Another brilliant video. I find it fascinating to try and imagine what they really believed, how ordinary people really felt. Undoubtedly their world view was very different to our own, but I also think it's important not to exoticise ancient people or to make assumptions about them. It's easy for us to make leap to incorrect conclusions based on the available evidence (I always wonder if future archaeologists will think we worshipped our pets as gods). For instance, were they as cynical about the gods as we are now? I'm sure they were - the tombs of most pharoahs were robbed almost immediately, so obviously at least some people didn't put too much store in the curses of the afterlife. I find that kind of exercise in empathy fascinating - like going through the door into someone's mind in Being John Malkovich. I like to think of the study of history as a telephone call to the past with very bad reception - which is why I love art (and philosophy). It allows me to have a direct conversation with people who came before me and treat them as peers, even if they were obviously far more brilliant than I'll ever be. Yet, ironically, getting into the heads of ordinary people in the past is much more difficult than trying to understand great figures of art or philosophy.
@shenanigans3710
@shenanigans3710 6 жыл бұрын
Well I don't really find "exceptional" people to be necessarily more interesting than "ordinary" people. For starters, I've met a lot of so-called exceptional people in my capacity as a journalist and they were boring as hell. Plus, I don't view life or "progress" as necessarily quantifiable or teleological - ie. I don't think moral actions are quantifiable and that we're headed for some kind of Star Trek future and the only people we'll care about in 1000 years will be the Elon Musks of the world. I guess my worldview is a little more Kantian or deontological - essentially, I think every human action is ultimately relative, which is why I tend to have a more spiritual outlook and believe, ultimately, in some kind of higher power, albeit of a kind that we cannot possibly comprehend. (Sorry, I'm off on a tangent! But I like these exercises, they help me clarify my thoughts) So what AM I saying...? Essentially: that the schools of post modernism (despised by the likes of Peterson), despite their flaws and their misapplications, have given us some very powerful and ultimately valuable insights. One of those is that viewing history as merely a timeline of "great" events and "great" people not only offers us a less rich view of history but a less accurate one too. The perspectives of ordinary people in Ancient Egypt (for example) are not intrinsically more important than those of a Pharaoh but they're equally as interesting and, importantly for the historian, give us a much richer picture of what life was like and what people's worldview was.

The funny thing about cleopatra and many other pharaohs is that their wasn’t just one. I believe in the history of the Egyptian empire 7 cleopatras were married into/held the throne. Same with Ptolemy, most people believe Ptolemy was one man but in reality the name Ptolemy is the last name of the entire Ptolemaic bloodline

Very nice video again; although one request if I may. Could you do an asmr video on scientific theories? For example: the story about relativity and Einstein’s train and lightning thought experiment. I can picture you saying “as the lightning strikes, for the person on the train shock B would appear to be faster..” would be eerie finding theories relaxing. Thanks for the video.

I’ve listened to you for a while, its very relaxing. But i know, that you know, that the egyptians of that era never built the pyramids. The pyramids are far older, and far to complex for it to have been constructed by the bronze tools from this era. The egyptians might be descendents from the original builders, but thats just speculation at this point. Its even been proved that the sphinx and the pyramids in the area around used to be below water to a certain extent. The mighty egyptians really were awesome and interesting, but there’s gotta be drawn a line somewhere.
