Whenever I was in a Wal-Mart lot, alone, I had a great trick. If I was leaving to go into the store, I'd exit my RV, lock it, and start to walk away. After 2 or 3 steps, I'd stop, turn around, and open the door again. I'd stand there and pretend i was having a conversation with my husband. Like, "What flavour?", or, "Do you want pre-cooked or raw?" Then I'd pretend to be frustrated and walk away. It gave the impression that i wasn't alone, and my husband wasnt allowed to come with me because he was a human sea monster.😊

Yes, the idea of saying the word “we” is really wise. I even go so far as to lie to people and say, “my husband and I” and I’ve never been married. Putting two chairs out is smart, as well. Parking to drive OUT is essential. I’ve always found (and told children and women) that LIES that keep you safe are NOT LIES. They are life savers.❤ Love you guys.

My husband and I were short-term and weekend campers until we were at a campgground on Claremore, OK, on May26 when we were sleeping in our travel trailer and it was rolled over in a direct hit by a tornado. We were too far from town to hear any sirens, my phone setting had changed and did not sound a weather hazard notification, and the campground security car had to take cover before we were warned. It was a miracle that we survived. My point is that every camper should stay weather aware and find out about the weather conditions and notifications they need to know in case they need to go to a near by sturdy shelter. Be prepared and have a plan for what you will need to do to be safe because riding out the storm in a van or RV is not the best plan.

I’m a female solo tent camper…always 2 chairs, and few “manly” items of clothing (shoes, sweats or shorts thrown over a clothesline) and a firearm (or pepper spray or bear spray). I also have an 80 lb pit bull: she’s a big wussie, but she will definitely deter someone! Looking for an RV now, getting too old to sleep on an air mattress! Thanks guys!!!

I have a Doberman who is a big baby. She is way too friendly. But I wouldn’t let anyone know that if I’m alone. I’m married but my husband is disabled so I do all the driving, set up, and tear down. That puts me outside alone often. I put our useless dog on a leash and keep her with me.

I just travelled through Canada and up into Alaska by myself with my dog in my Sprinter. I have another month of travel. I always say “we” because I am traveling with my dog, never thinking it’s a good idea as a solo woman, LOL. I simply trust my gut and am aware of surroundings at all times. Unless I am in a campground, my van is in a ready to go mode before I go to sleep. I leave nothing outside and have the van parked so I can escape forwards or backwards. I also have several defensive items within my van close by in case I need it. I love traveling alone. Women have to deal with way more issues as far as security than men and always have, whether it’s solo van living or just living day to day. It’s simply a sad fact of life. I personally refuse to let fear control my life. I love your videos. You two are refreshing and wonderful. Walk in peace guys!!

I'm used to traveling alone because I'm a trucker. I've bought a small class c for my upcoming retirement which includes my protective dog and the 2nd Amendment. If someone picks me for a victim I'm gonna make them regret it. Just because I'm old doesn't mean I'm nice. I don't bother anyone and I refuse to BE bothered. I sure don't mind the size of my rv, compared to living in a semi my rv is a palace with a bathroom and kitchen...luxuries! Plus I'm already used to bathroom "challenges" and being very frugal with water. I'm sure the drastic changes for people accustomed to regular life will find these things a bit of a challenge but don't give up on your dreams...you can do it. Happy trails, my friends ❤.

I haven’t lived in an rv but did drive from the west coast to Missouri alone. Honestly, I loved it. I had only one frightening incident on the way with a big rig riding my bumper cuz it said Cali. Thank God a little truck came from out of nowhere, I mean nowhere and got between us waving me on to make distance from him.

As a single female who tent camps with a young child, I always take my 2nd amendment with me. I was approached once by someone claiming to be a ranger. He invaded my personal space and I declared that I did not have to be a sharp shooter at such a close distance. He left pretty quickly.

Great information. I am “learning” how to roam. My biggest find is I spend too much time trying to figure out where to stay each night. And not enough time just flowing. Still working out balancing the miles a day and what to see while meeting my need to know where I am spending the night. I’ve had flashes of things being idyllic, but sort of mirrors life. Moments of perfection, not endless perfection. On the organization, I laughed. All my efforts to organize always end up in “cram and store”. This inability to organize is inherent and lifelong. I theorized years ago “An organized person can become unorganized, but an unorganized person will never be organized”. After two great trips I have made friends with the fact that part of van life is moving stuff around all day. Thanks for the great videos. I am jealous you get cat snuggles. Happy miles and many smiles

Well, I’m glad I’m used to living alone for a long time. I don’t get lonely. I cherish my solitude and all the things I do because there’s no one to object to my choices. The hardest for me would be the minimalistic living. I love all my extras, the choices of different clothing each day, my many shoes, jackets/long coats, and I love having all my kitchen gadgets. I do love the RV living but I don’t think I’ll do it full time.

Well I’m going to van life in 5 years and I started cleaning today as a hurricane approaches. To acclimate pets that are not used to traveling, give them a controlled environment to check out and explore your van or RV BEFORE departure day. Cats are particularly sensitive to new places and need to explore where their box will be placed. They will eat and have their water source away from their box. Do you eat next to YOUR port-a -potty?
@anlewi1

We got our kitten when he was very young and the dogs raised him so he acts like a dog he doesn't use a litter box he goes out with the dogs outside and goes to the bathroom. Which I had an old litter box that belonged to my mom and her cats that was cleaned up and put in storage but at the time he just wanted to be with the dogs so that's how he is. So that's one thing I would not have to worry about. One thing I do first before going anywhere is check with my bet if she knows any vets in that area even if it's from back when she went to school and then I worry about finding Specialists that I can go to for my health issues. The fur babies always come first. I so enjoy your channel keep up the great work.

Solo female van life is less safe in high crime urban areas, as it is for EVERYONE in high crime urban areas! After 18 months in both tourist and remote areas, I haven’t even met someone creepy. I did leave one boondocking site because it didn’t feel good. I use apps, maps, and weather forecasts to plan my travel-since I can’t afford campgrounds, I have to have a couple potential spots lined up every time I move. My 90-lb, barky pup serves as my early warning system and predator deterrent as well as companion. I’ll never be a minimalist, sadly, so organizing and putting things away are a constant. Is it always easy and fun? No, especially when your social security is below the poverty line. Some creativity and resilience, and willingness to take the time to work through the issues that arise are key for me. Would I rather be in stix and bricks? Not on your life! Maybe when I’m 85!! Great video

I enjoyed living in a travel trailer in my 20s and again for a short time in my 50s. I liked being able to go live in a new town. Travel trailers have bathrooms, showers, and kitchens. Quit tip for bikes mounted to RV or Van. Use a cable lock as one of your tie-downs. It will make it more difficult for someone to take your bike. You might even be able to also use a U lock or 2. But the nice thing about a cable lock is it can take the place of other straps and do double duty of both securing the bike to the rack, but also making it harder to steal.

Good points. But... you don't have to boondock all the time. I bought into that hype the first year. I didn't like it. I spent less money this year staying in campgrounds and staying longer. I have never stayed in a Walmart. Don't want to. I stay in campgrounds and have made a lot of friends. And you forgot to mention when you have dogs you have to physically take them outside. They don't use cat boxes. I meet more women solo campers than I do couples and solo men. Women are pulling 5th wheels and trailers.

#5 This was my biggest worry getting into RV'ing. This is our second season, we go on long trips mostly. Occasionally a long weekend somewhere local. The black and grey tank are not a big deal if you follow some basic advice. I thought it was going to be way worse, and it really has been super easy. I could never do a cassette toilet. We use our RV toilet as a family of 5 and I just stay on top of keeping everything clean. Matt's RV tank treatment is awesome, having a black tank flush and a hose flush inlet on the drain. No issues. Make sure everything is connected well and you don't even smell anything. Ya'll should consider a black tank RV for your next rig.

So I overlander unfortunately has also not been very helpful because of that reason... I've watched so many of your videos and it was all so helpful! I cannot imagine using a public restroom room to drop a number 2. That’s just mean to do to some poor employee who draws the shortest stick. My interest in buying an RV with a full washroom is precisely so I have a completely private, quiet and hygienic option to do all my business.

Did 5 months on the road after I sold my house, went around the entire US looking for a new house to live in. Some days I wished I'd never sold my house. Solo, it was not always as fun or easy as they say. But we all have to stop at Wall Drugs "in that part of town."😁. Then Little America for $0.75 ice cream cones. I thought the tourist part was fun!

Maybe camp only in states that allow cross state carry travel. When alone, carry and camp in carry states. Otherwise the byrnas for non carry states.

I've never traveled in an rv but I thought If i'd be in a location I know nothing about, wouldn't it be a good idea to seek the advice of local law enforcement for a safe place to spend the night?

heh, i go out camping i never meet anybody, i am usually as far away from total strangers as possible. try to find a spot nobody will be even driving past let alone stopping or parking next to me... if in a camp ground i can choose my spot, the one farthest away from everyone else every single time. if i was driving around my actual home out there... i would be even farther away from total strangers if possible. i go out of my way not to talk to total strangers, if i waiting for them to finish at a spot,, dropping money in a box, looking at maps on the little wall at enterance, at dumpster, whatever. i will wait 25 feet away until they leave then go do what i need to do after they are gone. .. i wont be rude if they talk to me first.... but i generally do things in such a way they do not even get the chance to talk to me.... i probably would not even talk to the two of you if stumbled upon you camping somewhere, ya i know who you are.... but i dont actually know you, just drive by oh there is those you tube couple, nice.... well i need to park far away so i dont get on a video would be my first thought lol. and i am sure you would not want some total stranger deciding to park next to you JUST because they saw a video of yours either.

@@YeshuaKingMessiah nothing strange about trying to not to be surrounded by total strangers at all. what would be strange is purposely getting up in the middle of all them people for no reason at all. no more strange than wanting a house with plenty of room between you and the neighbor rather than wanting one where you can knock on their bedroom window from your bedroom window like most modern developments.. that is what is strange... may as well just be an apt. that 1 foot seperation is pointless. a house should stand alone, not right on top of the next one and the next. If I wanted to be surrounded by total strangers, I would just go to a bar or casino.

I have a caveat to your constructive recommendations. That is you're coming from the perspective of an occasional solo traveler which is a heavier lift than someone who does this routinely. For example, I'd compare it to running; the more you do it the easier it becomes. So things like planning, surveillance, and preparation becomes automatic (second nature). And solo travelers usually have their viewers/family/friends to bounce ideas off/assistance. However, I can say having a second hands to help with driving would very much be helpful 😃

I am really enjoying your videos! Very helpful information for sure. I just bought a 2006 Chrysler Grand Touring van. I had it checked out by a reliable mechanic and plan to get it on the road here in Texas to start out and then go fulltime next year. I have questions about how and where do you get fresh water. Will I need to carry a long water hose? I never see that talked about much on any of the videos I have been binging for the past few months. Keep up the great work! Thank you!
