On today's episode of #LetsTalkAboutIt, we're providing ways to help someone who has an eating disorder.
Instead of just confronting someone saying, "hey, it looks like you've lost a few pounds," come at it from the angle of saying "I've noticed a change in your personality."
We we'll break it all down and provide tips alongside our partners at Equip.
Kristina Saffran [CEO + co-founder] and Dr. Erin Parks [chief clinical officer + co-founder] share the importance of having the entire family involved, and setting rules so they don't act on their 'urge to purge.'
Family-based treatment is important when treating an eating disorder because there is an ambivalence to give it up.
The more you can equip them with care, education, and resources, the better!

Thank you for sharing your lived experience. You are taking the first step to dispelling stigma for us all. For support and resources on mental health, the NAMI National Warmline Directory is a great resource, unlike a hotline for those in immediate crisis, warmlines provide early intervention with emotional support that can prevent a crisis - and a more costly 911 call or ER visit. The lines are typically free, confidential peer-support services staffed by volunteers or paid employees who have experienced mental health conditions themselves. For a list of where to find this service in your area please check out the link here -> www.nami.org/NAMI/media/NAMI-Media/BlogImageArchive/2020/NAMI-National-HelpLine-WarmLine-Directory-3-11-20.pdf You can also call the National Eating Disorder Association Hotline at 1-800-931-2237, Monday-Thursday 11 am-9 pm, Friday 11 am-5 pm ET, and their online chat option can be located here: www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/help-support/contact-helpline. For 24/7 support, call 1-800-273-TALK (8255 or text the Crisis Text Line (they can be reached for any kinds of mental health concerns), text TALK to 741741. Family based treatment is not always appropriate. I think that it might work for young people if the family themselves are getting therapy and they're willing to get healthy as a family unit. But I think it causes mental strain on their relationships And can really tear a riff and break trust and it's going to be a lot of fighting.

Im not going to disclose my age for safety reasons, but I am a minor and in school Every day my friend will come in, barely eat anything, and ask to go to the bathroom to throw it back up Shes stated multiple times that it's not only because she's insecure but because she's suicidal I've been trying my best to get her help but we don't want to tell her family because she doesnt live with her dad and her mom is neglectful and she's said she's hit her a few times before and doesn't care much for her mental health so we feel like if we were to tell her mom most she'd do is just ground her and yell at her for it instead of trying to help I've been trying to look into ways of helping with the situation and this video did help a little so thank you ❤

My girlfriend has bulimia and I really want to help her in any way I can. I do my best to check on her all the time and tell her how proud of her I am for her progress and congratulate her for eating. This video talks a lot about family based treatment, but her family makes it worse and doesn’t think of it as an actual problem. They’re actually one of the reasons she developed the eating disorder. Does anyone have any tips for me to help her out more.

I really need help. My twin sister is my best friend and I don't know what to do at this point. I suspected her of having an*rexia (I didn't know if this is supposed to be censored or not) around may of 2021, she started to over exert herself in exercise and eat very little, I tried to subtly that I'm worried about it but she's stubborn so she didn't really listen. Around July I saw on her phone that she was in a pro-ana discord chat so I asked her about it and she denied, eventually she told me she was lying to me and promised she would stop, but late July we went to our grandparents house for a couple weeks and I realize after every meal she was throwing it up ( she would lock herself in the bathroom for 5 minutes, after meals, her eyes were watery when she exited, ect), I confronted her about it and she denied it, so I let it go, assuming I was just seeing things. Back in early September my mom saw my sister's notes app open and she had a throwing up log. My mom threatened to send her to a rehab center but my sister promised her she wouldn't do it again, and my mom caved. Lately she has went vegetarian ( she still eats fish but I didn't know how to spell the word for it) so she won't have to eat as much, but today, I saw her eat this cinnamon croissant, and then about 5 minutes later I was sweeping the stairs and I saw her go into the bathroom and lock the door ( which she never does and wouldn't need to do that because she is the only one on the second floor besides me who is sweeping the stairs) the I heard the plopping sound of vomit. Unless she had solid diarrhea, I doubt I heard something else. So now she's throwing up again and I don't know what to do. Do I confront her? Do I tell my mom? Should I gather more information than hearing what I did? I really don't know, she clearly doesn't want to get better, she once told me that her goal weight is 83 pounds which is dangerous for her age and height. Please help me.

im so sorry to here that omg, although im not a professional therapist, maybe you can try and talk to your parents or a family member, maybe your mum again about how you think she still has one so you can get her to go to a rehab center, i feel that your mum shouldnt be threatening her to go to rehab center because thats a negative way to do it, i think you and your mother maybe should confront her one more time and tell her how much you love and care for her and how you want her to get help, tell her all the negative mental and physical consequences of a eating disorder. and from what you commented she seems to be in a very dangerous situation rn bc vomiting is incredibly unhealthy to do on a daily basis, so although being forced to do anything isnt nice, you kind of have to force her to go to rehab so she can get the treatment that she needs, i hope that helped and I really hope that your sister will get better

I had a young friend a while ago, and just recently reunited with her and her family. She has said many things that signal to me that she is struggling with this, and her actions are glaringly obvious. Her parents don't seem to know or care. I'm not sure how to help her or what to say. We are rarely alone and she doesn't have a phone. I think it is a means of control.

I’ve had an eating disorder since I was 12, I’m 23 now. Definitely have some good years/bad years but currently I’m on a bad streak. My bf has been the most amazing support but sometimes he says “come on you really need to start eating more” or “you really need to start gaining more weight” which I know I do, however at this moment it feels like it’s the only thing I have control of &&&&& I just feel embarrassed when he points it out.

Hm. I caught a very dear friend to me, throwing up in the bin room outside my flat. When I did that, I said "thats OK but please just use my bathroom, you are not at fault". After that she did it only once and thanked me for my understanding (5 meals in). With her I calculated the calories she ate, and she realised, that the meal would not change her body. We started talking about why she is doing it, and it is because she hates herself. Now. I do not to stop people from purging. I want to stop people hating themselves. Why is this not mentioned? In my eyes and from personal experience (yes talking about myself), helping people not hate themselves is a wonderful solution!

hello! i wanted to talk to you about my cousin, jake. we have been very close since birth, as we are of similar ages! my whole life, i've noticed his avoidance to most foods (at the moment, i've only ever seen him eat unhealthy foods) even when he does have a meal (almost always chicken tenders/chicken nuggets with a side of jello), he doesn't even eat all of it. when it comes to dinner time, our family normally goes out to dinner. jake always tries to take the subject away from him eating (ex: the entirety of the day he'll be moody, rude, and ignore us, and when dinner time comes he'll begin talking to us to avoid attention being brought towards him not eating.) also, when i asked him about it, he informed me the pills he is taking for his adhd caused it. his family decided that instead of trying any sort of therapeutic tools to help his adhd or anything like that, they jumped straight to medication. these pills cause him to not feel hungry, therefore when it's time to eat, he only eats a selection of foods. his mindset has become increasingly more unhealthy and concerning. it worries me if this will affect him once he becomes older! any suggestions on how i can help?

Well, how can I do that when it's my wife? She had had the worst of it before we met, she was hospitalized for a long time, it went south and she nearly died of blood poisoning on account of being so weak her immune system was unable to cope with the infection, probably from contaminated iv. We met when she was stable and quite well, fell in love usual stuff... then we had our first child. Pregnancy was awesome, she looked well and cared properly for our unborn child (we were not making love often during that time on account of my fear of harming the child - I know it's not strictly rational but I somehow can't bear the possibility) she knew the reason and seemed OK with it. Sometime after giving birth to our first boy it got bad though and she fell into her old habit of losing weight and purging and all the usual stuff common for anorexia. On top of it, she was adamant about breastfeeding as long as she would be able. I and both our families tried to snap her out of her old habit to no avail. It got bad quite fast, she weight under 37kg (81.571 pounds) Then it got suddenly better during the time her father was dying and after he died... I guess she forgot to hate herself during that time, she had to be strong for him... (she is quite selfless and sensitive) when it was all over she was good enough physically that she could start to heal mentally. That is at least my interpretation of the events, This account might not be entirely correct, but that is how I remember it and how I explain it to myself - it has been some time. Then everything was okay for over 3 years until our second son was born. It was quite eventful. Due to covid restrictions, we did not manage to get to the hospital in time and our baby was born at a gas station on the way there. But that episode probably brought us even closer if anything. I love her very much. After she gave birth to our second son it was great for a brief time, we made love passionately and often for some time and lived a happy life, but for some reason, her anorexia started to creep back in again. I did not realise it for some time since it's normal for the female body to change after pregnancy and also she was a happy and loving mother and wife so I was unable to imagine the more unlikely situation to fall back into her old habits. But well it happened and now, 8 months later she weighs under 40kg again. She knows I know, she knows our families know and that we are all very worried about her, her health and about our children. she herself dreams about having a daughter and even pinned a mantra on our fridge that says " I have to eat healthily so I might be given my beloved dreamed of daughter one day." But she does not act on it. She does not eat enough, she purges often, claiming it to be out of stress induced by having to keep the house in order and kids well looked after. She looks for every reason not to eat, and would rather wash the flor several times a day than have a meal. Nothing can wait but her meals. I have to admit I'm getting quite angry with her and I'm barely able to control my temper. I love her very much but she is also the mother of my children and they deserve a healthy mom and frankly need Her far more than a shiny flor or well-cleaned room. She makes it even harder by constantly caring about my diet and forcing the food down my throat while she is vanishing in front of my eyes day by day. I'm well over twice the weight of my whole family combined so I would rather lose some weight but I can't because it would make her go ballistic. I don't know what to do. I'm exhausted. I can not watch her all the time since I have to go to work and provide (I'm the only earner in the family). She is at home with children ad can do whatever and I would never know. I'm tired of asking because I hate her lying to me. I can't get her to enter a programme because she has a small kid and barely a toddler to care for and she would not go anyway, I tried to involve the wider family, but its reach is limited bordering with nonexistent. We don't make love anymore because it is just painful to me to see her like this. Even though she is very attractive when "in remission" she is quite repulsive like this. I'm sorry for the strong word but she looks like a draped over skeleton and I can't make myself feel otherwise even though I still love her and want to just hug her. It's so difficult to not just see, but also to feel how far she has gone. I'm afraid she will die. I'm the one who should take the bullet, it's my job to protect the family but I feel so useless in this situation. I don't know what to do anymore. I'm grasping at straws, like strangers wherever online for a piece of advice that would give me the slightest hope. I know it's not very probable you could say anything to help, well Hope is the last to die I guess...

I've been through that with an ex. She needs to be admitted to a hospital that specializes in this. When they are this deep into it they need full time monitoring. This disorder is a monster that takes over. She can't fight it herself. You need to get her into a program and get her hospitalized

I'm almost 100% sure my friend has an eating disorder and I wish I could do something so he feels less guilty when eating food but unfortunately he lives abroad and I can't really be with him a lot : So I wanted to know if someone had any tips for that? Also the things to say or to not say to someone with this kind of disorder?

Thank you for taking the first step and expressing your struggle. By asking for help for your girlfriend, you are taking the first step to dispelling stigma for us all. We hope you will check out the links to the resources in the description box for where to learn more and where to get treatment and support. For a list of where to find this service in your area please check out the link here -> www.nami.org/NAMI/media/NAMI-Media/BlogImageArchive/2020/NAMI-National-HelpLine-WarmLine-Directory-3-11-20.pdf

Its hard to overcome just take things slow and think about what will make you happy. Don’t let other people define your happiness if they make fun of you then it isnt your fault just know that even if you dont believe it, there are people who understand what your going through.
