Tanya and Dave, I have a class “A” 43 foot motor home and have been living in it since 2015 and have found one thing that made all the difference to me was a Simply Safe Alarm system. I put sensors on all my doors and windows (that open more than a few inches) as well as all the storage spaces underneath. I downloaded a GPS APP that gives me the physical address as well as the coordinates and put the physical address into the Simply Safe app whenever I park even if it is only for a few hours. This way the town I am in monitors my safety whenever I turn it on. I also have their smoke detector, motion detector, glass breaking detectors.
@LetsTurnItUpWorldАй бұрын
That’s great, thanks so much for sharing how you keep yourself safe. We may need to look into Simply Safe as well!
@nanabutnerАй бұрын
@ I promise you won’t regret it. I have. driven coast to coast and stayed in all kind of places from camp grounds/RV PARKS TO truck stops and parking lots and never was afraid to go to sleep! You can download their apps and arm and disarm your system from your phone even if you are miles away from your RV. THERE IS ALSO A PANIC BUTTON YOU CAN PLACE DIRECTLY BESIDES YOUR BED IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. I also got a friend to install the system in their home as well as my daughter and myself(I have two systems). Simply Safe works for RV as well as for permanent dwellings. Another plus is your smoke detector is being monitored even when your system isn’t armed. I FOUND THAT OUT WHEN I WAS PAN FRYING MY DINNER! If I am not mistaken you can add on a carbon dioxide detector to your system so you are constantly monitored especially when you are sleeping!
@jodymooney255Ай бұрын
…but don’t you need WiFi for your Simply Safe? We had installed an alarm system (DroneMobile) since we had our catalytic converter stolen.
@nanabutnerАй бұрын
@ No! The BASE UNIT is it’s own wifi! That is why it works almost anywhere! Up until 6 months ago-- (thanks to T-mobile) I never had actual wifi in my RV, but went everywhere across the country with just my dog and cat all the while being monitored when ever I stopped and put the physical address into my settings on the Simply Safe app.
@kathleenpullano3848Ай бұрын
That's a great idea but do keep in mind that if your in a rural area it would likely provide no protection for your physical safety as it takes a while for the sheriff to get to you.But it's still a valuable safety net
@patriciabandeko3842Ай бұрын
You also might want to put reflective strips on you rig like big trucks have and if you park in a truck stop don't park all the way back of the spot. Be visible to trucks backing in next to you. I'm a trucker and sometimes rv's and campers are hard to see when we back in. Be safe folks ❤

Our mechanic keeps trying to talk us into getting a used coach because he hates our old diesel uhaul conversion. But we feel a LOT safer having built our own rig and knowing every inch of it. I think the best thing an RVr can do is learn their rig inside out from the start. Get the manuals, learn the systems, so even if you don't do the repair yourself, you'll know when some repair shop is BSing you. Stay safe! 😃👍🏼

Everyone new to RVing should be required to watch this video. We have been seriously RVing for 24 years and luckily we have only had one major water leak caused by overloading the cabinet where our water filter was located. We had one propane incident when one of us bumped into the stove when the slide was in and accidentally turned the stove on. We immediately recognized the smell and figured out the problem. One must be diligent about safety. Being overweight causes handling issues. Tire pressure,tire wear and tire age are all important. We replace all tires over five years old even if they are not showing that much wear. Our kitchen gear includes one frying pan, one microwaveable dish, one cookie sheet and one tea kettle. We use paper plates with heavier disposable plastic plates under them. We only have four settings of silver wear. Again, most excellent video, thanks for taking the time to post.
@DMB-pe8hkАй бұрын
These are great tips. Please remember to check tire dates printed on them bc many dealers sell old tires. Last I heard, there is still no law about this, and tires get brittle.

Great tips! I want to stress getting a carbon monoxide detector! We almost lost I lives a few years ago in our stationary camper when we had a furnace leak, someone in my head woke me up( divine intervention?) & literally told me " your being poisoned by carbon monoxide, you need to get out" over & over. I was getting the brunt of it in the back bedroom & my husband/ dog were sleeping by the slider that was cracked open,. I literally crawled to my husband & woke him. We got out by the grace of God! The carbon monoxide alarm was on the wall with dead batteries. Lesson learned!!! Thanks to a higher power watching out for us!!

Good tips. We part timed for 4 years & full timing now going on 3 years. We have a TT. When my husband and I are staying in a parking lot... one safety feature we started doing....was to pull our camper stairs inside & and shut the door. A simple cane works to grab the stairs with the hook & then use the hook on the door. Our TT sits up high making it more difficult to get inside. If folks are wondering...well how can I insure safety staying in a strange city. Look up the reviews of the businesses that surround the parking lot. People aren't afraid to say...if it looks a bit sketchy. Safe Travels!❤

@Tsiri099 күн бұрын
You gained a subscriber here. ALL valid points. Especially tire speed ratings. Every state ( I live in NM) has speed laws for trailers. In NM it's 65 and I see so many RV's of every type and big rigs blowing past at 70 and over. "I haven't had a problem yet" is the cry of many who have blowouts, wrecks and breakdowns. Add in wheel bearings- waiting until there's a problem is disastrous. I use USA made bearings, changed every year and high performance grease. I don't scrimp when it comes to the wheels, tires, bearings, breaks and checking the trailer's frame welds. As for mold, people fail to realize that propane is a wet fuel- you can have mold in the desert- the fifth wheel that was given to me had it. Two statements I've been handed by people: 1. You don't need a security camera- you live in an RV. Crime is increasing, and yes, I do have and everyone should have a security camera. 2. If you're so scared to live in an RV, move to an apartment. To those people, I remind them that I own what I'm living in and rv lot rent is FAR cheaper than an apartment where I live ($255 rv lotvs $1400 per month for an apt), and moving is much easier for me. I also get the "why don't you have a vehicle that can tow your rv?" I don't need one. I can call a tow truck.

You are both so happy and provide a lot of good information. I've seen campers put a generator within 2 feet of their unit! The minimum is 10 feet and then you should consider the wind direction! Always take time to think about your safety FIRST. As you do, turn off all propane while travelling and I always insured I had two added safety devices front and back within my unit. I also ALWAYS installed two QUALITY fire detectors one in front and one in the rear regardless of what the camper already has. Today, high lumen solar lamps are cheaply available and I would place on on each side on my camper. Humidity inside is critical to your environment. Thanks for sharing!!!!!!!!

I don't live in a camper. So I don't know what it's like. But my family is a camping family. We have had many RVs and Vans, and also an old-school Volkswagen bus. One good tip I found is to keep your propane and other cooking fuels disconnected. Only connect it when you're using it. Keep the storage caps on them. That will minimize problems.

I may have tuned in on a new RV channel just to see what the unit was like but nothing more. So I think, personally, I would have to call that a matter of not accessing a video supplying the information . BTW: Tanya I love your scarf! I knew about propane leaks and fires. RV’s like to go up like a match. The parking lot thing has been addressed a few times. Many parking lots cannot be used anymore. Definitely have heard about theft. And water/propane leaks. The videos on a lot of this stuff are old. There are also water filtration videos from numerous RV’ers. But it never hurts to go over things anyway. Thank you for taking the time! Vaya con Dios!

I have a lot of issues with propane in an RV that comes from living aboard a ketch back in the day. When we were laying out the various systems in our Defender overland camper, we decided to go with diesel for our stove and secondary heater. Everything draws from a single line in the main tank. We did keep the end of the tube a few inches above the bottom of the tank to insure that we couldn’t inadvertently empty the tank!

The only thing about a RV or anything like it that would drive me nuts is the fact that there's absolutely no protection from gunfire if a nut decides to walk up and shoot while you are sleeping, that's also the reason why I didn't sleep in a tent when I was homeless a few years ago.

Very useful safety and mold tips. CO monitor a must everywhere, all the time. Always check for stones between duallies! You showed a radiant heater. Big fire danger no no. The small catalytics are safer, if they have tipping protection. Mold ventilation maybe better from lower down so you don't lose so much heat. Try asking a cop where to park. Thanks so much for these tips, Tanya & Dave. I really appreciate it. I especially would like to make a comment about your tip on Carbon Monoxide. CO is not something to take lightly. My husband & I have a daughter-in-law who experienced a great tragedy due to CO. On Valentine's Day night, about 14 years ago, her parents went to bed not realizing their furnace was leaking CO into their home. Due to the odorless nature of CO and not having an alarm system to detect the gas, they continued sleeping and did not survive the night. It's a true and very, very sad story. So, our daughter-in-law and all of us in her family are big advocates for CO and fire alarms in any home, including traveling homes. Do an occasional check on these alarms to insure your safety after installing them. You just never know when an alarm might give the warning that could save your life. God bless you both. Sue 😊❤

We don't have an RV, but we rent an 80s-vintage trailer that supposedly has central heat and air, but the unit is always broken, and I don't think all the "ductwork" (which is the flexible dryer ducts, not the rigid metal) is still attached. Probably resembles swiss cheese, given that we've seen 3 opossums and half a dozen cats come out from under us in the 5 years we've been there. So space heaters are a thing. We have cats, so safety in regards to auto-shut-off is important to us. We use a tower heater (De’Longhi HFX25S15L, if anyone wants to look it up) that works really well, and will shut itself off if it is so much as nudged (annoying sometimes, because when the cats get the zoomies, it gets bumped into a LOT) as well as an internal sensor to keep it from overheating. It wasn't the cheapest alternative, but it wasn't close to the most expensive, either (I want to say we payed just under $90 after tax), and it heats the main living/kitchen area very well, so should do even better in an RV situation. It's electric, so it will use your battery, but it's efficient, and has an ECO mode and thermostat. It can also be used during warm months as a fan-only.

Now that does not mean I am rich because I had five motorhomes this is over a 20-year period of traveling and exploring. I'm really glad you brought up safety one thing you didn't bring up which I find interesting is the worst problem I ever have had and always have is law enforcement. I would think I'm fine to Boondock and there are so many places where cops hate motor homers because to them it means homeless people that are going to leave trash everywhere and dump their waste down the gutter. I lived in Redondo Beach with my motorhome they have a 24-hour ban against what they call large Vehicles which aren't large at all it stops at 21 ft2

I never fill the gas tank in my van unless I'm going long distances in the middle of nowhere. That can be something overlooked regarding weight. I just have a Chevy Express van so I usually don't really have to worry about the weight until I start loading it with my band and their gear. When I travel for fun though, I travel very light. I just think the full tank makes the van feel less powerful and that first quarter tank seems to burn fast. Especially in a place with a lot of hills or mountains. I'm sure it helps with the brakes when going down hills and mountains.

Great video. Additional tip: Get your pet microchipped, make sure you have a collar with your name, phone number and RV as your home on it, and say your prayers daily for travel mercies. You two are wonderful humans!!

Plus living in your van is considered vagrancy in some places, or so the police think.

Good video! Thanks for the tips ...any concerns about salt from the road? In the winter - do you need to wash under your camper to clear salt from the roads???

I am renting at my friends right now and some men stopped on the highway and fighting and right outside this house we felt so unsafe and if they broke into the house we can’t just drive away, I feel way safer on the road

I'm planning to move out of my mobile home as soon as I can. New owners to the park have increased the rent 60% in 8 years. Its going to take me some time to get rid of all the stuff I've accumulated in the past 30 years. I'm not going to be able to get something as nice as Desert Snow. Being retired and having an older mobile home to sell, I may have to look for a van to purchase. I am not looking forward to moving out of my home.

So sorry to hear that, we wish you the best as you move out of your mobile home. Thanks for sharing.

Asking for ideas or lies. Not really sure where this applies, but living in a van or small rv involves moving stuff all day long.

Im surprised you dont have a gasoline version of a diesal heater. they're very efficient and pull from your vans fuel tank
@LetsTurnItUpWorldАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Our generator pulls from our van’s fuel tank, but not our heater.

On the point of a “full” water tank. I’ve had rvs where the handling was greatly improved with a full tank. I challenge most to know whether a full water tank versus a half tank of water matters. Too many factors. Point being. Experiment with the variables to determine what works best for you

Propane leak can you store an alarm with the tanks? Small space fire 🔥 can you get a fire blanket and extinguisher Question on small space - I like space, have you considered an inflatable tent and inflatable garage? They sell in Amazon? They are 4 season canvas tents. Question safe spaces - is it possible to travel and only park in camp sites? Rest stops with security? What about a large dog? Kane corso? Weight capacity and theft? I was thinking of towing a small trailer for storage. A lockable one wit😂 cameras? Cold climate - is a portable snowblower useful to keep the van dug out?😂
@LetsTurnItUpWorldАй бұрын
Thanks for watching. You ask a lot of great questions. We all should have a fire extinguisher, which we ourselves have, and make sure you know how to use it! Good question about a propane leak alarm we aren’t familiar with an alarm for propane at least for camper vans. We do have an inflatable tent that we use sometimes, especially in the winter since it is a hot tent with a wood stove inside! You could stay only in camp sites. We just find that sometimes we just want a quick overnight while on the road and a truck stop or safe parking lot is more convenient for us. Large dogs would be a great deterrent for sure!! You can definitely tow a small trailer assuming you stay within your weight and tow limits. We generally just use a good strong metal shovel in the winter that works for us in ice and snow (one that is often used by avalanche rescue teams). We hope this helps, thanks for sharing your questions!! 😀
