Assuming it was John Anglin that wrote the letter (and I like to think it was), he should have included a small quantity of his hair in the letter as definitive proof that it wasn't a hoax.

Handwriting changes as you get older when eyes began to fail and finite motor skills start to slip. I would think the authorities would rather allow the old sick man to die without the comfort of modern medicine rather than ever admit these men escaped Alcatraz.

Lainey Wright that's an interesting take: probably right. The authorities were simply not going to allow the escapees to win the battle. They should have agreed and gone along with the request. The government always can renege. If the letter is legit, it should have contained fingerprints and palm print (why not?) Plus, if cancer stricken. ..medical care is the ONLY concern (may not even last a year)

There was a documentary 2 years ago with the Anglin family showing U.S. Marshals pictures of the Anglins in (1975) living in South America. The main picture had a 98% match by experts. No mention of Frank Morris though. But yeah, they did escape. Going to Seattle and Southern California afterwards...that probably did not happen. The documentary (Anglin family also) explain there escape worked by latching lines to a police boat leaving Alcatraz, then letting go when they got close to a boat that in the middle of the bay that was there to pick them up....the police were totally clueless what was going on.

spudwas I've watched ALL these "documentaries" and read everything on this. While we want to believe, it is a stretch to think that a former childhood chum just happened along (of all places Rio, an area of 6-7 million) and both brothers just were standing there together? And, then, the Brothers said, "Sure. Take all the photos you want." (no discussion with the remaining family members?) And, duly noted: the photographer sat on the photo for ? 17 years? Need the photo and negative.

The Bureau of Prisons had their official statement, "end of story" as the guy said...which is funny....since the bureau of prisons nor anyone else was there with the three men to know if they lived or died. It was the only answer that could be reported. And apparently no one believed it, which was a problem, and potentially a very expensive one, because it was closed the following year.

FBI and the authorities would never admit something that will make them lose face. Politically speaking, the guy who sits behind the desk would never agree to an inmate's terms, especially the elected leaders. Plus, it doesn't matter if he was really alive. He is old and sick and dying. Who cares if he really wrote the letter? Just ignores this guy and the world moves on. Only ordinary folks care if he lives. And he has probably passed away now.

If it's true, and this is really Old time Inmate John Anglin, One of the 3, men that escaped, why Not just Honer his Request?, I mean, if it is The real John Anglin, he would be up there in age, Mid 80,s, And he says he has Cancer, And he's Asking for Medical help, and he's Only asking, And he would agree to doing a Year in prison.????? Mid 80,s? Cancer ? At his age, What good would leaving him in Prison do ANYONE? True, he did Do Armed Robberies when he was a young man, witch is why he was sent to Alcatraz. But, I think, and this is Only My Opinion, if it is Former Escapee John Anglin, Why Not Clear the Mystery up, And be Done with it, Already. after this letter the fbi interviewed the anglin's nephews in georgia who said that they did make it. they had a photo of the brothers in brazil on a farm they owned in the mid 70s. they also had christmas cards the brothers had sent to their mother for several years after the escape. the fbi analyzed the photo and came to the conclusion that the men pictured could "very well be the anglin brothers". so yea, i believe that the men did make it to freedom.

Let's just say spots were probably picked a couple of times and traveling in pairs didn't make sense. Nevertheless the couple of very trusted people have passed many moons ago, along with the two of them.
