This audience had the same reaction to me when I first saw Harry Hill "what the hell is going on"? He gets funnier and funnier with repetition, often within the same show. After seeing him every Saturday on British tv, he was absolutely hysterical to watch, the highlight of the week. It takes a genius to make this funny: "mole.....mole.......mole.....mole.......goal."

The Letterman audience would be very forgiving, to be fair, and as far as I know American chat audiences are really encouraged by the producers to be jubilant. You can tell that the audience is a bit divided about him. Some are into it, and some are not. I'd be a lot more interested to hear how he went down in the actual comedy clubs, if he played any. Places like Caroline's in NYC. That would have been a more realistic barometer of US audiences' receptiveness. Even then, he'd already carved out a big niche in the UK by this point. He may just have not wanted to uproot his life to break America.

@@duckingforcover09 In a way, I would have liked to have seen those performances more than anything, because there's something quite exciting about a comedian who's great, but is completely wrong for the room. Even better, a comedian where no-one is laughing except for maybe five people who are absolutely howling. There is a school of thought that says a great comedian should be able to own any room they're in. I'm not sure I agree with that - it's very in the aggressive American comedian mindset of "Oh, I killed! I destroyed!". It locks out many odd or idiosyncratic styles of comedy that not everyone is going to get, almost by definition. Reeves and Mortimer did a set at Just For Laughs in Montreal in the 90s and the audience did not get it whatsoever. They died a death. However, Reeves and Mortimer are beloved by British audiences, but it's really not the kind of humour that translates.

@@brianm2881 I have a miniscule experience of this as someone who does standup at the moment as a hobby. I've see comedians do the same set in different rooms one where they did absolutely killed and the audiences loved them, the same where the audience simply didn't get it and didn't want to give the act any satisfaction. Sometimes there is no finite science to it, it could be how the audiences simply respond to their immediate presence and respond to it. Yes there are British acts and American acts etc who are probably more catered to their audiences both culturally and comedically but all in all there is a possibility to do well on any stage at any venue if you can gauge the audiences attention as soon as you possibly can.
