil changes.

Dam yea I got out of the dealer before video MPIs started coming in. They tried to make us do that at BMW and no body did it since it took extra time and didnt pay extra time.

@@LetsDriftMedia yep and they wanted us to do a video MPI of the entire vehicle including under the hood, and then lift it up and film all the suspension parts, brake lines etc and show that to customer too, but no one is doing it yet, only a matter of time before they start enforcing it and oil changes will be taking over 1 hour to show and talk to customer about each part of the process. right now we are just doing the outside of the car and under the hood. not under it. but we stil have to show and talk about everything which setting that process up takes about 10 minutes

When your working on a Tacoma or Sequoia or anything with a skid shield that covers the oil filter. Don’t put it back on. You’ll shave minutes off future oil changes. Not to mention you’ll earn the shop more money when you haul a truck load full down to the scrap yard.

Hey man, stumbled onto this channel and love it. So I’m putting a Toyota genuine remanufactured factory transmission in my 2002 Camry 4 cyl. My question is how much transmission fluid do I have to put into the new trans after I install it? Is it completely dry? I read dry it needs 8.2 qts.

If it is a reman it probably has a qt or 2 of fluid, they never ship em dry. Dont put 8.2 you will over fill it. start with 4 to 5qts then start the vehicle, shift through the gears and check the fluid level

OK well in that 10 min oil change are you looking at the struts,the belt,tie rod ends,are you reseting the in dash screen for the oil life,filter life,rotation for miles are you feeling for bad engine or trans mounts.... Etc... 10 min well maybe on a prius.

The single most important thing: Always change the filter FIRST. Then drain the engine. Make that your routine.

Why? The dirtiest oil in the engine is in the oil filter. When you break the seal on the filter, half of that dirty oil drains back into the engine. If you have already drained the engine and put the drain plug back, you just left the dirtiest oil in the engine...in the engine.

Not that important. A lot of oil filters go on upside down now so really wouldn’t make a difference removing it first or after.

@@LetsDriftMedia I started working at a BMW dealer in Houston in 1979, have been to engine schools for BMW, Maserati, Land Rover, and Ferrari. This was taught to us in all of these schools. Does it make a difference? Probably not one that you can measure over the life of the engine. It's just a matter of doing something right vs good enough.

So you’re back at Toyota? Do they not have a quick lube cheat sheet in the dealership? With what engine sizes are in what car , type of oil and torque specs? Def helps after working on so many different makes and models since 05. Was a mission to get in dealerships then but it’s a breeze these days since everyone needs people

Some dealers do, some dont, I personally wrote down oil filter numbers and oil capacities on different engines toyota had at first until I memorized them. and no still a fleet mechanic.

8 months to me is still new. If you are killing it at work after 12 months id start talking to management asking them what you need to do or accomplish in order to move up.

Same filter you use on a 92 civic you put on a 2020 type R or even ridge line, Honda filters actually fit Subaru boxer engines

As a lube tech you probably won’t get diag work like you are explaining. And if you have to stop what you are doing always make a mental note to where you left off. So you don’t return and forget to add oil or tighten the drain plug
