Elaine is beyond brilliant in this sketch, completely playing it straight, which makes it even funnier. This woman was such a force of nature.

Let's get one thing straight skippy: what a force of nature Elaine Stritch was :-) Owning the show the moment she stepped on stage, like she owns the place. Just brilliant.

Man, that is what is called "presence". Elaine Stritch speaking. That was impressive

Genius at work. Stritch's paw prints all over the writing too; who else could come up with drawing room comedy schtick? God, I miss her. The woman was an EVENT.

I love how they finally figured to hold the door for her. Making a lady go through a crash bar, I mean really. Loved her embellished pickups and waiting for the audience beats. She played it just right. Of course.

The total random chaos of this absurd clip is wonderful. More importantly, Elaine doesn't play this for comedy, she's deeply sincere. She plays this like a dramatic piece, which makes it far more hilarious.

This is classic, vintage Elaine: piss & vinegar spewing violently from every pore, offset by moments of softness & vulnerability, abruptly & jarringly searing a dose of fear in your soul...and all of it with a HUGE laugh! What a dame!

Just another example of Letterman’s genius. Instead of having her as a guest, they wrote an episode-long bit for Elaine Stritch and she delivered it in spades.

You wrote on this video a year ago that Elaine Stritch was Jack's Mom on 30 Rock. Are you aware that for decades, Elaine Stritch was a leading lady on "live" theater on Broadway here in New York City. Her work on 30 Rock was kind of a retirement after-thought after a distinguished career on Broadway.

Hahahaha!! Elaine!!! This is hilarious!!! How did this pop up so randomly 😂 My great aunt Jean reminded me of Elaine. Had hair like hers and was very loud and well … a drinker …. And I can hear her yelling at the tv when I’d be watching Letterman “Turn that off!!! I can’t stomach him!!! Look at that greasy hair! Blech!!!” 😂😂🤣 Still die of laughter thinking of it. She died 12 years ago. But I can still hear her yelling and laughing. She was something else. But everyone said she reminded them of Elaine Stritch

I think it was a little sad that as soon as she appeared, she did not get a rousing round of applause. I think a lot of people in the audience did not know who Elaine Stritch was, which is pretty pathetic. If you never saw her in Woody Allen's "September," she stole that film!

Talk show audiences are usually prompted to clap etc., by flashing signs just in case theyre not familiar with guests. Clearly, Daves team didnt do their job, but Elaine was on point as usual. Saw some of her hilarious performances on YT from Tales of the Unexpected by Roald Dahl. Now YTs algorithm churns up more, much to my delight!
